"Hot Potato" logo inspiration?
« on: January 04, 2026, 01:09:34 AM »
The other night, I was reading this article about "The Crossroads of the World" that made me think about game shows a bit. From the 1940's to about the mid '60s, there was this billboard in Times Square for Camel Cigarettes that blew actual smoke onto the street (No word on if it was hazardous to your health).

Reading that fun fact made me go, "I wonder if that could've been the inspiration for how they did the sign on Hot Potato?

/Probably not, but seriously...I would love to know how they were able to get the steam to shoot out of the logo like that.

More likely something like dry ice than steam.

I presume you're asking about Hot Potato and not the Camel billboard. I would suspect the answer was a fog machine. They've been around for decades. Push the button and it shoots out a cloud of fog.

IIRC the Hot Potato smoke was created by lighting a combination of tobacco and tea leaves. From what I understand, the smoke left a lingering smell on set
