I'm sure a couple of FB friends on the board are already over me pointing this out, but recall that Concentration and Whew were on the BUZZR survey a couple years ago, and brought out of the vault on Winc's channel first before ultimately debuting on BUZZR. I can only hope there's something to that considering there are also some nice studio master uploads of Scrabble and High Rollers too...which were also on the survey.
Anyhow, amazing news!

Wouldn't that be Wordplay, as brief as it was? They also briefly had 20 episodes of Strike it Rich on their Prime channel, but those disappeared too.

Wordplay had some ties as it was co-produced by Syd Vinnedge's company prior to it eventually becoming part of Fremantle in a series of mergers/acquisitions.

They also briefly had 20 episodes of Strike it Rich on their Prime channel, but those disappeared too.
Kind of a stretch here, but I do understand that the British format ("Strike It Lucky") was produced by Thames Television, which ultimately got absorbed into Fremantle. It might be possible that Kline and Friends sold the format (and maybe the tapes?) to Thames.

Wow! That's a hell of a rabbit that Buzzr pulled out of their hat, and they've pulled some pretty big ones in recent years with Concentration and MG/HS. Looks like Buzzr must be making enough money to get some outside acquisitions or leases.
Whew without commercials times out to about 18:30 or so. More than plenty enough for a 30 minute time slot with modern day commercial-loads. Hopefully no editing needed, other than ticket and contestant plugs.

This was my second thought as well, immediately following "Wait, what? Really?"
It is wild that we're getting something like this (complicated, flawed, yet deeply interesting) back on the air. The Variety article mentions Fremantle striking a deal with Winc. to air the show, since they hold the distribution rights. What are some other Sugarman productions that could potentially make it to Buzzr now that this agreement is in place?

Gotta say thank you to Wink and John Ricci for helping make this a reality! And thank you to Burt Sugarman for finally letting this show (and who knows what else???) come out of his vaults.
Hopefully, this show will be just as popular to the general public who watches Buzzr as it already is to us uber fans.
Looking forward to seeing that certain Detective face the Gauntlet (with all the Pomp & Circumstance, I might add) after an on-air injury weeks before on the show.
Looking forward to seeing the Randy Amasia shows "in the clear" without the NOT FOR BROADCAST bug on the screen.

Keep in mind that since MG/HS first started airing on Buzzr, most MGM properties were recently sold to Amazon. And considering that Amazon Prime is the home to many on-demand Buzzr shows already, there's a decent relationship between the two entities, so it may not be as difficult as we may think.

Speaking of Mike’s page, I’ve always been curious about one thing and I don’t really understand why it’s a curiosity. Is the URL supposed to read “U.S. game shows”, as in United States, or “us game shows”, as in “ain’t nobody here but us game shows, ain’t nobody here at all”?

Years ago I had a long conversation with Jim about this. He said he had one, count it, one Celebrity Sweepstakes episode in his collection. (I didn't ask whether it was the pilot, the final episode, or something else.) I think he was just as delighted as the rest of us when that syndicated episode popped up on YouTube a few years back. I have no reason to think anyone knows of an unseen cache, so barring discovering a pile of tapes in the backroom somewhere, it ain't happening.
(It took me a few minutes to realize this was not referring to Card Sharks.)

I don't have firsthand evidence, but I'm just going to put these questions out there
- Why would we keep presuming that the syndicated version of a lost network show was also wiped or lost?
- What reliable subject matter expert has ever validated the series being lost?
- Wouldn't it have been silly of them to allow the wiping of a series in which they also saw near-term syndication viability? A weekly version premiered a few short months after network
As wonderful as Jim is, I wouldn't consider the host an expert on the tape preservation status of a series. What confirmations have been provided by the David Schwartz's or other trusted artifact curators of our hobby that I may've missed?

IBefore the building burned down, there was a closet full of old Nielsen books, including one ratings book while Whew was on the air. I forgot what they aired in the timeslot Monday-Thirsday, (Wheel on NBC???) but according to Nielsen, they only aired Whew on Fridays.

WTKR (then-WTAR) in Norfolk didn't air Whew! or Monty's Beat the Clock. Come to think of it, I don't think they aired any of CBS's 10:00 hour shows until Card Sharks in '86.

