I think the reason America hasn't been exporting many game shows is because of Millionaire's success. Since Regis and The Stack hit U.S. airwaves nearly ten years ago, it seems like network programmers are waiting for lightning to strike a 312th time. They'll let a show become a runaway hit offshore then buy the rights to air a local version, thinking that it'll be more likely to do well than one of their own ideas. It's like fast food stores. Game show franchising. It's (IMO) principally because networks are so afraid to have a new show not be an immediate smash hit. They apparently can't afford let a show grow its audience over a couple months.

Meanwhile we give you Millionaire, Survivor, Po... sorry, American Idol, Strictly Come Dancing With The Stars... the list is LITERALLY endless. Cat Deeley. Ant and Dec. Nigel Lythgoe. Simon Cowell. And so on.

Isn't Survivor Swedish (Expedition Robinson)?

British idea, although amusingly we were just about the last country to get our own version.

We'll take back American Idol and Strictly Come Dancing if you keep Piers Morgan. Deal?

And actually CarShark you make quite an interesting point, and you can see it in the way imported formats are advertised over there, making big points about what a worldwide hit the show in question has been. If you were to try that over here, most people would just laugh at the self-importance and "forget" to tune in.

My Match.com profile used to have a picture of me in front of Television City with my 'TPIR' audience name tag on. No one ever commented on it.

Funny that this would happen at work, as we've just been talking about this here. While dealing to my boss and her friend at the casino, we were talking about the 70s Match Game. The boss's friend insisted that Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly were married. I tried to explain that Charles was gay, but she would hear none of it, so I didn't press the discussion any further.

While you're at it, explain to your friend that Paul Lynde was married to Rose Marie.

Tell your friend to watch this:

Strictly Come Dancing is another British rip-off: it's just Celebrity Dance Fever.  :-p

And Idol goes back at least to Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts (or its British equivalent, arrived at independently of US producers), although I'm sure the more senior members of this forum can come up with an even older example.

Heck, Hollywood has been re-making its own movies for almost as long as movies have been made in Hollywood.  In the entertainment industry, there really is nothing new under the sun.

Yeah? Well we invented television. :)

Come Dancing began in 1949 on the BBC, for reference.

Along the lines of "Brett and Charles were married"....

It drives me CRAZY when "Family Feud" comes up in a conversation, and people insist that Richard Dawson is the dead host.

Someone actually went to the trouble to setup www.richarddawsonlives.com to prove the naysayers wrong!

Meanwhile, in Vigodaville...

Something I find frustrating is merely watching some of the modern shows.  I know full well that I could do better...but since I don't have the right 'look', its highly doubtful I'd ever be cast as a contestant.

It also frustrates me when I see members of this community who obviously have talent but aren't eligible for many jobs in the industry because they don't have a college degree.

I think what bugs me most is when someone says they're not a fan of game shows at all.  My sister's husband is one of them...I remember during WWTBAM's great success of about 10 years ago, we were all watching the show at my place one night and he said he's just not interested in the genre.  In fact, they even get GSN on digital cable but recently told me they've never watched it.

I can understand people not being as fanatical as us...but to just not even casually catch an episode or two here and there...I just don't get it!

This amuses me, because I really, honestly can't think of an industry that cares LESS about your level of education.
