eBay Finds 2024
« on: March 02, 2024, 02:34:50 AM »
A few decks of Card Sharks cards used for door prizes were (according to the listing) discovered in storage at Television City, and an opportunist apparently pilfered them to make a few bucks on eBay.

I have 4 decks of these that Buzzr sent my son in 2020 because he's a big game show fan like me and wrote them.

I thought they were something they had made but they do look like they're from the 80s. The cellophane was yellowed and the Joker looked like the ones from those cheap decks you'd find in discount stores back in the day. They probably kept the overstock to give away.

We opened one deck not sure where the other 3 went....

Going slightly off topic, but I remember going to Disney World as a kid and coming home with this very same pack of jumbo playing cards as a souvenir.

Even then, I wondered if these were made by the same company who made the cards on Card Sharks. I take it the cards on the show were larger than 7 x 5, so probably not.

The Card Sharks cards were at least one foot long on the shorter edge.

I always assumed that the big cards were custom made by the same graphics department that made all of the other graphical elements (name tags, Wheel of Fortune wedges, etc.) for the network's game shows.

As seen in various G-T fee plugs, a beach towel from Hawaiian Tropic (supply of Hawaiian Tropic not included):

I was amazed to find quite a few photos from this seller (from Australia), but just copied/pasted two particular listings here, showing a couple of interesting observations:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/387313100387?_skw=dick+clark+1975&itmmeta=01JA8CK11TDVQAX8QQTW0CV9NV&hash=item5a2da8e663:g:PK8AAOSwZmlmxFSx&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKlTbEM37XkSdnEMgQkOhLgSIYJlR8Zjl7I%2FNK88aQIjzagQWyh%2FJZIUQZIfvA6Eyetf1MJtBDq%2BMxqqyLJTKmHmigpGqSw5i4RuPe3zcnLAd1TaCSlEDqnCjsQjebXTkZPWd2gmnQCXYCnHVVNqw5m3JCBMivrqCUHp5vJYctOr1k4iIa8FsXopJc7%2Fjycqyj0baeRT4yUPLUDBP%2FSxV%2F6%2Fc5YeSIMiLhyiAp1fCp33P9a75K8rvZJrrqJooi1pz3REzcFKAZ%2Bc9U0aqrRO%2BP%2B89rWuicHNzCNKeerERvRtAQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5KRzIzSZA

When you look at the next one, you will notice, only the main game desks and background props are now blue.

If you look closely, you'll see Dick Clark's podium showing "$10,000," and the front of his station is still in orange (the top and sides are blue).

There are more than just these two for sale, but just wanted to make note of these two.  You can look them up by seller.  BTW, the seller assumed that they were marking an anniversary.  Actually, it was Clark's birthday they were celebrating.

I decided to show each of these whole pages, in case anyone would like to bid/purchase them.

Also in that lot is a wide shot from the balcony, and the "10" on the left side revealing the contestant-facing scoreboard

Caveat emptor.

These are Getty Images images.  The seller has simply captured (which is to say "stolen") the low-resolution photos off their website.  They're better than thumbnails, but nowhere remotely approaching professional quality.  If you were to order from him, all you would get is a pretty grainy 8 1/2 x 11 physical copy of that small image.  Regardless of the legal ramifications of using Getty stuff without their permission, there's also the skeeziness of giving money to a blatant thief trying to profit in such a crassly obvious way off of someone else's material.  Not to mention that he's not really providing any service you couldn't simply do yourself.

Chiming in to say, as a burn victim, screw the seller from Australia. He's selling 8x10s, but he's downloading a small resolution version of the image from Getty (they have different price tiers for different resolutions) and printing them on 8x10. They're pixelated AF, and in fact, the link Bob posted shows he's actually getting careless about how he's posting his images on his Ebay listings. You see how crappy that photo looks when you enlarge it? There's nothing wrong with Ebay; THAT is what you'll be getting. It's going to look that bad. When I bought images from him, he had the listings set up so you couldn't enlarge the image. I figured I just got incredibly lucky with a foreign seller who ended up with a lot of pics from the CBS vault. I bought 15 photos and every one of them was blurry, pixelated garbage.

DO NOT BUY ANY PHOTOS FROM THIS SELLER.

I just saw the progression in set change, and thought it might be interesting.  I'm sorry, I won't do it anymore.

Oh, no, no, don't apologize. I never exactly started a thread to announce that I got ripped off by a seller, and given how many potential customers might have seen your link, it was a good chance to jump in and offer a warning from personal experience. I'm glad you shared the links.

Me too.  This also can serve as a bit of a learning experience in another way.  Getty has a TON of game show photos on their site.  Rather than bothering with this Australian dipshit, poke around there and you'll probably find a lot of interesting angles and set variations for a bunch of shows.

Seconded; I've found a huge number of photos on the site. But this comes with a caveat: Getty's search engine isn't the greatest, and the captions and dates that accompany the photo are, well, not necessarily accurate.

By a wide margin, the best game show photo caption on Getty.