One interesting part of the Vulture article (at least to me) was about how Winc. "had signed on to represent Jay Wolpert and producer Burt Sugarman and were trying to get them back in front of viewers". Heck of a chance encounter by the channel's GM, huh? Anyway, it makes one wonder if these Whew! reruns do well, you think we'll see other Jay Wolpert Production Shows in the future such as Blackout and Shopping Spree (assuming Winc. can gets their hands on the tapes, of course) or would these aforementioned titles be too obscure even for Buzzr?

when the folks in creative services/promotions has 1000% committed to their promotional strategy even when the new campaign mostly just makes people ask "WTF" and/or unintentionally offends people.

With a library of close wins from a variety of shows they air (Body Language, Super Password/Password +, Sweep, NYSI, Classic/Narz Concentration, etc.), I'm surprised they just didn't put together a supercut of some of those and have some someone exasperate a "Whew!" at the end.

I took JJ's idea and put it together with similar ideas I had. I did in half an hour (for free, mind you) what BUZZR couldn't do for more than free. Ta da. I don't usually do stuff like this but BUZZR's promos for Whew! have been bizarre and just downright bad, like nobody there had looked at its newest acquisition.

Nice promo.
You have 10 unique villains...Incorporate one or two of them in each promo and ditch Miss Muffett. They should be focusing on the Gauntlet of Villains in their promos.
It's like trying to promote Press Your Luck with no mention of the Whammy whatsoever.

Yep. The others were right down there with the "Tic Tac is Back" campaign, and at least some of those had some references to how you play tic-tac-toe.

Airing at 3:30 in Chicago, same time as Jeopardy. Now I get how some of the older folks here felt having to decide what to watch when two games ran opposite each other in the daytime.

The shows for Whew's launch marathon on September 5th are shows 1-2 & 4-7. Episode 3 is being skipped.

For its entire run, “Whew!” was preempted on the first Thursday of each month for CBS’ monthly “Magazine” (titled according to the month, e.g. “April Magazine,” “May Magazine,” etc.). Assuming no further preemptions during the early months, episode #78 should take us to 8-14-1979.
Aside from “Magazine” days, there’s another possible preemption on 10-3-1979 for news coverage of the papal visit to NYC. CBS’ games apparently didn’t air in NYC on that day (they’re not listed in the NYT), but I don’t know how the West Coast feed was handled.

This sounds pretty realistic. I always thought the 247 number was too low.
Too bad they're skipping so many episodes - I wonder if it's to line it more up with the calendar - so when Tom says celebrities will be playing starting Nov 5th, it'll be pretty close to that date when they get to them (?)

Do we have a list of the celebrities who played? I poked around some of the Wiki-type articles about the show and didn't see any. I count ~29 weeks of celebrity shows, give or take.
I am wondering if there is some subtraction to be done...perhaps some of the celebrities didn't clear their appearances? The only celeb shows I see on YouTube have Marcia Wallace, Gary Collins, Betty White, John Saxon, Mary Ann Mobley, and Robert Vaughn.
Also, that post-Thanksgiving week with no celebrities is interesting. Perhaps they saw a bump in ratings from November sweeps, and decided to make the format switch on very short notice.

Wink also posted 132-D with the same VTR date. Tom mentions that it's Halloween and to watch "tomorrow" for the CBS Magazine, and that they'll be back on Friday. 131-D most likely aired 10/30/79 instead of 10/31. Looks like it could be one off.

Kline & Moreno started 12/12, or 12/13? I am trying to match the airdate schedule with the celebrity list, but if they started on 12/12, then they were on for 6 episodes while Conn & Schuck were on for only 4 (because of the pre-emption on 12/6).
The only other discrepancies I have are:
Richard Kline & Betty White only have three episodes (3/26-28)
Roxie Roker & Dick Gautier have six episodes (5/7-9; 5/12-14)
Also, John Saxon & Betty White only have two episodes (5/29-30), but those were the last two episodes of the run.

I think the idea was to both show how the series began, and chronicle the journey of the first long-reigning champ Andrea.
Lost & Found will probably show how it ended with episode 8; episode 3 was skipped because one needed to be skipped to lead up to the cliffhanger episode 7.

Having seen very few episodes before now, I was surprised to see the amount of chargers getting to the top of the board and winning. I had thought that was somewhat of a rarity.. It will be interesting to see if that changes as they get later in the run.

I didn't think it was an official option in the game. With all the other miscues seen during the opening week and ˝ eps., (wrong SFX'S, wrong boxes turned, late turns,...) that it was another oopsie, but they kept it in since everything ended okay.

Frustrating, as I was looking forward to seeing this. Hopefully the channel will get their stream working so I can maybe see some of the daily episodes.

