I can't remember if I've already asked this group this question or not, but I'll give it a shot. Does anyone out there have any memory of Paul Lynde's week on \"The $10,000 Pyramid\" in January of 1975? Specifically, does anyone know who his celebrity opponent was for the week? TV Guide lists Marcia Wallace, but there is substantial evidence to dispute that.

I certainly wouldn't doubt a TV Guide listing in 1975 - after all, it was tons more reliable back then, than the current abomination that's out there now (to become even worse come September

What happens on September 8?

ObGameShow: TV Guide used to at least show the celebrity guests on game shows, till about 2 yrs. ago.

They stopped showing some of the celeb guests on game shows by the early 90s(don't recall seeing them in the Philly edition for Davidson Pyramid or TTTT90 for example). SOme editions occasionally will show the Squares celeb list, but forget seeing any listings for Pyramid.

I've always said that everybody ought to be an expert about something, and Brendan is an expert at compiling accurate lists of celebrity game show appearances. Naturally, TVG is the best first place to go, but trust me when I say that if Brendan has reason to doubt a particular listing, he really, really does.

TV Guide will be redesigned and will feature a new format which will de-emphasize the daily listings of programs. The overall effect is to have it look more like a series of grids with program info on side boxes. It'll look a lot more like what the daily paper looks like with its TV grid and less like the TV Guide that has been published for over 50 years now.

First off, thanks to Matt for the vote of confidence. Second of all, here are the reasons why I doubt the listing:

1. Marcia was not listed in the 1987 list of celebs that \"Pyramid\" showed for their 15th anniversary. Granted, though, many other stars were conspicuously absent from that list.

2. Marcia also was not on a list of celebs who had been on \"Pyramid\" that appeared in a 1976 Variety ad celebrating the show's Emmy win.

3. On her 1987 appearance on the 25K, Marcia herself said that she had never done the game before, calling herself a \"Pyramid virgin.\"

I'd really like to believe the TV Guide listings, but I've found a good number of them to be inaccurate, including a handful from 1975. Luckily, I have some fellow \"Pyramid\" fans helping me to keep the list as accurate as possible.

I apologize for going off-topic, but TV Guide has really become an exercise in irritability. I remember back in the day, they would trumpet the premiere of any game show arrival...no matter how insignificant (I have a January 1983 issue in which 2 FULL PAGES were used to announce a revamped NBC daytime schedule -- with $otC, Hit Man, and Just Men). They would even give up space to advertise game shows and syndie reruns of Network classics long after the premiere date. Those were the days.

Now, it is an atrocity, at best. Never mind the fact that most of today's TV Guide covers are lined up with people who prove that Darwin's Theory of Evolution is a failure (the cast of Friends, Trista, Kelly, Jeff Probst, the cast of version 8,000.0 of Survivor...the list goes on and is slowly growing). That includes pushing Bob Hope aside for Paige Davis; that could have waited. However, I digress...

They won't even give a game show premiere the time of day. No ads for Pyramid, Card Sharks '01 (which was not really a loss), or even Richard Karn hosting the Family Feud. Except for the 30th Anniversary Special of The Price is Right, hardly any mention was made of the 12 primetime specials that came thereafter. If I had not tuned to CBS at the time that they aired the promo, I would have missed half of the MDS's. Instead, we are entreated to American Idol garbage and thong pics to promote the (gag!) return of Temptation Island.

Again, I am sorry...I had to vent.

First, let me point out ads only appear when someone BUYS them, not when the publication chooses to run them. That aside, I'm rather disappointed to hear this latest news about TV Guide. However, I'm thankful I live in the Great White North, where the Canadian edition of TV Guide is a completely separate beast, and (I assume) will continue with the format that everyone has come to expect.

Now I'll add my rant to this thread...
I have digital cable, I've had it for several years, I've seen the Cablevision/TCI, TCI/ATT and the ATT/Comcast mergers on my digital cable screen. I've had enough of the digital guide they provide, at first you could go out a full two months on all 400+ channels, then it got down to three weeks, then down to a little under a week, now I'm lucky if I get listings 12 hours out. The big part of the down hill came after TV Guide took over, and they added ads on every page, it used to be you could fit a whole description of a show on one screen and make the text readable now the left hand third of the screen is filled with TV Guide Ads, a magazine this household has subscribed to for the last 10 years (and our current subscription goes through 2007 due to school fundraisers). If TV Guide cant deliver accurate listings to people (and be able to correct them on their website/interactive guide as needed) then they should step aside and sell the name and their assets.

First off, I believe an apology is in order to Brendan....While I saw the name \"Brendan\", for some odd reason or another I did not put 2 and 2 together and associate it with \"*that* Brendan\", who I know is a chief compiler of celebs and when they appeared on our favorite game shows - I am in full 100% agreement with Mr. Ottinger on your expertise.

My apologies, however, will NOT be extended to TV Guide, nor will my sympathies. As the person who was subscribing to an edition that was a \"test market\" for the new TVG (at least in layout), be forewarned of what I think is the most cardinal sin in their new format - the weekday daytime listings have been shelved in favor of \"Weekday daytime grids\" (for all 5 weekdays at the same time, 5am-5pm, broken up into several pages of grids), and some listings for some channels merely say \"Various Programs\".

Thanks to Aaron, I have seen the prototype TVG. What I find strange is the daytime grids have no VCR Plus codes, which I always thought was a priority for Gemstar. I think this will be a temporary change for TVG and it will quickly go back to the old way after a little public uproar. I kinda like the movie pages though, reminds me of the \"Peach Section\" of the Toledo Blade. Back on topic, did Paul Lynde only make one appearance on Pyramid?

Aw, you guys make me blush.

Thanks for your support and kind words, Aaron, but absolutely no apology is necessary. While I do my best to be accurate with these listings all of the time, I certainly have made my share of goofs. That's why I enlist the help of the great minds on this board to keep things on the up-and-up.

From my experience, the TV Guide listings have been valuable as a starting point, and then I try to double-check those listings. As soon as I run into one inconsistency in any TVG game show listing, then I have to doubt the whole list that I've compiled.

TVG appears to be above 90% accurate, though. Still, as far as daytime games are concerned, the only \"major\" game that I've found absolutely no mistakes in was \"Super Password.\" Shorter-lived shows like \"Blackout\" have also been 100% accurate in TVG. Listings for syndicated games appear to be much more accurate. I have yet to find a mistake in the TVG listings for the Cullen 25K 'Mid.

These celeb lists are a labor of love for me, and it's gratifying when fellow game fans who I respect enjoy my work. (Cue \"That's What Friends Are For\")

To answer Jimmy's question, the January 1975 listing is the only one I have for Paul Lynde. I know from anecdotes that he won at least once (receiving the clues).
