Fred Phelps is a Republican?  I don't recall the Republican party embracing or endorsing him.

/He's not a "Christian" either

Ol' Fred ran for the Republican nomination for governor in Kansas in, methinks, 1990. I had the assignment to interview him, when he was making a south border-to-north border walk to promote his run. He only had one foot off the deep end then.

Well there's Bubba from Arkansas:

McCance used the terms "queer" and "fag" repeatedly, promised to disown his own children if they are gay and stated that he enjoys "the fact that [gay people] give each other AIDS and die."
I saw Chuck Woolery being interviewed on Mike Huckabee's talk show. When asked about his conservative leanings, Chuck expressed reservations about his future employability but went on to talk about it. I thought to myself that Chuck is one of the finest emcees around and if that's what you hire him to do, who cares about his political bent? Same with Sajak.

And there's the famous instance of David Duke running as a Republican back in the 80s, I think.  He was and still is denounced by Republicans and the vast majority of Americans that still remember the douchebag.  I suppose one could use the same logic and smear Democrats because Robert Byrd was a former Grand Kleagle in the KKK (and used the N-word a number of times on national tv).  Does that make Democrats racist?

Maybe we just put the political references on hold for another 2 years or so?

1991 actually, in the Louisiana gubernatorial election. George H.W. Bush publicly endorsed Edwin Edwards (a Democrat) & there were bumper stickers that said, "Vote for the crook. It matters," and "Better a lizard than a wizard."

Modor: I couldn't quote two posts. Your point that gays can be conservative (at least fiscally) is certainly valid. Still, it's not even debatable that Democrats have been more progressive on gay rights than Republicans. I used to say that Democrats want gays to be able to do anything they want, except hold onto their money.

I was going to start my sentence, "Since Merv was gay," but I wanted confirmation first. The closest I could find was IMDb saying that "it's generally known." I've been burned before depending on IMDb.
