DWTS Coming Back to GSN?
« on: May 18, 2012, 12:38:23 PM »
Every week the TV section of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has a Q&A section where readers submit questions and the (sometimes abnormally cocky) editor for the media/TV portion answers.  Check it out here

Quote
Q: It appears the Game Show Network has pulled its rebroadcasting of previous seasons of “Dancing with the Stars” after airing just two seasons. Would the contestants have had a say in allowing this to air in the first place? Do you have any insight?
- Nancy, 59, Baldwin Boro
Rob: GSN is not airing “DWTS” now but plans to air reruns again in the future. As for the stars, they have no say. When actors agree to be on a TV show, they sign away rights for reruns to be shown at a later date. Actors on scripted shows usually get some compensation for these reruns but I’m not sure about “reality” show stars.

I call Shenanigans on at least part of "Rob's" reply... haven't there been known cases where GSN has had to skip an episode (or sometimes a full week of shows!) of Match Game '7x/PM when such-and-such celebrity refused to give clearances for their episodes to air?

Yes. Ian Wallis, back when GSN was first established, got a message from David Schwartz, stating that celebrities, who were on game shows after 1973, must have their appearances cleared in order for them to air on that channel. Here's a list of all the stars who have said no to reruns on GSN:

Adam Arkin (Match Game '77, Match Game PM)
Anitra Ford (Match Game '76)
Betty Thomas (Password Plus, Body Language)
Fern Fitzgerald (Body Language)
James B. Sikking (Password)
Jay Leno (Tattletales)
Steve Kanaly (Match Game syndie -- though his two PM episodes did air at least once apiece on GSN, as did his week of All-Star Beat The Clock)
Valerie Bertinelli (Match Game '78, Match Game PM -- though three of her $20,000 Pyramid episodes did air on GSN)
David Leisure (Super Password)

Already I question this premise, David Schwartz or no David Schwartz...

...and this list is nowhere close to complete, based on other omissions we have seen, so you might not want to use the word "all" next time you repeat utter hearsay as fact.

I can prove Ian Wallis said that:

Well gee, Inspector Clouseau, that was some genius detective work. Totally using a letter written last century sure is evidence enough.

Don't ever change.

Cue him playing the victim role in 3, 2, 1...
"I just wanna give a shoutout to my homies in their late-30s who are watching this on Paramount+ right now, cause they couldn't stay up late enough to watch it live!"

Now celebrating his 21st season on GSF!

DWTS is a game show?
Of all of the worthless information in that post, this was about the least worthy of nitpicking. It's a show being aired on GSN, therefore they seem to think (and I emphasize *seem to think*) they need to clear appearances. Whether you or anyone else thinks it fits the definition of a "game show" is utterly immaterial.

I would think in an era when everything and everything is rerun into the ground, having rerun clauses in any contract has become a standard.
Portions of this post not affecting the outcome have been edited or recreated.

That's exactly where I am.  Since game show reruns were an almost unheard-of concept in the 70s and even 80s, there were probably no provisions for them in the standard contracts the artists signed back then.  I doubt very seriously that DWTS or any modern show has this problem.
This has been another installment of Matt Ottinger's Masters of the Obvious.
Stay tuned for all the obsessive-compulsive fun of Words Have Meanings.

Because having righteous indignation is so much better.
