Title: Sore losers caught on camera
Post by: Bob Zager on March 26, 2022, 01:03:30 PM
When was the last time you'd seen a moment where a losing contestant showed his/her own hurt feelings during the broadcast.  Last week, a lady contestant (whose name was April January, no joke), didn't win on syndicated Concentration and just wouldn't look at the camera, with a frown on her face, in the closing moments, even though host Jack Narz, and the other contestant waved with smiling faces.

I recall a very angry contestant on Alex Trebek's Double Dare, openly arguing about how the judges should've told her how specific she had to be.  Instead of saying "The Washington Post," she'd said "The Post."  They then asked for a more specific answer.  All she said was, "it's a newspaper," and was ruled incorrect.  After returning from a commercial break, Trebek explained that she needed to be specific, and the contestant angrily said, "you should've asked for the city!"

Of course, who could forget the sore loser on GSN's Friend or Foe, when his partner chose Foe and got the entire pot of money to himself after they worked together to build it up.  The loser was bleeped audibly and visually at the mouth.

Years ago, I remember watching “That’s My Dog” and the daughter on the losing team was on the verge of tears. Steve Skrovan gave her a high-five to help make her feel better.

There used to be a “Hollywood Squares” clip with an older black man who lost the round and the chance at a Secret Square prize. As Peter tossed to break, you could see the contestant mouthing a few choice words.

Admittedly, he got hosed, having received the passed spin from the contestant in 3rd.

Wasn't there a clip on here at one point of some overseas College Bowl-type quiz show (the audio from it wasn't in English, I remember that much) where one of the losing players kicked his podium over and stormed out of the studio at the end of the game?

There was, it was an Icelandic quiz bowl titled Gettu Betur. It seems like they wiped it off YouTube, but this Twitter post still has it.

It was edited out, but apparently when Merle Glickman was a contestant on Millionaire and answered a question wrong, she was openly hostile towards Meredith and yelled "Why didn't you slow me down?!"

According to someone who was at the taping, security escorted her out and when the episode aired the outburst was replaced with Meredith throwing to commercial.

I remember watching this when it happened. There was a very abrupt cut and Meredith clearly seemed frazzled.

There was a Fun House episode, a tournament episode, I think. The team that lost was obviously very upset, and JD Roth gave his usual "you guys were awesome" speech as they were presented with the Fun House game, and one of them said "We weren't awesome, we SUCKED!" That one was on YouTube, wish I could see that again.

There was also an episode of CBS TJW where a young lady named Isa cried as Jack tried to console her, and of course in this format, she lost out on several prizes for losing the game. Not long after, Isa's daughter competes, and takes her loss better.

On one episode of LMAD with Bob Hilton, there was a lady contestant that was obviously upset about losing out on a trip to Paris. Similarly, there was a clown contestant on The All New LMAD. The lady was playing against someone else in a simple game where there was a special deck of cards, and she could either take the cash represented by the card or go for a door. Since it was $500 cash, she figured the door would be better... it was a zonk. She was close to tears as Monty playfully tells her she should be smiling, and sings "Laugh Clown Laugh." At the end of the show, Monty goes back to the clown and offers her a chance at $300 by asking the lady a simple question about the materials the 3 pigs used in the story. She seemed much more pleased as Monty gave a zonked contestant a rare chance at some redemption. (I think Monty felt bad for her and something struck and his Jiminy Cricket was telling him to give her an easy shot at some money.)

If I'm not mistaken, the Zonk she ended up with was three pigs and Monty started the end-of-show quick deals by asking if anyone on the trading floor had three pigs.

Sort of... Monty simply acknowledged "And everybody's happy... everyone except this lady..." and that's when he went into asking the lady the question about the materials the 3 pigs used to build their houses. That was the only time I've seen Monty offer something else to a zonked contestant at the end. This lady would've gotten some nice prize in exchange for the pigs anyway, but I wouldn't know what they would offer.

Three come to mind for me:

Blockbusters--The family pair was father/daughter. Daughter mispronounced an answer and was ruled incorrect. On a subsequent question, the solo player fluffed the pronunciation of an answer and got credit for it. Daughter jumps in and clearly says "I don't see how that's different!" And her father shushes her. Solo player goes on to win the match and you could see smoke coming out of the daughter's ears as Bill is saying goodbye to the family pair. And to be honest, I'm on her side. Either one is fine, but you have to be consistent about that stuff.

Fun House--A team's cart toppled during the Grand Prix, very close to the finish line. JD is visibly concerned for them and distracted as he's waving the checkered flag for the other team. When they go back to the podiums to tally up the scores, there's a very obvious edit and you can tell that they stopped tape for a while. JD goes right into a long explanation about how the official rule is that your tokens have to be inside your bag and in your cart when you cross the finish line in order to be counted, and when the team toppled, their tokens spilled everywhere, so the team that crossed first was instantly the winning team without even counting their own tokens, and the losers were visibly fuming while JD stood there and explained it. It was pretty clear that the bad news had already been broken before they restarted tape.

The New Treasure Hunt--Contestant in the second game gets klunked, and it's like a scene out of a movie; you see her face slowly contort as she starts to realize there's nothing else coming, she actually got klunked. Closing segment, Emile and Geoff reveal which box has the money and she RUNS back onstage and screams "I wanted that one! I meant to pick that one!" And Geoff just kinda has to talk over her and hastily sign off. During the credits, they stay on a very wide shot of the entire studio, and you can see Mike Metzger trying to calm her down.

Reminds me of some of my players at the casino.

