This past weekend, TV Land showed the classic "Password" episode of "The Odd Couple." It had me wondering, what are your favorite game show-related sitcom episodes?

Other than the one you mention, I very much enjoyed The Brady Brides episode where Jan and Marcia and their husbands appeared as contestants on The Newlywed Game with special guest star Bob Eubanks and special guest voice (that's how he was billed) Johnny Jacobs.

My favorite was when "Gimme A Break!" had Nell and Addy go on "best Friends Week" on Wheel of Fortune. Oddly enough they played each other (with no third contestant). It aired in early 1984, just about the time that Wheel of Fortune was starting to take it off (I first got re-interested in the show around then).

Mine was Episode #23 of The Monkees, "Captain Crocodile", which saw them lampoon Goodson-Todman mainstays What's My Line? (What's My Scene?) and To Tell The Truth (To Tell A Fib) in a fantasy sequence. Micky Dolenz played the moderator, while Michael Nesmith, David Jones and Peter Tork served as the panelists.

I happen to like the NBC-era "Mama's Family" episode where they appear on Richard's Feud.  I will probably always equate "a letter" to the question "Name something you wind up" because of it.

"Bunny rabbit! Bunny rabbit!"

Also, think about this: "Mama's Family" was originally on NBC, even though it was a spinoff of a CBS staple, and Feud was on ABC at that time.  Talk about spreading across networks.

The "Let's Make a Deal" episode is funny too.  Oddly enough, both of those "Odd Couple" episodes aired during the same season.

I also thought the "Spin City" episode where Paul goes on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" was funny.  That was our first look at what would happen if somebody actually won the million - John Carpenter did it for real a few days later.

Neil (pointing at book): "Sez Rick 'ere."

Christmas episode of "The Simpsons", where Marge has to go on Jeopardy to help the family pay off their debt to the city. Ironically, she ends up with -$5200.

The episode of "Fresh Prince" where Will, Carlton, Jazz, and Tyriq (minor character) go on "Double Trouble" (special guest Bob Eubanks!)

BOB: What is the capital of Ohio?
TYRIQ: That would be the capital "O," Bob.
BOB: (obviously confused) "O?"
TYRIQ: Yeah, capital "O", h-i-o.
BOB: Judges?
(ding!)

Obviously, the Cheers episode where Cliff goes on "Jeopardy!", and gets categories such as; 'Beer', 'Mothers and Sons', and 'Celibacy'.

Guilty pleasure: Golden Girls episode where they go on "Grab That Dough!"

But the "Password" episode of The Odd Couple is second to none.

There was also an episode of Cybill where she was vying to be the new singer on a revival of Name That Tune.  The show itself wasn't much, but good on the producers for bringing Tom Kennedy on for that one.

The Spin City episode had flipped my mind, but that's a good one too.  Richard Kind is at his most manic when trying to answer that last question, and who could forget Rags?

I remember catching that episode last year, and it really made me wonder if any reality or game show producers were inspired by that one episode. :-P It was almost scary how there are shows that play just like that episode.

This is sort of a twist on the topic of this post, but I enjoyed the episodes of Password Plus where Vicki Lawrence and Carol Burnett played as Mama and Eunice for part of the week they were on.  Quite funny.

I also enjoyed the Night Court episode where Bull goes on "What Am I?"  Anyone else remember that one?

I play Martin Winkdale introducing Herman, Lillie, Grampa, etc.

Smart Guy - "A Little Knowledge"
I'm the generic game show announcer when Taj Mowry appears on a Jeopardy-type show.

For a not-so-great looking little kid, she turned out all right.

I remember an E! special on her from a few years back (not "True Hollywood Story" - this had a different name reserved for stars whose lives aren't screwed up) - she had a 38DD chest at age 15, and had breast reduction surgery because they were giving her back problems.

Okay, on we go.  It's not a sitcom, but The Carol Burnett Show episode featuring Eunice on The Gong Show was both funny and touching.

Speaking of Gong Show, I recall an episode of "What's Happening" where a children's chorus appeared to sing "Bubblin' Brown Sugar". Chuck Barris wasn't in that one, so the winner was announced by one of the panelists immediately after the chorus (who won). I still found it bizarre that the host didn't announce the winner.