While I don't disagree with Adam's assessment, what positive gain is there by selecting 5-$20 in that situation, unless you know you earned $x80 or $x90, where that $20 equates to an extra second at the Gauntlet? If a contestant hits a block at level 6 while earning that extra Andrew Jackson, that player can't win the round. Risk vs. reward. And all that's not taking into consideration that 5-$20 could be a block...

Was it the rule that you could solve more than one blooper per level if desired? I wondered if she called "Level 5, 20" out of nerves, not realizing she already solved one blooper in the same level.

I wasn’t realizing that. Yeah, geoblocking could definitely be the issue. I imagine Roku Channel has similar geographical restrictions to Pluto. No idea about Distro, though; it might be worth a shot.

It was quite amazing how many production errors there were early on... they played the "Times Up!" sounder a time or two, complete with the win music after a longshot was called. And after one of the bonus rounds they started to play a different music cue. ISTR most of the shows BITD seemed to not want to edit unless the game play was affected, even if it makes things appear sloppy.

I noticed that too - it seemed to take a few shows to get some of the kinks worked out. I'd imagine this was a complicated show to produce. It must have been kind of a rush job getting that board reloaded after every round - and most of it went unrevealed. In looking at the slates posted on youtube, it appears they taped the first episode on 4/21 and the rest of the first week on 4/22. Strange that they'd only do one episode the first day - maybe they had a lot of production issues and it took a while figuring everything out.

I'm in the Toronto area and I've been able to stream the site before, but that was a few months ago. Now, whenever I try to go the site it just spins and spins and says the site can't be reached. Strange that they'd even block the site from loading. Even if streams don't work, the sites always load. Something must have changed on their end.
None of those other links work. Is it still possible to setup some sort of proxy server? I'm not a big tech guy - unless it's intuitive I usually struggle figuring these things out.
There is a digital channel in Buffalo (about 60 miles away as the crow flies) that carries BUZZR, but it's a weak station and I think I'm just outside of their range.
Just out of curiosity, since I can't even load their site, does anyone have an e-mail contact address for them - maybe I could inquire?
I guess I'll have to hope that some of these episodes will find their way online (thanks Jamie for the earlier post - it worked fine).

The "contact us" e-mail address on their web site is askbuzzr@buzzrtv.com although since you are having issues reaching the site, I don't know if that will work for you. Their e-mail newsletter comes from askbuzzr@buzzrplay.com although I suspects that one forwards to the other.

I've used ExpressVPN, and whenever I'm connected to another country the BUZZR stream fails. Perhaps the inverse would work for you, Ian. If you're up to using a VPN, give it a shot and connect to one based in the US.

I got error messages yesterday too, and I'm not in Canada. All three browsers had the message "The media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported." (I watched it on Pluto TV.) Today I cleared my cache, and two of the three browsers now work--although I'm still getting the same message on Firefox, my primary browser. Strange.

Yesterday, some friends and I were discussing that. As we watched the mini-marathon, we figured out that there were actually two game boards. On one board, the backlit 3 on level three was installed upside down and backward; on the other board, it's installed correctly. During the first week, there was also a different bulb out along the right side of each board's chase lights.

Ian, I would recommend trying out Channels DVR software if you have a spare PC available. It is a homebrew DVR that costs a few dollars a month, but it can easily give you DVR capabilities for Buzzr once set up.

You can set up Channels to pull in feeds from a free Sling TV subscription. I would imagine you’d need a VPN; I use NordVPN for my DVR setup and it works well. I have used the Sling TV feed of Buzzr to DVR a bunch of Buzzr recently, including Whew!.

Nice to see this other than the eps that have been floating around- didn't air in DC (neither did TPIR at the time) and our Baltimore reception was iffy at times so never saw it this clear before...
And interesting to see according to the ep that aired today the Gauntlet was only won about 1 in every 6 tries- with the length and pace of the bloopers in that round, looks like you needed to get 10 out of 12-14 depending on how much extra time you had..

I don't remember it either (keep in mind I wouldn't have seen any episodes in the first eight weeks or so, except possibly on Memorial Day). Then again, I also "remember" that the "long shot block" was brown instead of red.

Digging deep into archive.org, we find from Randy Amasia's rules release:
When charging, I may not proceed to the next level until I have correctly answered at least one blooper on that level
So, yes, you were allowed to select again from the same level. Or to be more accurate, it's another way to penalize a charger that's not paying attention.
Edit: listen to Tom Kennedy's tone right before she went to the next level. This was planned for.

