Title: Commercial break before any playing?
Post by: Kevin Prather on May 20, 2022, 06:11:08 PM
In a similar vein to the "cold open" thread, how many game shows were there that threw to a commercial break before ANY game play happened.

Match Game '7x is the only one I can think of.

Off the top of my head:

- 3 For the Money
- The Dating Game
- The Newlywed Game
- Tattletales in the early part of the run
- Break the Bank

TJW & TTD tended to do so during tournaments.

,

When the score at the top of the show was 1 to 0, they took a break before starting the game for that day.

I'm guessing this commercial is in the middle of the jump cut from Lee Vines saying "Yes! It's Password!" to him saying "Now here's your host on Password, Allen Ludden!" in the GSN/BUZZR airings?

All of the TNN game shows (Fandango, Top Card, 10 Seconds) did this as well.

TJW did this through the November 10, 1972 episode and Family Feud did it on 80-226 where 2 Fast Moneys were played due to the birthday celebration, also on some of their special anniversary episodes(all in the ABC daytime counterpart).

Not on the daytime airings. They would always have a simple billboard for whatever product was in the first spot, and then they would do intros, the first minute of ads, then start gameplay. Buzzr has edited these shows so seamlessly that the casual viewer would never suspect otherwise.

Often on the nighttime show, they would do the first commercial before Allen was introduced, then intros and start gameplay.

Early episodes of the original Sale of the Century would cut to commercial after Bill introduced the contestants and Jack asked the champ what they were saving for.

Likely, most of these episodes were from the syndicated package where the edits occurred, it was likely a quick deletion of the sponsor mention on the original airing.

When thinking back on all the network shows aired during the 70's, it seems like most of the shows on NBC and CBS had just an intro for their first segment, then an ad break, then gameplay started in segment two.The Price Is Right was an exception.
By the late 70s, that practice was becoming less common.  ABC shows didn't seem to do it as much (Feud, LMAD).

Much in the same vein when there used to be a short segment in between commercials where it may have plugged tickets, contestant searches, "question research comes from World Book", or "Any player who wins x games wins a new car".

Most episodes of G.E. College Bowl did this - especially after it moved from CBS to NBC.
