Game Shows With FOUR Competing Contestants?
« on: May 13, 2026, 08:45:47 PM »
When recently watching a few Musical Chairs eps and seeing a photo of Liar's Club when it briefly had 4 contestants, not many shows had four individual civilian players pitted against each other -- not counting two 2-person teams (Play The %s) or single 4-person teams (Dawson's last Family Feud series).  I want to say there have been others, but none are coming to mind.

So besides Musical Chairs and the brief time The Liar's Club used 4 individual players, were there any others?

I've seen some special-ish eps. of Aussie SOTC (either celebs or tourneys---not remembering which) that have had 4 players---not sure if that will count as a valid answer.

not counting two 2-person teams (Play The %s) or single 4-person teams (Dawson's last Family Feud series).

The entire Nickelodeon "Double Dare" franchise fits both of those categories. 😉

Price is Right, originally as described, currently as a qualifying round?

Password post-All Stars?

And I would also assume you leave off shows like Face the Music and Hit Man, because the fourth doesn’t come into play until later?
I suppose you can still learn stuff on TLC, though it would be more in the Goofus & Gallant sense, that is (don't do what these parents did)"- Travis Eberle, 2012

Inquizition here, but you could go global and include Bob's Full House in the UK, Hard Quiz in Australia, and for a short time, Aussie Sale of the Century.

Pass The Buck, and the British Now You See It (they competed as single players rather than teams).

It seems like four players competing is common enough to not merit the block caps in the thread title.

Another one that came to mind was The Krypton Factor.

Could The Newlywed Game with its four couples count as an exception to the No Teams clause?

Sure I would count Newlywed Game. Scrabble too. For the few weeks it was on ABC, Animal Crack-ups had four celebrities playing on behalf of charity.

Also in the UK, Mastermind features 4 contenders, and Pointless has four pairs.

It does seem like three-player cutthroat formats work a lot better than four-player cutthroat formats unless you're eliminating players throughout the game.

I can't articulate why this is the case (but having to cast 25% fewer contestants may also explain why four-player cutthroat formats are rare).

Idiot Savants certainly demonstrated that if just one person is markedly better at trivia then he or she will grab the toss up which means first licks at the remaining 500 points. Super Jeopardy--where the contestants were top drawer and the material not much harder than a regular game means lots of buzzer races, and that means three people are getting locked out of every first buzz.

Wheel of Fortune would feel interminable if the panel had four players instead of three, at least to the panel.
