Title: Your Favorite/Least Favorite Theme Songs
Post by: Dbacksfan12 on September 21, 2004, 04:45:46 PM
With over 400 game shows in the books, what are your favorite, and least favorite theme songs? [Please don't post a list of 35 songs for each category; 3-5 is sufficent]

My favorites:
=========
1. Super Password
2. "Big Wheels"
3. Classic Concentration
4. Hollywood Squares [1986]
5. Whew

My least favorites:
============
1. All Star Blitz
2. Card Sharks/Double Dare
3. The Better Sex
4. "The Savers"
5. The Price is Right [1972]

As a side note: There wasn't ever an attempt to have the syndicated "To Tell the Truth" theme released as a single, was there?

No offense here or anything, but I am curious. Why do you not like the Price is Right theme?

Because it's all subjective. I think the Davidson Squares theme is crap, yet he has it on his favorites list. Why? Because I do.

Great topic, Mark O.!

Top five are in no particular order:

1.  TTD (Hidey put together a masterpiece)
2.  TTTT syndie (very catchy)
3.  TATTLETALES (70s version, the 80s one pales in comparison)
4.  GONG (at least it was done live)
5.  NYSI ("Chump Change"--another classic)

There's also about 18 Honorable Mentions in there.  :)

Bottom three (again in no particular order):

1.  JACKPOT! (Darrow version--"Jet Set" would be one of the 18)
2.  HSq6x (The first theme--like the second one much better, the discoish one just a little bit better)
3.  BUMPER STUMPERS (Good show; theme was just a little too cutesy for my taste)

Among my favorites are: Big Wheels, (I just can't stop dancin' when I hear the opening!) The Match Game-Hollywood Squares Hour, and Gene Gene the Dancing Machine from The Gong Show. Two others which I am also comfortable with All-Star Blitz and Go!  I guess I like repitiveness.

Hollywood Squares/H2 (both themes)
TJW- (Savers)- I think all that synthethic noise causes internal bleeding

Password '60s (along with most other 50s and 60s gs themes...with the exception of 'A Swingin Safari')

LEAST
1. Double Dare/Card Sharks 78 (very overrated)
2. Strike it Rich 86 (very repetitive and boring)

Oh, why not-

Faves:

1. Press Your Luck (high energy, loud, just like the show)
2. Now You See It "Chump Change" (Too "fawnky" for a word game)
3. Bullseye (best theme by Hal Hidey)
4. Hit Man (very much overlooked)
5. Starcade (although not much to it, very catchy)

And.....not so much:

1. Card Sharks '86 (liked everything about the show when I was a kid, hate everything about it now)
2. Play the Percentages (sounds like '80's infomerical music)
3. $OTC '86 remix (took a good, dramatic theme and made it boring)
4. current J! music (feel like I'm watching a nighttime soap- oh wait, I am! All My Jennings)
5. tie- Family Feud '99, Whammy! (3 words: Techno is EVIL.)

Probably because it isn't a game show. I like Conti's theme for The Colbys, too, but that's not a game show either. Meanwhile, Face The Nation is a game show. You see it each week on CBS--the network for Columbias.

Now to our original question:

TOP FIVE FAVES

* Break The Bank 1976 edition
* Match Game 1973-82 incarnation
* Whew!
* Card Sharks/Double Dare I recall someone once referred to this theme as "boss"--perfect description
* High Rollers 1987-88 run

IN THE BASEMENT

* Tic Tac Dough 1990 miniseries (about the only Henry Mancini tune I cannot stand)
* Pyramid 2002-2004 Osmond edition (THUMP! THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!--how long did that take to compose?)
* Whammy! Described by one of our members as looped Casio music--I agree with him/her
* Card Sharks late 80s version. I got reamed for having this opinion a month or so ago. Sorry. I just don't like it.
* Let's Make A Deal 1990 comeback attempt. Yuck.

