That brief experiment w/3 questions in the maingame rounds (and 2 for tiebreakers) has ended, and they're back to the standard 4-4-3 format. Also, players now retire upon winning the car.

The players retiring upon winning the car rule will be quite short-lived. As of today's airing, the cars were downgraded to $15K(in 1986 dollars) sports cars like Camaro IROCs, and all time Card Sharks winner Brian Hunt won a second one of them and was not forced to retire.

1) It was $16,000. I just had to nitpick the King of Nitpicks.

2) You say downgrade like it's a Geo Metro* or something. $16,000 is good for a car in 2005, let alone 19 yrs. ago. Yeah, I know that they offered Corvettes and Cadillac's, but I still wouldn't consider a Camaro a "downgrade," considering how it was still one of Chevrolet's higher-end cars.

*I know that the Metro wasn't offered till the late-80s. I'm just using it as an example.

Besides the Ion, Kias and Hyundais', Sunfire, Cavailier, Aveo, Neon, and Civic what other cars can you get for around $16,000. None of the aforementioned models are exactly Park Avenue.

Besides the Ion, Kias and Hyundais' Sunfire, Cavailier, Aveo, Neon, and Civic what other cars can you get for around $16,000. None of the aforementioned models are exactly Park Avenue.

You forgot Corolla (I had to blatantly plug my car ;-) ), but I see what you're saying. I didn't realize so many compact cars were in the mid-teens. Still, none of those are el-cheapos. AFAIK, they all get good consumer ratings, esp. that Corolla. ;-)

The only time a contestant ever retired upon winning a car is if it put them over the show's winnings limit (not sure what it is at this point.)

No. The lady who won the car at the top of Monday's episode was retired after winning a car, amassing just over $35,000 in winnings. I'm pretty sure at least one person in the pre-car game era of Rafferty CS had winnings above $35,000, but wasn't forced to retire.

Anyhow, IIRC, the limit on both the daytime and nighttime versions of CS was $75,000.

It was $50K from Jan-Sep 1986. A contestant retired after passing the $50K mark in the first month of the daytime run. Brian Hunt was retired on the syndicated version at $63,105 because, as they said to him at the time(airdate November 1986) and he reported in ATGS a few years back, winning one more car would take him over the CBS winnings limit of $75K.

I take it that was because the syndicated version must have aired on WCAU or another CBS O&O? I know it was on WABC in NY and KNBC in LA, so it would have had to conform to those network's limits as well.

Over $10K away from the limit and they bounce him? One good Money Cards and he'd have been over the limit, too. Couldn't they just reduce his total to $75000 from whatever it would end up being if he got that far? It seems rather rad to kick him to the curb just because he MIGHT get to the limit. A player with $45000 might bust the limit, too, under that grand plan. Would they have stopped him or her there as well?
If a contestant was within $1000 or so of the plateau I could see them retiring the player. That did happen at least once on the CBS Joker's Wild. The blonde lass who wore the cowboy hat was within a few hundred of the $25000 "legal limit" so Jack Barry just spotted her the extra bills and bade her goodbye.

Brian Hunt was up to $58,005 before he played in his final match(including two cars), and they didn't boot him at that point.