Has BUZZR been doing this with any other shows lately? In what I've seen of the network (from a trip to Florida in early 2020), plus episodes I've traded for, they've left all the "stay tuned for..." plugs in. Are they editing them out of shows like Match Game now too, or just Whew!?

This show went back and forth with 3 directors over the course of its run; first it was Bill Carruthers, them Tom Trbovich, and later Chris Darley (who also directed "Second Chance"). I'm guessing the SFX came and went with them.

After Rod says, "This is Rod Roddy speaking", if you listen very carefully...you can hear a little bit of Rod saying "Stay" before they quickly fade it out.

I played it several times, and I'm pretty sure the charger, Annie, answers a blooper on the top level with "wedding ring" just starting her answer before the buzz-buzz for time. The correct answer was "rings." Did they bring her back? Or are my old ears mishearing this?
When they came back from commercial, Tom said that she had indeed answered the blooper but not within the two second time limit.

That has been the policy that promos for other shows that the station is not going to carry has to be covered up. Promos or voiceovers. Don't know if that is still the case.

I've seen a couple of these now, and you can definitely hear the jump in the music. I don't notice any jump in the video though...so it appears that they're editing the audio track and must be fading the video a few seconds early so the audio and video fade together.

They did. Not sure what the episode numbers were, but since Alan Emrich's episodes have been in the trade circuit for a while, we figured out the airdates as July 30 - Aug 6, 1979. The episodes being aired now came a week or so after that.

Listening to today's rerun with a pair of headphones, I hate to disappoint the nostalgia lovers out there, but BUZZR indeed cut out Rod's "Stay tuned for 'The Price Is Right'..." plug at the end.
I understand why Buzzr has to cut out addresses and phone numbers, but this extra expense still baffles me. Are there Buzzr viewers who get upset when they don't receive the episode of Tattletales that Johnny Olson from 1976 promised them? Is there some issue with the phrase "these CBS stations," even though there are plenty of references within assorted shows to being on CBS or NBC? I don't understand why they're expending the effort to make these edits.
Maybe since Buzzr is officially a broadcast network, there's some legalese behind that (but no word on why the plugs from the first 5 Whew episodes or the other shows' plugs weren't cut).
Seems they're lax about this sort of thing when they have a mini-marathon of the premiere week of new shows. MG/HS's first week of episodes = the only ones to keep the entire fee plugs mid-show and end-show.
/And that threw off the timing of show/ad break whenever they aired.

Since she did not utter "Level 6...", it sounds like an action that is similar what we discussed earlier -- you can stay on a level after correctly solving a blooper. So once you call the next level, you cannot go back.

For all the production sloppiness we saw in the first week and miscues, they were making up for it on this episode.
Looked like there was a near seamless edit during Annie's run on the Fun & Games board. If you notice closely, around 24:15, looks like they took "Gossip" as an alternative answer to "Telephone" after a likely stopdown and so they picked up the round from there, starting with the bell clang.

Unless I heard wrong, on the episode broadcast 9/15, in the Gauntlet of Villains, one of the bloopers said that Father's Day was "the second Sunday in June." Had it said "third Sunday in June," there's a chance the contestant would have gotten it right, and almost certainly would have won the $25,000.

The NYT gave details as to network coverage of the pope's visit to NYC in the following article, which helps to clear up what was pre-empted at the network level:

So for the CBS games on the Eastern/Central feed, "Beat the Clock" aired as normal, approximately half of "Whew!" was pre-empted, and (per the FAQ at golden-road.net) a half-hour rerun of TPIR from 1977 was used to fill that slot.
For the "Whew!" episode guide, the celebrity episodes indeed start at #134 on 11-5-1979. All airdates and non-airdates (due to "Magazine" or holiday programming) should now be resolved at least until March 1980, when we have the anomalous Betty White/Richard Kline week that TV Guide only listed for three episodes. Time will tell whether it was a shorter week or the listings were wrong...

I'm assuming this is because this episode was meant to air yesterday so the timing is gonna be off since these break times were meant for a different episode? I say that, since at the start of the show Tom mentions that they've given away over $75,000 in the last four shows, and right before that day's Gauntlet Tom expands on that by saying if Gwendoline won, it'd be the fourth win in five attempts, and in Randy's recollections he mentions that there were three other $25,000 winners besides him on his second tape day. So, since we know Randy's second show was A-88D, counting four shows forward would get us to A-92D. Which means the commercial alignments should go back to normal by Monday, if they air A-89D tomorrow, A-90D on Thursday, etc.