MAKES ME BURST INTO HYSTERICS

* Beat The Clock Fresh era ("daisy, daisy,....") what the _____?
* Love Me, Love Me Not

$1,000,000 Chance of a Lifetime

Scrabble 93'-Cheezy
Whammy-liked the show, hated the theme/
WOF- Big Band version #1
Monopoly
All Star Blitz
and...one im sure Ill get flamed for....Card Sharks...perry. Sorry folks, but I never cared for this theme!

I don't think anyone will have a good cause to flame you, because it's your opinion.  If someone does flame you, they are a close-minded individual.  That said, I'm sure a certain individual will soon inquire as to why you don't like that theme. In addition, I refuse to clairfy why I dislike Price's theme.
Title: Your Favorite/Least Favorite Theme Songs

Faves:
- Chain Reaction. Surprised I'm the first to mention this one. Love how the escalating strings build tension.
- Jackpot/Shoot For The Stars: Listen carefully and you might hear a little bit of "Oh What A Beautiful Mornin'."
- Password. The post '63 "swing" version I envision Allen and Betty dancing to during the credits.
- Chump Change. Must find a copy of "You've Got It Bad, Girl," the Quincy Jones album it came from.
- Just about any Hal Hidey theme.

Unfaves:
- Tic Tac Dough '90. Yeah, Henry Mancini composed it, but it's just not game show enough.
- What's My Line, post '68 version.
- Go. One of the very few Bob Cobert themes I just didn't like.
- The original LMAD theme. Maybe I'm just too much a product of my generation to appreciate it.
- Trivial Pursuit. Too far out on the EZ-Listening end of the spectrum.

Additions and substitutions may occur, but that's what it looks like at the moment.

This child defends himself more than Bob Barker these days.

And yet, Adam, there is an obvious reason why your posts are laughed at around here. Because not only do you feel the need to focus on the most trivial aspects of someone else's post, you feel the need to not even answer the original question!

The OP called for everyone's opinion of best and worst themes. You could have listed yours. Instead, you feel it's better to get into a pissing match with someone over something you said. And I know that what you asked was innocent enough. It just didn't have anything a damn thing to do with the original question.

Least favorites:

The original plan for the 90s TTTT theme was to have a cappella group Take 6(who had some notoriety around that time, in part due to backing up Don Henley on his solo hit "New York Minute") sing the vocal parts from the 70s theme.

Same thing w/ the current Feud.  The classic theme, as great as that is, just seemed oddly out of place.  The current theme is pretty cool and fits the "feel" of the show.
The original plan for the 90s TTTT theme was to have a cappella group Take 6(who had some notoriety around that time, in part due to backing up Don Henley on his solo hit "New York Minute") sing the vocal parts from the 70s theme.
Good thing they aborted it. What they eventually used was far better and far more distinguished.

Faves:
TTTT '80
Match Game-HS Hour
Password Plus

Hate 'em:
TTTT '90 (I just feel that they tried too hard to take a late-'60s pop song and turn it into some classy work of art.  I appreciate the instrumentation, but the tune didn't fit the instruments that were playing it)
Monopoly

In all fairness, Mark, some names here are a little harder to find than others (although yours, Chris L.'s, and Matt the weather guy's aren't among them).  Some people *want* to hide behind the alias.

Not excusing Adam here, mind you, but there are a few people who have posted here since this place existed (and even back in the Usenet era) of whom I have no idea what their actual names are (and it that wasn't gramatically correct, sue me).

There's a reason for that. I never was very good with names. Except for friends I have known for a long time, I have trouble remembering some people's names. If you all would send me an email with your real names, maybe I would remember them better. Anyway, I will now post my favorite and least favorite themes:

Faves:
Price is Right (current)- Simply the best theme of all time I think
Family Feud (Dawson and Combs)- Fit the country feel of the show well
Family Feud (Karn)- Again fits the feel of the show
Super Password- Awesome theme with a really cool intro
Classic Concentration- Really neat piano twist on one of the two versions of this makes it good to me, though that isn't to say the other version is bad either
Match Game (70's)- Timeless
Card Sharks/Double Dare (70's)- Makes you want to sit up and clap along with it

