With Christmas over, it's time now to bring up what were the biggest game/reality stories of 2005 as the year winds down. And yeah, there were some, including...

Brad Rutter eclipising fellow Jeopardy contestant Ken Jennings as the all-time winnings champ in the Ultimate Tournament of Champions
Sheena Lindholm's record haul of $183,688 on a TPIR Million Dollar Spectacular...which followed an ALL-TIME world record $664,667 Mega Showcase win on the Aussie version (give or take $510,000 or so U.S.)!
Rob and Amber running "The Amazing Race", but in the end came in second to Uchenna and Joyce Agu
Deal or No Deal reviving hopes for fourth-place NBC

What else fits there?

GOOD:
Jeopardy becomes "The Adventures of David Madden"
GSN bringing back the classics, including TWO Bill Rafferty-hosted shows
The Family Feud "Firefighters' Challenge 2005"
Howie Mandel shows his game show hosting prowess very well presiding over Deal or No Deal
Publication of "The Ultimate TV Game Show Book"
Meredith Viera wins a Daytime Emmy

BAD:
The losses of Ralph Edwards, Nipsey Russell, and Randy Merriman, among others.

UGLY:
GSN banning B&W game shows sponsored by cigarettes.

I don't have a problem with this AT ALL, but then I'm also a vociferous supporter of Washington's smoking ban.

While I know there are people on the board who have lost loved ones due to the after-effects of smoking, I must say it was a dissapointing decision...those programs are part of TV history, and for them not to be shown because there's a banner that says "Winston" on set?

Might as well disallow the Virginia Slims golf tournament, pro rodeo, and old NASCAR races from TV as well.

We always mention the "cigarette ban" but how did I end up with so many tapes of IGAS with the dreaded Winstons? I say this because the time I recorded these was parallel with many saying GSN "banned" those shows.

Oddly enough, I don't have a problem with any of these either, but it's mostly because there's already too much golf on TV already, and rodeo and NASCAR are for inbred rednecks.

The technology to omit offending sponsors on set was there back in 1961 when Best of Groucho hit syndication. If anything, it's less complicated to do it now. It's probably not worth the effort for GSN.
