Today Tonight now does reports on American contestants?

Just how slow is news in Australia? :-)

As far as David Madden goes -- I happen to know the young woman who ended Madden's winning streak (she sang and played the organ at my wedding).  She said David was a nice guy -- just very shy and awkward, and that awkwardness would come out during the show -- particularly when he interacted with Alex and the other contestants.

Kati Knudsen -- when I appeared on WWTBAM (in 2001), it was during the time when out-of-towners would get airfare and hotel comped by the show, with the additional perk of a driver taking you from the airport to the hotel and back.  I struck a conversation with one driver, who mentioned that he'd been a driver for WWTBAM since the show began in 1999.

I asked him what the contestants were like on arrival and departure -- were most of the contestants "regular folk" or did they have large egos?  He said "99%" of the contestants were good sports with no ego whatsoever.  However, he said one contestant gave him fits both to the hotel and to the airport -- Kati Knudsen.

He claimed that, on the way to the hotel, Knudsen spent most of the trip proclaiming that she knew a quicker way to the hotel, and got upset when he declined her request for help.  Post-show, said driver said Knudsen spent the whole trip to the airport arguing with her husband, openly expressing her disgust with what happened during her taping and threatening to sue anyone within breathing distance of her.  He also claimed that he drove at least one other contestant from that taping to the airport -- and said contestant spent a good 10-15 minutes complaining how Knudson's behavior in the green room and on-set ruined the day.

Not sure how true the above is -- but it was truly an eye opener!

I think GSN ran that episode within the past few days.

I bet the personnel at the hotel she stayed at and the airline she flew have stories, too.

When J! had the five-day limit, if a player won his fifth game wagering to win by $1 instead of tying, I'd root against him in the ToC.

This reminds me of the horrid youth sports leagues that are out there these days where "there are no losers".

Flawed dislike, IMO.

I dunno that it is. I don't think I'd want to become champion just because an outgoing five-day champ decided to fold up the tent.

My quibble is that Mark called Jay's "dislike" "flawed," and it isn't. Jay gave a reason as to why he doesn't like that, and it passes muster. Frankly, you can say "I like to root for Harvard professors," or "I generally root against red-headed housewives." I might disagree with the conclusion, but the reasoning isn't what I have a problem with.

If I had the choice between $20,000 and the tie, with the return trip that a tie allows, and $2,000 and bus fare home while my opposition wins with $20,001, I want the money. Every single time. Pride won't pay off my car or mortgage.

There's a difference between being in a runaway, and betting to finish in a tie, and betting from the lead so that second wins if he 1) is right and 2) bets the lot. And on that fifth day, you're gone anyhow, right? Why not leave the door open?

I don't even recall the outgoing champion back-door being used until 1998 or so, and it wasn't used regularly until the season before the winnings limit was revoked.

The fact that apparently, you have to play fairly and nicely...and if someone wants to have an edge, that's not considered sportsmanlike.

/Has no issues when a team runs up the score.

Okay, well, that's your opinion, and I gave my reasoning why I thought it was invalid and why I agree with Mark. You may accept or reject my assessment of your opinion as you see fit.

As matter of fact, my reaction was precisely, "What are you afraid of, he'll come back and beat you in the Tournament of Champions?"