Least Faves:
Wheel of Fortune (current theme)- No substance to it all
Hot Potato- See above comment
Family Feud (Anderson)- Just like his version of the show, the theme stunk

That's about all I can think of now

I'll bite with the six and six:

Top o' the Line Goodness:

1. The Price is Right (1972)
2. Wheel of Fortune (1983-1989)
3. Jeopardy! (1984-1991, I honestly did not like when they threw out the first 17 seconds of the theme...seemed out of place to me)
4. $ale of the Century '83
5. Scrabble '84 (I know I am in the minority with that one!)
6. Card Sharks 1978 (Very well composed theme)

Bottom o' the Barrel Crap:

1. Pyramid (Osmond)
2. $ale of the Century '87 (I know I am once again in the minority with that one, but that version of the theme seemed too sterile and missed the closing bridge that the original theme had. Maybe the changes that came with the theme is helping me with this decision...)
3. All Star Blitz
4. Chain Reaction (Cullen, way too repetitive)
5. Go! (See no. 4)
6. The Wizard of Odds

These are, of course, in no particular order.

The Inquisitive One

Time to toss my 2 cents into this thread...

Faves, in no order

1.  Hit Man
2.  Whew!
3.  Match Game 98
4.  Break the Bank 76
5.  Make Me Laugh 79, the vocal version
6.  The Love Experts
7.  The Challengers
8.  Now You See It--Chump Change
9.  The $10/$20/$25K Pyramid--Tuning Up
10.  Balderdash (not a typo)

Honorable mention simply for rhyming 'entertain ya' with 'Sylvania'--Beat the Clock "Lights on Broadway" from the early 50s

Least faves, again in no order

1.  Lingo, GSN 3rd season
2.  Family Feud, the theme used for ~90% of the Louie/Karn era
3.  Pyramid
4.  Gambit, the close music
5.  TJW--The Joker's Jive

$64,000 Question
Call My Bluff
Get The Message
Video Village

Some of the ones I like...

MG/HS Hour
Big Wheels (of course, Woolery
Wheel and early Sajak NBC Wheel theme)
Split Second (original....between this and Big Wheels, I think it's an unwritten rule...BONGOS = INSTANT GREAT SONG.  For those of you from the NY area, I also present WPIX's Channel 11 Film Festival theme as another example)
Whew! (would that I could find a clean copy of this)
Hitman (ditto)
Password Plus
Password Plus "going to Alphabetics" theme (the song they usually play as a commercial outro when a match is finished or, yes, when the players walk over to the Alphabetics area)
Press Your Luck
Tuning Up ('70s Pyramids, both the show edit and the long version on the GSN2 CD)
'80s Pyramids (Tuning Up Again?)
100 Mexicanos Dijeron (the more FF-flavored first theme)
Card Sharks (all but, of course, the CASINO theme in 2001)
The Barry-Enright Big Three ala Hidey
Break the Bank '76 (show edit(s))

Random observation: though I like the High Rollers '78 theme, was it just me or did the NBC H-Q Two (HR '78 and Las Vegas Gambit) have themes where the musical piece building up to the title appearing were kind of more exciting than the rest of the song?  (I mean the music that plays when the animated dice appear with either the numbers of "1978" or the "HR" logos, and the music when the word "Gambit" forms)

Another thought: which GS themes spun off into the best musical cues (for wins, bonus game transitions, commercial outros, etc)?  I already mentioned the PW+ "going to Alphabetics" music, and I liked the front game winning jingle as well.  I also liked that part of the CS78 theme used for revealing the Money Cards board.

Family Feud (1976, 1988... 1988 version a tad bit better, but not really that big a difference)
The $25,000/$100,000 Pyramid
Scrabble (1984.  Though not a standout theme, the 1993 theme is entirely underrated)
Tic Tac Dough (1978)
Wheel of Fortune (1983, 1989, and 1992.  In that order)

JM, I'll put in a vote for Bullseye on the "Best Cues" question. All three of the Barry & Enright shows are at the top of the list for prize music. Bullseye is the best, but the other two get points just because there were more cues (OK, so Joker and Tic Tac shared - but there were still more in that shared package than in Bullseye).