And on "Laverne and Shirley" (after the move to California), Squiggy appeared on "the Dating Game", hosted by Jim Lange. One moment I recall from that episode is that Squiggy tore off one of the letters from "The Dating Game" logo. Also, the end credits, where Jim, Squiggy and the contestants danced while the "Laverne & Shirley" theme played.

A favorite of mine is the episode of "Sanford and Son" with Fred, Lamont and Bubba on "The Gong Show".

The funniest part of the episode is when Chuck Barris introduces the guys, and Fred immediately goes over to the panel, collects their mallots, and thows them off the stage!

This episode just came out on the Season 6 DVD.

The top three GS sitcom eps of all time were both of the Odd Couple shows (LMAD & Password) and the L & S Dating Game ep which was a riot ("Number Two, she used to call me!")

One GS ep I missed in its only network telecast that I'd love to see if it's still in the vault is "The Paul Lynde Show" ep where Howie competes on a show called "Beat The Buzzer".  I was forced to wait till Sunday afternoons to see this series in my area back in 1972, and the station wound up airing this ep a half hour before the time TV Guide said they would (DAMN YOU, WOI!!!!  You should have been sold to a larger interest 30 years before you actually were!)

I vaguely remember that episode.  Didn't TVLand have that show for a while?  I remember seeing an episode of it not that long ago.  It's interesting that the episode was only seen on the network once.  In doing some research through old TVGuide listings, I've discovered that each episode of a season isn't necessarily repeated over the summer.  In some cases, episodes are seen three times during the year, and others just that once - which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Another sitcom episode that comes to mind is "Happy Days".  During the show's second season, Richie goes on a show called "Big Money", and the episode touches a bit on the quiz show scandals of the '50s.

EDIT:  I think I've just set the record for most uses of the word "episode" in one post!

If we're not limited to the number of additions, I'll add the other "Mama's Family" game show episode, where Thelma's on "Jeopardy!"  And since someone put in Thelma and Eunice's appearances on P+ (playing against McLean Stevenson and Joanna Gleason from "Hello Larry", by the way), I'll toss in Vicki's appearances as Thelma on HS for good measure.

There's also an episode of "227" where the characters play against each other on Ray's Feud.

Does the "Coast to Coast Big Mouth" episode of "The Dick Van Dyke Show" count?

And weren't there game show parodies on "The Honeymooners"/"The Jackie Gleason Show"?

If we eventually add movies (which I'm not saying we will, just for a possible website compilation), I'd have to add the IGAS scene from "It Happened to Jane".  Not only is it in color, there's also a cameo by Gene Rayburn later in the film, not to mention the Kovacs factor.

One of my favorite eps of The Honeymooners is "The $99,000 Answer," in which Ralph goes on a $64,000 Question-type show (with the host played by real-life host Jay Jackson) and selects the category "Popular Songs."  He goes all out practicing, with Norton playing the piano and warming up before every song with the opening bars of "Swanee River."  Then, when it comes time to go on the air . . . well, I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet.

Ralph (paraphrased):  "I'm goin' for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow."
Alice:  "Just go for the gold, Ralph.  You already have the pot."

I Love Lucy had a few episodes with Frank Nelson playing Freddie Fillmore, host of audience-participation shows.

That's right! One of the Gleason shows had Ralph and Alice ready to play Beat The Clock with Bud Collyer when time ran out, so they had to come back next week. Alice wouldn't come back, so Ralph, desperately wanting to win a tv set, made Norton come on the show with him and help with the stunts. It was Bud and what looked like the authentic set - if both shows were coming out of CBS' New York studios on a Saturday night, it made things awfully convenient. It's on MPI's "Honeymooners: Lost Episides" VHS vol. 11. Now this probably stretches the definition, as this was more of a variety show sketch than a pure sitcom.

It WAS the authentic BTC set!

According to Phil Wayne Rossi (who spent his childhood at BTC - his father produced it) the CBS theaters where the Gleason Show and BTC were broadcast were around the corner from each other around Broadway and 53rd Street iirc (Bricon can help with the studio numbers and addresses). There was a shared alley adjacent to the backstage areas of each. Gleason would often stroll over to BTC to watch the stunts being rehearsed. He thought they were inventive and fun, and he was a fan of the show. That's pretty much how that episode came to be.
Gleason would often stroll over to BTC to watch the stunts being rehearsed. He thought they were inventive and fun, and he was a fan of the show. That's pretty much how that episode came to be.

