If I was that first champion couple, I would complain - there is no "MGM" hotel/casino in Las Vegas.

Yes, there's the MGM Grand, but if you're not going to accept "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", you would think they would need to be a little more specific with the names of hotels.

(I am not saying that they would be penalized for saying "Mirage" for what is technically called "The Mirage".)

And how is Marvin the Martian a "star" while Yosemite Sam - and, for that matter, Foghorn Leghorn - are not?

I have to agree with this. If I lost a question on that, I'd speak to the producer.

Supposedly, and as I understood from it, the question as written was based upon was posted on the official Warner Bros. website of those cartoon stars of having each their own "official biography" as stars. Now, if only that show's research staff (and even Warners) had done some real background work on this topic, they should have looked at least into The Unofficial Looney Tunes & Merrie Melodies Page (highly recommended) as an other source.

Still, that's a pretty lousy way to construct a question. When they asked for Adam Sandler movies, they didn't ask for Adam Sandler movies that made at least $50 million (in which case Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore, among others, would have been wrong answers).

You always need a source to "pin" your question, and no doubt they did so in this case, though I'm having an awful hard time finding the "official" Warner Bros biographies you speak of. Still, a source that says Marvin the Martian is a major Warner Bros character and Yosemite Sam and Foghorn Leghorn are not just defies any kind of logical thinking. Marvin appeared in exactly five of the original cartoons, compared to dozens of appearances by the other two.

It smacks of arbitrariness, which is the same problem a lot of us had with the higher-value questions on Greed. ("According to a survey you've never heard of, which of these celebrities smell the best?") The difference comes down to whether The Money List is going to be a guessing game or a test of knowledge. If it's going to be the former, it's going to be a lot less interesting to me.

Wait, hold on.

So this question (list topic, pending unfinished business, whatever the hell you want to call it), qualified the source of its answer PRECISELY and DEFINITIVELY, and people are crying about it being unfair and that the contestants were screwed? Is that the case? (Can someone confirm what Padron is suggesting about the question having been sourced? You'll forgive me if I don't take it as gospel on his say-so.)

Because *if that is the case*, sorry, no. Because at that point the question is no longer "how many WB characters can you name" and all about guessing whether the one you're thinking of is "major" enough to have made the list.

You know why it's an unofficial page? Because it's not the OFFICIAL one. I suppose you want 'em using Wikipedia, too?

You want to knock WB for not deeming Sam and Foghorn important enough for top billing (and I see that you have, parenthetically), fine, and I wholly agree with you there. If you want to knock the writers for not saying "hey, this is kinda a lame source, it's clearly missing some obvious reasonable answers, maybe we shouldn't use this question unless we can use a better, more complete official source", I'd even get behind that. But if the question was indeed sourced when asked as Padron suggested it was, it was fair. Maybe not GOOD, but fair.

But you do NOT turn a fanboy page into an official resource.

Yeah, I think this is what I was getting at above. It's an okay question for Family Feud or Hot Potato. It's a crappy one for The Money List.

I have to believe it was sourced, though I didn't see the show and Mr. Padron's statement is worded confusingly enough that I still don't know what that source was. And frankly, even if their source WAS Wikipedia, or some unofficial book, as long as they say that's what the source was, then it's technically legitimate.

But again, even presuming it comes from an official Warner Brothers site, without a compelling reason why Marvin is a bigger "star" than the rest other than "because we say so", it's a lousy question.

For the record, they also left off Speedy Gonzales, Penelope Pussycat (the near-constant object of Pepe LePew's affections) and the admittely less-significant (unless you're a network mascot fan) Michigan J Frog. After that, you're looking at the sheepdog and wolf combo, and then you're really down to the minor characters.

Sure, because the question turns from "how many of these characters can you name" to "hey, have you seen this site?"

(And even more technically, a Wiki citation would have to mention the date the information was lifted from the page, since I could go in there right now and add Woody Woodpecker, Tom & Jerry, and Scooby-Doo to whatever list is currently there. "According to Wiki" doesn't float because the information there can change hourly and is often edited by some rather...special..."researchers".)

In the question, they definitely mentioned the term that WB or whomever uses to describe the kind of characters they were looking for, but I can't remember it offhand.

Guide_Angel from the GSN forums refreshed my memory - the term the program used was "Looney Stars" . The link Marc412 provided both corresponds with the show's list and terminology.

Meanwhile, Google "Looney Stars" and click on the very first link. There, the images you will find are those of...Speedy Gonzales and Yosemite Sam!