Also agree on bongos, as someone who's just barely old enough to remember Channel 11's movie theme. And how about the CBS Special fanfare from the mid to late '70s?

Now, back the GAME SHOW music discussion, already in progress.

Speaking of B-E share cues, gotta give a nod to the Face the Devil cue the TJW of the '80s borrowed from Bullseye (not sure if I ever heard the identical piece on Bullseye, I know part of it was its win cue).  Though not as great, I also liked the FTD music used near the end of Barry's run and in the first Cullen season.  And...well, you're right, all of the Hidey stuff was great!  Not just the Big Three stuff either, there's also Hat Put...dammit, I mean Hot Potato ;-)

How could I have forgotten the CBS Special jingle?!!?
Title: Your Favorite/Least Favorite Theme Songs
Post by: LetsGoMets2003 on September 23, 2004, 09:19:15 PM
Well, for me, TPiR '72's theme is number one. Best theme of all time, you just can't help but get excited and/or sing along. I probably hum it two times a day, at least.

Nickelodeon's Double Dare ('88-93) probably had the best music of any kid game show, and the obstacle course cue is a perfect example of how Edd Kalehoff felt the tension and excitement of those kids running around. Unfortunately, it sounds to me now that I have Nick GaS on digital cable that the cues from Finder's Keepers could've been rejected DD ones.

Supermarket Sweep - Memorable melody, fit the show perfectly, I can hum along to it.

The current Jeopardy! and Wheel themes are quite good, IMO. They're better than the mid 90's Wheel big band and J! bongofied versions. I can see why some of you would think the current arrangement for Wheel has no structure, because it doesn't have that "stick in your brain and repeat throughout the day" feel to it.

Jeopardy '78 - Probably one of the most underrated catchy, laid back themes of the genre. I wish Merv would release it on an album to hear the whole thing.

MG '7X - Has a nice groove to it, and although it's a bit heavy on the synths in some parts, it's really good.

Least favorites - Shop 'Till You Drop, Pictionary '97, Showoffs, Mindreaders, Better Sex, All Star Blitz. Generic GS music that got annoying for me after repeated listenings.

Best: (No particular order)
- $25,000+ Pyramid
- TTTT 90
- Jeopardy, Trebek era (Particularly the first version. There was someone who mentioned upthread not liking that they cut off the first half of the first section, but I liked the sparing use of the very beginning, because the opening couple measures in particular worked to build a tension. The current orchestration is good as a closing theme, but I don't particularly like the new intro and having the first verse of the main theme playing under the contestant introductions.)
- Match Game/Hollywood Squares Hour
- Family Feud '70s
- Blockbusters 80

Honorable mentions:
- Best recent theme: Russian Roulette
- Great song, not so great game show theme: Tuning Up and The Savers

Worst: (No particular order)

Jeopardy! - All versions and even the '97 version to some extent
WoF - Particularly the Big Wheels version, the '89 version, and even the '92 version
HS '86 - Love the sax, b/c it meshes so well w/ the overall look of this version and btw, is it me or does this versions's theme song remind me a lot of Nelly and Kelly's "Dilemma?"

The Wizard of Odds
All New 3's a Crowd - The original version's theme was a lot more bouncier than this, but this was the worst theme song opening I've ever heard of!!!

Obviously, they don't teach kids how to count in school anymore; nor do they teach reading comprehension.

They're probably busy teaching them foreign languages instead.

Honest to Pete, I don't understand how "Post your favorite" can be construed as anything OTHER than "Post your favorite." He's not asking for your CV, he wants to know your favorite theme. Just one. Uno. We're complaining because people like you are showing a failure in basic elementary reading skills.

And I don't find that particularly funny. Certainly not laugh out loud funny.
