Wait, they got hard CASH?? You'd think they'd get a check.

Trust me when I tell you the cash was a prop.

If the contestants are fully apprised of the rules, then they knew how much was being added to the guarantee for each right answer.  In which case, what's with this horseshit they were throwing around that he thought he only got two correct?

I was operating under the assumption that he was informed (whether actually in print on the "contract" or by a staffer or whatever) that the buyout was precisely "your Round 1 pot plus whatever for every right answer, now do the math." and not a concrete figure.

They showed the Brinks truck right outside. I assume that as soon as the family got to see what that much money looked like in real life, it went right back in the truck and they received their winnings via check.

Chris Hardwick mentioned that the contestant in isolation was never told whether his answers were correct. He clearly guessed on a couple of the questions -- apparently, he was only 100% confident in two of his answers.

The underlying mathematical exercise is named for a guy who lived in the 17th century, and people were studying this concept centuries before him.  Believe me when I say there's a body of work that predates 1983.

I never knew they had Plinko in the 1600s!

That's part of the big problem - full hour.

Another fix could be playing two games in the hour, each for half as much. $6 million doesn't sound unimpressive.

Out of curiosity, what exactly is the theoretical top prize? Can you get close to/over this mythical $12M number?

It looks like you could come within ten bucks of $12,375,000 if every green ball plopped into the top dollar values, all of the red balls fell into $1 lanes and every question is answered correctly.

Yes.  Though it is, as you said, theoretical.  Max take in the last round would be $9,999,996.  Max take in the second round would be $1,999,998.  So, so just short of $12m in those two.  Add in the opening round, and you go over.

More importantly, do we have the balls?
