While I admire Henry Mancini's work very much, that was not a game show theme. That music would've played better on Romper Room.

Some things I remember about those two flopped '90s revivals:

I always thought Edd Hall announced on TJW '90 before he went to The Tonight Show in 1992 to serve 12 years there (he left last spring and John Melendez -- formerly "Stuttering John" of Howard Stern's show -- is the current announcer). But the voices didn't match together.

The CBS station in Mobile, Ala. (WKRG) ran the shows back-to-back in I think the 3:00 hour in 1990; this was during the time I resided in the Mississippi coast where the New Orleans/Mobile stations are seen on cable and now satellite. They weren't seen here in Fairbanks (we still had two commercial stations at the time -- Channels 2 and 11 -- until 1992 when Fox 7 signed on), though we would get our chance very later when USA reran them.

And oh yeah...What about the rapping dragon?!?!?!

(BTW, Patrick Wayne was in Saturday's Rose Parade riding horses along with family members of other country-western celebs, including the daughter of June Lockhart...who, along with Wayne, appeared on Celebrity Bullseye!)

Per TEOTVGS, the announcer of TJW90 was Ed MacKay.

IIRC, I think Edd Hall was still on staff with David Letterman when TJW90 premiered (and left Dave for Jay)--Hall was Letterman's graphic coordinator (I'm pretty sure he also worked on SNL in a similar capacity).

Well as far as TTD, the front game WAS more or less the same, with the exception of manual stopping of the shuffle and the reset pot after tie games. The bonus game was essentially the CBS bonus (except you possibly could NOT win with three in a row, and the inclusion of the Dragon Slayer).

I think TTD90 gets its bad reputation from the cheesy host, theme, etc. It's not like they FUBARed the game play...i.e. you didn't just play tic-tac-toe without questions, and could only block by using a "Tic Chip" and solving the outcome of a WACKY dilemma. In other words, while it was bad, it wasn't -INO bad like the bastardization I was not-so-vaguely referencing.

I prefer the "Money on the Wheels" format over the Categories format. With the former format, you could keep answering questions until you missed.

With the categories format (a la the classic TJW), you couldn't keep answering questions until you missed (or could you?).

As for the Bonus Round, I liked it, because it was using the Vegas-like format (3-in-a-row wins you the prize, no 3-in-a-row, doesn't cost you anything).

No, I thought so as well. It was in a webpage called Mandel's Guide to Game Shows. He wrote a review of his favorite (& not so favorite) games. Here's what Mandel said about TTD90's tune,

"Throw in a really awful theme 'kiddie-like' song that surprisingly was composed by Henry Mancini. I mean, it was as if the Electric Lights Parade was marching into the studio with Barney the Dinosaur as the Grand Marshall!"

Yes, you could. Both formats were "fast forward style", except that no winnings were forfeited to continue. A big annoyance is that the other players' buzzers weren't turned off while the player in the spotlight was being asked questions of the genial emcee so he had to continually tell the player who would errantly ring in, "Not yet" or "It's still his turn". To his credit, Pat was very polite when that would happen (often) while I'm sure it was tempting to grab a heavy object and crack it across the dumbskull's head for their impatience.

Was Jacksonville, FL the only market that aired the 1990 TTD and TJW in a different timeslot from the overnight? Well, then again, when TJW returned, WJKS advertised it as "The game show you voted number 1 for three years in a row!"

Snowball's chance in hell.

TJW 90: Too close to Bullseye's Bonus Island. It would have grown tiresome too quickly playing for the same prizes over and over again.

TTD 90: who wouldn't have the urge to smash their speakers after hearing "Easy come, easy go - if you pick the Dragon I'll take your dough!" for the umpteenth time? No way

We did just release an alternate version of "Beat The Dragon" that used the format from the short lived CBS run. It's simular to the 90 version, but there is no dragon slayer and the tic tac dough was either X's or O's.

WHere were TJW90 and TTD90 NOT on in late night? WPXI Pittsburgh aired a class of 1990 late night game show block, as some here might remember: Quiz Kids Challenge, Trump Card, TJW, and TTD. I think the Challengers aired for part of the season at Noon on WTAE.

WTVQ in Lexington, KY aired TJW '90 at 4:30pm and The Challengers at 5:30, sandwiched between their newscasts. But since TVQ has been Lexington's lowest rated newscasts for about 20 years, they didn't last too long. Thankfully, we were spared the agony of TTD '90.

Ch. 2 Buffalo aired them at 11 a.m. and 11:30 respectively.
