I read the article thanks to a Yahoo! link. Pretty damning article, even if you push the fact of taxes aside.

At least there were no claims of Human Rights Violations in that article.

My family passed this article along earlier in the week. I found it funny that their opening salvo about contestants needing personality quotes a contestant from "Jeopardy" and Crosswords, two shows that clearly put more weight on game-playing than many of their counterparts.

That's right, game shows are mean and scary and you'll never be a contestant and you can't ever win.

I either expected a call for more civil, scripted programing or an ad for gold.

The title of the article should be "10 things games shows won't tell you because they figure you are smart enough to know them already".

I was expecting to learn at least something from the article, but nope - not a thing.

#2 is also a little misleading.  When you "go into a higher tax bracket", you don't pay the higher rate on everything you make - just on the amount over the lower tax bracket's limit.

I had enough problems explaining this to too many of my co-workers when the 15/28 percent tax brackets were introduced in the 1980s.

Most of us on the forum are smart when it comes to game shows, because we're around so many others who already know this information: people in the biz, former contestants, even future contestants who've done their homework. So for most of us, the article isn't really anything we haven't heard before. The only thing that was news to me was the up-to-10-hour wait on Wheel. (Guess I should bring the DS.)

However, I get the feeling that this was written for more casual fans of the genre. Even someone with a modicum of common sense could probably figure out that game show winnings are taxed like any other sort of income, but I would bet that very few people outside the loop realize (for instance) just how rigorously contestants are screened, or what exactly The Powers That Be™ are looking for in a contestant. I know in the course of my auditioning for Wheel, I saw many people who clearly didn't know what they were in for, but I also saw many people who seemed like they were just right on top of it.

The whole "Remember, you have to pay *gasp* TAXES ON YOUR WINNINGS!" thing, in my opinion, has been done. To. Death.

I actually didn't know this. (That'll happen when you're trusted TurboTax / TaxAct to do the job for you for the last fifteen years.) Good to know.

Did I get owned by a hotlinking message? It seems to work fine for me.

Thanks for the fix, then. :)
