If you were guaranteed a single appearance on the game show of your choice, past or present--what would you pick?
I'll weigh in with my choice later.
-
For me, I'd go with The Price Is Right. I know all the pricing games pretty much by heart, have a fairly good knowledge of what certain things cost & it's fun to watch & even play along at home on most pricing games. I sure wish I can see in oerson what all the hubbub is about with this show.

Prolly Wheel, during the shopping era. Either that or Card Sharks. I'm still weighing that one. ;-)
Would've said $ale of the Century (Perry), but you could win more on Wheel or CS.

Concentration

When I first read the question I immediately thought of "Millionaire", because I'd love the challenge of sitting in the Hot Seat. However, there's no guarantee of winning much if you get a hard or obscure stack. So if I could pick just one, it would probably be "Press Your Luck" - partly because even after they changed the patterns, I knew a few of them myself - and it seems like one of the easiest shows out there!
-
I would certainly have the most fun playing "Press Your Luck;" even if I didn't win any money, it would still be a great experience.
As far as a show that I felt I could do well on, I would probably say "Sale of the Century." The questions weren't that bad, and neither were the winnings! It was also one of my favorite game shows as a kid and was so full of excitement, especially if you knew someone was getting close to the cash jackpot.

-
I've always wanted to be on "Double Dare." I know I'm way past the age limit now, but this is all just fantasy anyway, right?
-
I have several. Any versions of Password, Pyramid, also Blockbusters. And also You Don't Say now that I know the format, simply because I love word/category association games.
Also Card Sharks and TPIR wouldn't be too shabby either.
The good part is that I could be at least on one of the shows I mentioned.
-
I'm going to say Match Game 7x... because the show looks like it would be a hoot to be a contestant on.
That... and I'm envious of Gene Rayburn's microphone.
-
I have several.
Well, learn how to count to one, first of all.
As for my pick--I think I'd go with The Joker's Wild, Barry. How could you lose with questions easy as those?

Actually, now that I think about it.. that's another show. I know it sounds a little silly, but if I were to have ever become famous, I would have loved to be a panelist on MG'7x. Also several other panel shows, To Tell The Truth, WML?, etc.
Well, then, Modor, I'd just pick Pyramid as one. It was difficult for me to come up with just one at first, 'cause there are so many.
-
As always, this question can be answered in two ways, at least for me.
Which show would I be more likely to take a great deal of money away from? Wheel, no question. The contestants they're bringing in are morons, and they have such an acute case of Mo' Money Syndrome over there that I'd have to actually make a concerted effort to walk away with less than ten grand.
So if I could only be on one show, that's what I'd do to maximize my profits.
Now, if money isn't an issue, and I wanted to go on the show to play the game? $25,000 Pyramid, please, no question. The Jack Narz Concentration would run second, and any incarnation of Sale would be third.
-
"J!" It's still the gold standard of Q&A shows and I would die happy after being on it.
"Pyramid" a close second.
-
My first choice would be Wheel, 1997-98 season.
Since the question only asked for one show, that's all I'm giving (although I have several more I would like/have liked to be on.
-
"Sale of the Century". With all those questions, and prizes only "Wheel" could top, who can resist??
-
I'd go with CBS $25,000 Pyramid or 80s $100K, and with Markie Post as my celebrity partner.
-
'Pyramid' a couple of years ago.
-
Password -- with Betty White as my celebrity partner.
-
The Clark $25,000/$100,000 Pyramid, no questions about it. The. Best. Game. Show. Ever.
Brandon Brooks
-
I kinda like the NBC "Jackpot!" I'd be on for five days, get some face time on TV, make some friends, get to hang out with Geoff Edwards and maybe share a Super Jackpot that could be worth $50,000 and if I answer the most riddles at the end of the week I'd win a brand new car.
-
Oooooooh definitely Sale of the Century, easily one of the best out there. Big cash jackpot, easy easy questions, the whole 9 yards.
-
For me, It would have to be Password with Betty White as celeb partner. There are a few others, but I shall keep them to myself. :-D
-
I'd opt for either Classic Concentration or Press Your Luck, both have good prizes ( unless you If you count Balans chairs good)
-
Depends. For money, Millionaire...I've passed the Jeopardy test so I know I could do a reasonably good job; I'll take my questions as they come.
For fun, either Password (classic version) or Eye Guess (just to be on a show with Bill Cullen at his best)
Yeah, that's three. What are you going to do, send me to game show jail? Or sentence me to edit some of the stranger posts on the board?
-
Definitely Pyramid, Clark era ($25K/$100K). It's somewhat natural to wish to be on the game show you love the most. Although that can be debated.
-

My top 10 list of game shows (past & present) I would like to get on.
10). The Dating Game (I would love to quiz 3 bachelorettes & hear the Spanish Flea theme for a change).
9). The Gong Show (Probably end up being gonged like Eunice off The Carol Burnett Show).
8). Let's Make A Deal (Trade in Monty's cookie jar for a ZONK!)
7). Pro-Fan (Definately my cup of tea; The Good Game of the North!)
6). Hollywood Squares-Marshall (I'll take Paul Lynde to block).
5). Card Sharks-CBS or Rafferty (After placing the Jokers, I would do my John Davidson or Betty White cry, "On the count of 3, 1, 2, 3!")
4). The Match Game-60's (Would definately go wild if I win, hearing that famous ship's bell!).
3). The Joker's Wild-CBS (Hit the Joker's Jackpot & do the Russian circus goofy win theme dance, HEY!)
2). The Price Is Right (Doing the Curly shuffle after winning $10K on Grand Game & screaming my famous cry!)
And the #1 answer is....
CLASSIC CONCENTRATION! I'm good @ making matches & deciphering them puzzles.

