Nipsey Russell GSN Tribute
« on: October 04, 2005, 04:54:39 PM »
Cory posted it to our site and I didn't even notice.  GSN will be doing a weeklong tribute to the late Nipsey Russell by airing episodes of Match Game containing him starting on October 10th at 3:30PM ET/PT.  Maybe it's just me, and I hate to complain about GSN since they've been doing very well recently, but this seems a bit of an undertribute to one of the most prolific figures in game shows.  I don't see why they couldn't have pulled out some of his other game show apperances on one day next week as well.

What? Most people croak, they get an evening of B&W Overnight. This guy is getting a week of Match Game when other people might actually be watching, and you're complaining that it isn't ENOUGH? What do you want, Nipsey Russell MONTH?

Come ON.

Eh.
Considering that he really wasn't known for his work on "Match Game"...it's a little dissapointing.

Not that I expected more.

I'm with Alex here.   With all the appearances he's made, they could've devoted half a day to him.  They wouldn't even have to alter their dayime lineup much, as Nipsey has appeared on most of the shows.

But, I guess I should be glad they're at least doing something.

My Gawd. To listen to the folks here, nothing short of the establishment of the Nipsey Russell Game Show Appearance Network would be enough of a tribute. Get OVER it, folks.

You don't get to have it both ways; you can't be disappointed and unsurprised.  What would YOU have done?  The man gets his due.  What exactly WAS he known for, anyway, since you know and I don't?  Match Game works both ways, a known well-watched show for the Network, and a fine showcase of the man they wish to honor.  Everyone wins.

Seems to me he was better known for his great play on word communication games, such as "Pyramid" and "Super Password".

I'm siding with Lemon on this one...I must be catching a cold...

Okay, seriously...Nipsey wasn't really as well known as the last person who got a solid tribute on GSN, some guy who hosted some show at 11:30ish on your local NBC station for many years named Johnny Carson.  And, besides...inevitably Nipsey will be shown on the other daytime game shows sooner than later, so it's not like you're missing a lot.  I think what they're doing is better than nothing.

Well the 100k Pyramid runs cycles through about 500 times a year, so we'll see that again soon anyway if you still watch the show for the 1 millionth rerun.    GSN can't air any of the other Pyramids that he might have been on.

As for pulling other shows out, I seriously doubt that GSN still has rights to LMAD, contrary to what everyone says.   And they've never pulled a color gameshow out of the vault to give someone a marathon have they?   So that puts Tattletales and TTTT out of the question. (was he on TTTT 90??)

So basically you can see why they're only doing a MG marathon.  I'm not saying it's enough, but it makes a lot of sense.

I'm not complaining, but I must admit, I am a bit surprised. For some reason, I was thinking they'd show an episode of "Juvenile Jury", but then I realize, would the core GSN audience really wanna see an early-80s kids game show? I'd watch it out of curiosity, but I'm prolly the only one who'd watch.

GSN is going with what would get ratings. Even if they had "Your Number's Up" in their library, they prolly wouldn't air it, not out of disrespect, but because of ratings. Match Game gets ratings. The "Feud" special he did would prolly get ratings. "Jury" prolly wouldn't.
"I just wanna give a shoutout to my homies in their late-30s who are watching this on Paramount+ right now, cause they couldn't stay up late enough to watch it live!"

Now celebrating his 21st season on GSF!

Oddly enough, no (taking a quick check through Marshall Akers' site).  His TTTT appearances were all before then.

Doug -- and the countdown to 1500 continues (although not for very much longer)

To add some more Nipsey's appearances, he appeared on The Dating Game in either 1967 or 1968, and no he was not part of the trio of bachelors but he chooses a date while doing his poem saying of the day, so you'll most likely get to see that episode and GSN can show Nipsey's appearance of The $25,000 Pyramid as well.

I'll chime in with the chorus that one week of one show doesn't seem like enough. I suspect that, for a lot of people, Nipsey was better known for his game show appearances than anything else.

Throw in a week of Super Password and/or Pyramid (I'd actually go with a week of CBS $25,000 episodes to get rid of the out-of-sequence tournament mentions, if one exists), and it's at least fitting.

If I had my druthers, I'd like to see a 70's TTTT with Nipsey and the "Jackpot!" pilot he hosted.  I don't recall Nipsey getting more face time on MG than the other panelists; was there time to even do a poem on that show?
Let's Make a Deal was the first show to air on Buzzr. 6/1/15 8PM.