As I recall, Mr. Gleason made an appearance as himself on Beat The Clock, too. I believe the show was changing time periods and BtC and The Honeymooners were going to be back-to-back as a result of this change so they were cross-promoting.

Let's not forget Julia Louis-Dreyfus's horrid sitcom Watching Elle where the cast tries to win a trip on Karn's Family Feud.

This episode was spoofed when Pinky and the Brain played Gyp-Parody! (Brain needed $99,000 to rule the world and had $49,500 going into the final question).  The question revolved around Ralph's "right in the kisser" line from The Honeymooners.

Weren't the names of the contestants in the courtroom scene before the game named "Stempel" and "Van Doren"?
Bumping up this thread for a good reason...

We'll find out if the people in the courtroom are named Stempel and Van Doren soon enough.  My TiVo's listings show that this episode will air on TV Land on Sunday 8/14 at 10:30 AM Eastern, as part of TV Land's weekend-long Night Court marathon.

If you haven't seen this episode, I recommend catching it, and not just because it's a game show-centric episode.  This is one of my favorite episodes of Night Court.

I would have to say both Odd Couple episodes.

Also, it was a real short scene, but on King of Queens when Doug dreamt he was on Wheel of Fortune.

Some of my favorites also are two episodes of The Golden Girls. "Grab That Dough" where they fly to LA to be on GTD which was hosted by guest-star Jim McKrell of Celebrity Sweepstakes. They wernt through several instances of bad luck, like missing their hotel reservations which meant they had to sleep in the lobby. They get their belongings stolen, but luckily Sophia still has the tickets so they can go to the show. The four women argue and wind up competing on seperate teams, and at the end they win a year's supply of soup! Also "Questions and Answers" where Dorothy tries out for Jeopardy!. She dreams that she played against Rose and neighbor Charley from Empty Nest. In her dream, she gets the final question wrong. She protests and none other than Mr. Merv Griffin himself walks on stage and says it can be whatever answer he wants it to be. (I can't remember what Dorothy's response was, tho' right now), but after this I do remember that Merv said "No parting gifts!" and he and Alex high-five.

The Parkers and Family Ties are two others. On both shows they go on game shows to play for their schools, with what I thought were very humorous results, especialy on FT where Alex and Mallory and Mallory gets some answers right just because the judges flirt with her, and Alex freezes on camera.

I would like to include a memorable episode of "That Girl" in which Ann Marie goes on "The Mating Game"[Obviously a Dating Game parody] and is unaware that her boyfriend "Donald" is one of the three potential dates and ends up choosing the character played by Alejandro Rey.

I wish I'd known about this in advance:  Monday night's King of Queens was a rerun of the episode in which Arthur, played by Jerry Stiller, sees a clip of his appearance on Pyramid, which was actual footage from Stiller's celebrity appearance.

Cuppa more: There's a Happy Days where Richie goes on a rigged game show (speaking of Stepel & Van Doren) called Big Money. Dave Madden, fresh from his role as Reuben Kincaid, plays the host, Jack Whippett.

David Ruprecht played the host of a game called "What Do You Know" on Family Matters toward the end of the series.

I remember an E! special on her from a few years back (not "True Hollywood Story" - this had a different name reserved for stars whose lives aren't screwed up) - she had a 38DD chest at age 15, and had breast reduction surgery because they were giving her back problems.

People ran an article on her surgery, where she spoke of jogging near her home and having passerby call out "Hey, Punky Boobster!".

Surprised no one's mentioned that Married w/Children had an ep where Bud went on a dating show called You Can't Miss...occasional late-90s GS panelist Bill Maher played the host, Adam Gold, and the role of Bud's date (Candy) was played by none other than a pre-TPiR Chantel Dubay.

I'll elaborate if I may...

The clue was "The American hero buried in Grant's tomb." Rose was ruled correct with her response of "Who is Cary Grant?" Dorothy, of course, responded "Who is Ulysses S. Grant?" and was ruled incorrect. After demanding a re-ruling, Merv Griffin declares that it's his show, and the ruling stands.

Might as well throw in a ref to the Mary Tyler Moore episode with Dian Parkinson...Ted tried out to host a game show pilot called The $50,000 Steeplechase. The lovely Dian was the model on the pilot.
