Title: $100,000 Pyramid Question
Post by: digiblader on April 19, 2004, 11:34:37 AM
If a champion had become the champ before the tournament and got in, but did not win the $100,000, would he/she come back the next day if the $100K was won?

That, I believe, is correct--whoever was the current champion returned the first day after the tournament to defend their championship, even if they were in the tournament.

Absolutely. And, as well, they were as eligible as anyone else to make it into the next tournament. I remember someone qualifying in such a way (I can't remember her name, she was a hottie with short slicked hair and a bright blue outfit), but her time didn't come close to holding up over the tournament period.

Georgeanne Wright is I believe the lady in question, whose early 19787 tourney appearance and championship regin finished airing last Friday on the 11AM weekday $100K airing.

Yep Georgeanne Wright was one but there is also another one that Chris is talking about.  I wish that I could remember her name too....

Was Georgeanne Wright the lady that was wearing the blue dress and had... very long hair in the back?

Cheers,

Ryan :)

You are exactly right!  She sort of had big eyes that sort of protrude a little.

That would be Heather Davis, who was in the tournament prior to Georgeann Wright's tournament, and whose time held up until the final qualifying day, when Georgeann beat it twice.

Hmm. I don't remember it being all that strong of a time, tho, do you happen to remember offhand what it was?

Now what would happen if the just-qualified reigning champ also won the $100,000 ? Would s/he still return to play again ?

Nah... Bob Stewart would kick them out the door after they won the $100K.

 38 seconds, IIRC.

If memory serves, the first time Georgeann went to the top of the Pyramid, it only made her the third fastest, which meant she wouldn't have played until Tuesday.  The second time, she moved up to second place.

And as for women in blue dresses, you may want to watch/tape Traci Trensch tomorrow on the 6PM ET airing.  :-p

All I can add is that what has been said applies only to the Clark version.  I seem to recall John Davidson telling a contestant in the same position that she would not qualify for the next tournament.  If I were the producer, I'd take a middle ground.  I'd only disqualify someone if they won the first tournament, and even then I'd let said player continue in regulation play after it was over.

Traci always scared me. Those shoulderpads gave her bigger shoulders than I have. :)

But Davidson wasn't exactly known for his accuracy...he also told another contestant, who'd won $10K in the 1st WC, that winning the 2nd would be worth a total of $35K.

Georgeann won the 10K in 36 seconds with David Graf, which tied Mary Mahni's second-place time. Then she won the 25K with Melody Thomas Scott in 34 seconds (even though Dick kept saying it was 35 seconds during the actual tournament), which tied her with Kathleen Dawson's first-place time.

I have to admit that I was looking forward to seeing Heather in the second tournament because it would have been interesting to see a contestant in two different tournaments and because she was such a good player and fun person. But you have to remember that Heather herself knocked Thalia Taylor out of contention the day before the 5th tournament was about to start. Plus, with Georgeann qualifying twice that day, I'd say she was destined to be in that tournament.

[heart goes pitter-patter after watching her win]

Slight nitpick, though...her dress looks more like indigo to me. :-)