Good lord. I guess people don't know how to read the topic subject line after all. Mark said pick ONE show, not TEN.
-
I'd join most of y'all on the PYL bandwagon for the frenzied pace and the chance to win boku buig bucks...
However if it was for a common knowledge Q & A, I'd love to have had the chance to play the Tom Kennedy version of Split Second.
-
Either Pyramid or Password, I daresay.
-
I fared well playing an offshoot of "Sale of the Century" freshman year. The questions weren't that bad, and I wouldn't mind having to build my bank for 8 days at a time...
...so I'll say the Winner's Board or Shopping Era versions of "$ale"
-
My choice would be Press Your Luck, for obvious reasons.....
BTW, I actually tried out for that show in 1984, but didn't make it.
Cordially,
Tammy Warner--the 'Martha Smith of the Big Board!'
-
For me, single appearance + guaranteed = Wheel of Fortune, Toss-Up era. It is a rare day when I don't get at least two of the Toss-Ups before a player does, and that would give me a better chance of starting two rounds. Yeah, there are Bankrupts, but IMO, as long as I can get two or three spins in, my chances of hitting one are going to drop severely. "I was six wedges away from it on my last spin, and I'm three away this spin. Time to spin it a little harder/softer!"
My answer is based on the wording of the question, though. I'd much rather be on Jeopardy! than Wheel in the "real world'. But I wouldn't want to be on J! if I hadn't proven I belonged there, whereas the Wheel audition process is more of a speedbump to weed out the non-perky crossword types.
-
One nobody's mentioned is Scrabble, at least as far as fun to play. Actually doing the Sprint round, having to call out letters and press the giant plunger, that would be a hoot.
Considering the money, though, then I'd have to go with $100,000 Pyramid.

Don't even bother trying to fight that battle. I've asked such questions many a time and made it clear that just one choice is to be made and sure enough some dingbat comes along with every show or emcee in the encyclopedia.
This has been The Don Howard Commentary. And now, to our question from the original posting: The Hollywood Squares.
Every answer is a 50:50 shot and if you have a teense of knowledge, you ought to get a good chunk of them correct.

I also used to want to turn a letter on the board, but technology has rendered that dream obsolete....

I'd have to go with Scrabble also. It was one of my favorites in the 80s as a kid, and Chuck really seemed to be having so much fun on it that you can't help but have a good time. It really had it all.. laid back fun (the main game), skill against the clock and another oppenent (the sprint round) and excitement (the bonus sprint).

Umm, I put more than one show, too, even though it said pick one. If you're gonna flame, go across the board, and not just attack some because they've proven their cluelessness in the past.
-
Kids, kids, kids...play nicely. No one is immune to the trials and tribulations of life. If there's one thing I've learned on this board it's that there will always be someone who doesn't pound to the beat of the same drummer.
Examples of such:
You say give me a top 5, and someone gives you a top 10 with honorable mentions.
You say name your favorite host, and someone gives you a laundry list.
You say name an encyclopedia of useless facts, and someone says Zach...ok that was actually on topic.
Accept it, and move the heck on with your lives people.
Oh, and my 2 chascos would go with the $100,000 Pyramid...in the Yahoo versions of Pyramid, I can attest that in the time I spent prior to hosting, I was a pretty solid cluegiver and an adequate receiver.

You should've also put a line in there about needing to submit to an exhaustive background check. What is this crap about going "1-2-3 turn the key" on "Card Sharks", anyway? Jesus...

TPIR hands down
-
Tough choice. First thought Barry Joker (had a chance for that)..but if it were one show, I guess I'll take Cullen Blockbusters. Even at my advanced age, I should be able to hit the button first a fair amount of times, and even if I lost, it still would be fun spending time with Cullen at what some would agree was his best last hurrah.
-
TPIR, 'cause I've always wanted to meet Bob Barker. My parents say they could prop me up in front of the TV when I was just a baby and I would sit there transfixed whenever Bob came on, which, in those days, could have been on TorC, TPIR, or any of the various beauty pageants, parades, etc., that he hosted. Probably I saw him on TorC the most because my dad loved that show.
If I could be on the show at any time in its history, I think I'd want to be on during the early to mid-80's, when Janice, Dian, and Holly were there and the "family" image was still intact; Bob would actually have time to talk to me on the air; and I'd get to enjoy a great Johnny O. warmup.
-
I'd also go w/$otC for the reasons Dustin specified...fairly easy Qs, and even if you don't win, you can still walk away w/a few thousand $$$s in cash/prizes.

I don't know if I should give a better explanation to this, other than just the fact it is Sale.
(get ready for a boring explanation)
I originally wanted to be on "Wheel of Fortune" as a contestant because its pretty easy: spin, buy, solve, win. Fairly simple format. I already accomplished that feat recently as a contestant (my show is supposed to air on November 28th). With that in mind, I had to pick the other show, which is just as simple (figuratively speaking).
You simply just answer questions, buy prizes (if you feel like it), and take small (but sometimes neccessary) risks, in order to build a cash jackpot. As easy as that may seem, its the process of keeping the audience at home (and in-studio)...keep the audience on their feet, and you'd produce well (if you're good at doing it under pressure)
The prizes on $ale were about on-level with Wheel (in the 80s/early 90s), so you could walk out with Wheel with a bundle, as well as "$ale"
In a way, both shows draw their parallels, and since one dream's already been fulfilled, then I can gladly say of my other dream.
I'm done, let me enjoy my birthday cake.
-Dave
-
"$ale of the Century" for me as well.
-
It would be unforgiveable if I didn't make my selection...and only one show would do...
"Queen For A Day", of course...
And you can be sure that Randy Amasia would have appeared on the same episode with me, leaving us to try and one-up each other's God-awful depressing stories, just so we could get that damn sash, robe and crown...
