Concentration Pilot
« on: December 12, 2005, 02:13:10 PM »
A couple of years ago, I heard that a pilot for a new Concentration was made in the late 90's by NBC. Can anybody confirm this, and if so, does anybody have any info on it? Who hosted it, what was the gameplay like, what cash/prizes were given away, was it considered for a primetime or daytime spot on the network...

As per an August 2002 post in ATGS, Classic Concentration apparently was pitched for syndication for Fall 2002, but there was not enough interest.

  • Just leave the set; that’d be terrific.

Which has nothing to do with the late 90s.  Furthermore, I thought that NBC had only mulled over pitching it, and didn't do so.  Link me?

I remember that page from when this was discussed - all I recall was a list documenting failed syndication prospects (with "The John Henson Show" among them) with a listing reading "Concentration (NBC)."

From what I remember, Millionaire's breakout success and 21's modest success caused NBC to briefly consider the possibility of reviving some shows for daytime, and one of the names that came up was Concentration.

ATGS post, March 2000. It links to a Variety article, but I don't know if the article is still readable.

I think you know what came out of that. :-P

Ahhhh, that 2002 idea must have been the one I heard about. Did it make it anywhere past the pitching stages and production hell to a pilot, or no?

I liked Curt's ideas for a revamped NBC daytime schedule, now in last place for 30 straight years!  IMO, a two hours of word games with a daytime Wheel, Concentration, Scrabble, and Super Password could do a lot more for NBC then what Passions or DooL could do in the foreseeable future, NBC's got nothing to lose at this point. What's also sad is the fact that even 5 years ago, people were talking about how Passions was in trouble, and 5 years later, its still here and still in trouble!!

and still making a profit for NBC.

You won't see them replace soaps on NBC with your dream sched, kid. It's FAR too costly to take a chance on 4 game shows that haven't seen the light of day in 10 years, than 2 shows that make a lot of money now.

People , listen up. Ratings don't matter any more. Dollars do.  A third place show that is economically profitable wins every time.

I thought I read here that NBC is now tops in daytime.  Anyway, soaps deliver the kind of audience advertisers want (young women) better than games.

perhaps in a demographic that NBC wants to spin...they're good at doing that....

but overall, CBS has been dominant for years....

Y&R has been the #1 show in daytime for how long? I'm thinking like 400+ weeks...

Per CBS.com,  Y&R has been the top rated daytime drama for 880 weeks ending Nov. 13.

But there have been a few times in recent years where Price has beaten Y&R.
Enjoy lots and lots of backstage TPIR photos and other fun stuff here. And yes, I did park in Syd Vinnedge's parking spot at CBS

Man, was I on the soapbox that day.

Obviously NBC has no intention of adding programming to daytime at this point.  And, yes, I believe they're still last in daytime; Entertainment Weekly recently ran a ratings box which muddled the point by adding demographics, which incorrectly inferred their soaps were doing quite well.  Mediaweek[/i] points out that's hardly the case.
