When Michael Davies was pitching a US version of Mastermind back in 2000, the original idea was that he would select contestants who had done well on J!, Ben Stein, or WWTBAM. After ABC passed on the idea, it was supposedly shopped to (and rejected by) GSN, A&E, and USA. Pity - I think there's an audience for a fast-paced straight-ahead quiz show with high-caliber players, but everyone these days thinks a show needs a gimmick to succeed.