"I meant to double down on that eleven!"
"Yeah, and I meant to finish college. What's your point?"

Can we count celebrities?  Because the easy answer is Captain Kirk himself and his chair.

Nothing to do with the game, but George Peppard too.

I've always found that a riot, and it's cool that a celebrity would care that much. It's pretty obvious he was acting (as it was in most of Bill's work.)

I've often found Monty condescending, and I wince how I imagine this, so it's cool of him to go back.

I can’t imagine why not. In that case, Tony Danza definitely qualifies.

One from Weakest Link.

https://youtu.be/R3tOyKyUz_o?t=58m

And I can't find it right now, but there's an episode of UK Weakest Link where the losing contestant says in the post-game interview that he planned on suing Anne Robinson for defamation.

There's an episode of Match Game that GSN ran within the past year - so it's either '75 or '76 - where a male contestant won two games but blew the Super Match each time.  When he was being carouselled off, he said something like "I hate all of you".

Not something I'd be comfortable with.  A lot of people want to be on these shows, so if they pick you over many of the others, you should at least show appreciation for the opportunity - especially since he wasn't wronged in any way that I could see.

I don’t know if TANLMAD did anything but the standard GS consolation prizes (see the many episodes that aired on Buzzr)…$300 was probably going to be much better than her other option.

There's an Art James-hosted "It's Academic" out there where a contestant buzzes in and gives the answer but his light doesn't come on. Art recognizes the team whose light does come on. They give the answer and get the points and the first team is visibly pissed.

Episode is right here, moment starts at 21:37. The light did go on and the buzz-in noise sounded, but somehow it turned off and allowed the other team to buzz in instead. Even worse, that moment directly affects the outcome; the team that got screwed over loses by 20 points...the exact value of the question...to the team that got it instead. Really bad TV there.

It would appear that there was a brief discussion at the scorer's table, as Art started the next question before the lockout cleared, and the score updated a few seconds later. Probably a quick deliberation, but someone definitely had an itchy trigger finger on the reset.

Not sure of the rules, but since they counted the a subsequent answer Regis quickly corrected, that's technically a 40-point swing there. (I'll grant they were still probably frazzled by the mix-up.) The other question is whether the winning team hit their lockout before time expired, or if by rule they just finish out the last question no matter what.

It looks like Art had to accede to whatever the off-screen judges decided and didn't see any reason to acknowledge the losing team's anger.

When they say "Place $500,000 on Lucky Dan" and you misunderstand what Place means....

Millionaire: A woman during Meredith's run got extremely frazzled during the second tier set of questions, burning lifelines earlier than she clearly expected. Mid-stack, with only her ATA lifeline left, she makes a remark like"I don't know if I can trust this audience", to audible groans. She uses the lifeline, then right before locking in the most popular answer, demands that the audience writes apology letters if they're wrong. They are wrong, and she glumly walks offstage with her $1,000.

Get the Picture: Scores were close after Round 1, then the Orange team went on an absolute tear in Round 2, rendering the "Time's Up" puzzle reveal unnecessary. The Orange team gets the speed up puzzle, and while still on a shot of the contestant podiums, you can see one of the contestants on the Yellow team rolling his eyes and making a siren gesture with his hand, as if he's tired of that sound not being played in favor of his team.

Jeopardy: Arthur Chu messing up the pronunciation of Frances McDormand on a DD, then choosing to meticulously sound out syllables for the next couple of clues as if he were solving a puzzle on Wheel

There was a contestant on PYL who dropped f and s-bombs after whammying on his last spin.

Admittedly, he got hosed, having received the passed spin from the contestant in 3rd.
I always thought Jim Hess got a bad rap for swearing when, in all honesty, he had every right to do so considering that whole game. Came into R2 with three whammies, got rid of two of them, only to get screwed by two contestants who had it out for him for some reason.

Password All-Stars: Mike Evans stormed off the set after losing. He was too angry to hang around for the closing credits.

Now You See It '74: One contestant spent the vast majority of the round with her back to the game board because her partner was slow on the buzzer. When it came time to change places, she snatched her partner's chair before had a chance to get up.

The Weakest Link 2002: The episode with children contestants (a really stupid idea, IMHO) one young lady was not mentally prepared to lose. She was in tears before leaving her place on the set. Her walk of shame was cut away from quickly.

Understandably they're children, but a few of the losing contestants on the Young People's Weeks on Card Sharks were visibly upset they hadn't won.

If memory serves, the losing kids on Card Sharks still got very nice prizes anyway.

I also remember a lady contestant on LMAD 90 with Bob Hilton hosting. When she lost out on a trip to Paris, she could be seen visibly crying.

Not sure this counts as a sore loser moment, but there was a contestant on Scrabble that lost to the word DEVIL, and the consolation prize, a RED DEVIL vacuum! Chuck was quick to point out the coincidence and quipped that they seemed to be rubbing it in!

I remember a clearly ticked off contestant named Armando on "Pass The Buck" when after a member from his group hit the $5000 after there'd been six or seven failed tries, he was the odd one out in that he left without having once gotten a chance meaning he was the only one who walked away with zero accumulated money after all that time.    He'd been trying to be good-natured about his futility up to that point but when he was finally gone with nothing he was anxious to get off-stage without saying a word.

I think this proves nobody thinks they’ll lose in a stomping and it is difficult to be graceful after that sort of defeat.

It's one thing to have a crummy celebrity partner, but this could really blow. Besides this aspect, the partner round just didn't play well. The only good reason for it was to have more contestants for the cool staircase.
