How on Earth did I miss that? My only memory of seeing Rafferty CS was on one of those rare days when the aerial would pick up stations from Milwaukee and Grand Rapids.

Why would they? S&P's job is to make sure the game is played fairly. Since there's no opponent that would get screwed from this, calling the game off and saying "okay, we'll just give you the most you can possibly win at this point" is not only fair, it's advantageous in the player's favor.

Really, it makes sense. I'm sure somewhere a DoND beancounter figured out that giving someone $500 (or whatever; I'm sure they figured out exactly where the line is) and stopping the game is cheaper that whatever the production costs would be (and in this case "production costs" are more than just studio time, or, indeed, money) to continue playing out a stinker.

But the 'stinker' is one of the best reasons for me to watch! Why would I want to tune in if there isn't the possibility of watching a complete 'Epic Fail' in progress?

At this point a name change for the show should be in order. Something like "Deal, no Deal, or whatever we feel should hit the cutting room floor".

I could be completely off base, but I'd consider an Epic Fail on DoND to be more of "you're down to one large case and (n < 6) smaller cases, and you go anyway and open the one large case" rather than "you've opened every large case in the first three rounds." In the first scenario, you had a chance to escape with good money and blew it; in the other case you never really had the chance to escape with good money.

OTOH, I could see where the latter would be classified an Epic Fail. But the former is more interesting to watch.

The difference between the two cases is that in the latter case, I would be more inclined to feel sorry for the contestant. In the former case, I would be much more inclined to laugh derisively.

Exactly. The Nelson Muntz moment is when someone gets *too* greedy. A player who opens up all of the reds is guilty only of bad luck.

Correct. I do feel for the people who blow through all the big cases in at least the first two rounds, if not the first round alone. That sucks. People who give up massive $100K+ bank offers only to get $5? Ha ha.