I don’t know what show aired Monday. Tuesday was Randy’s show, and today was The Show After Randy’s Show.
Commercial breaks still messed up on Wednesday as they were on Monday and Tuesday, but the show did air completely (minus two seconds), just with the breaks in the wrong spot.
I have a hypothesis that the Monday breaks were timed to Randy’s show, and so on.

I comment here because QCing material and running on-air stations is my line of work.
Wherever their MC operation is, I don't know what process they use to QC material but there is a major failure in whatever process they have to have this happen day after day.
All I know is that if this were to continually happen in my facility, questions would be raised and the problem would be fixed after the FIRST time it happened, let alone the third.
This is abysmal.

Did some looking, of the episodes that have been shown on buzzr there have been 4 wins. Anne did it in 49 seconds. The next fastest was Ken from episode 2. He did it in 50 seconds. Randy did it in 60 seconds.

One other thing on the ep aired yesterday:
I think there was a judge's call edit on the 3rd round board- On the blooper "A girl who sleeps with a piece of wedding cake will dream of ants.". The contestant said a bridegroom, and then the clock cut away for a second or two and from the gestures of Tom and the contestant it looked like they stopped, conferred (looks like the answer they were looking for was "their future husband") and determined they could take the answer and restarted the round from the bell.

In episode 132, Tom references being preempted "tomorrow" for Magazine, and also mentions today being Halloween.
The only way I can see to resolve this would be if 113 aired October 3, but only on the West Coast, or if it was skipped.

I detected an edit while the champion was at villain #2 in today's bonus round. I wasn't watching closely enough to see whether the clock jumped (meaning it was a Buzzr edit) or whether it was an original 1979 edit. Did anybody see specifically what occurred?

Between episodes 92 and 93, the Gauntlet of Villains was fine-tuned. Their numbers now appear as speech bubbles, as opposed to being on the arm.

The theme was a piece of stock library music from KPM by Richard Davies called "L.A. Express." Another piece by Davies called "The Big Event" was also used as cue music.

1) I would assume it was easier to total the non winning end game money with the new numbering system.

Question: Was this the same Larry Rice who was a regular guest on Wally George's show "Hot Seat" in the 80s and 90s on KDOC-56 in Orange County, CA?

A-100 D was an insane episode. Robin Edison was one of the strongest players this game has seen since Randy Amasia and before Steve Leblang. In her first round of charging, she plays unconventionally by taking middle path up the board and hits only one block on the way; but her charging in the tiebreaker is where she really shined.
Were the waiting contestants in the green room able to see the tapings in progress? If they were, she had to have been watching all of John's other games to know he would most certainly employ the "dragnet" approach on the blocks that once she got around them, she knew she could simply take the easy path up the board. She never said dollars in all her charges because she knows it saves her precious seconds, and it worked big time. Despite hitting two blocks between the first two levels, she gets to Level 6 with 12 seconds on the clock and goes straight for the $500, but it's blocked. Dashes to the $200 once she's free and wins on the "times up" call.
That, and you see how she tenses up the moment the blooper is revealed and is looking straight at the punchline, and she's monitoring the clock between calls to know how much time she has. Absolutely stellar game.
And I didn't even mention how the charger won all three rounds played, no Longshots were called and the Gauntlet was done in 61 seconds that it left a whole two minutes to fill with banter in act 5 before the credit roll. That's living up to your name of Whew!, all right.
I really hope the tape issues on the next episode are resolved at some point because I really want to see what happened next after an episode that good!

If that is true, that proved to be a significant advantage for several challengers we've seen so far. Between the ability to watch the champion's game play, and the ability to pick the categories for the first two rounds, the Challenger definitely entered with an advantage.

I seem to recall Blockbusters taking an audience shot one time and showed potential contestants with name tags sitting in the audience. I also remember Bert Convy making a reference to the contestants sitting in the audience a few times as well during Super Password.
Out of the several show tapings I have been to over the decades, I can only remember Super Password having their "contestant pool" seated in the first one or two rows in the audience, and seeing somebody select the next contestant(s) right before they were called into the game.
I want to say that was the case for John Davidson's Hollywood Squares as well (which was shot just across the hall at the time at NBC), but I'm not 100% sure.

From everything I've read, it seems like Jeopardy! sat its contestants in the audience pre-2020 -- did Wheel do the same?
Letting future contestants sit in the audience is not a common practice in this day and age -- I assume because it's easier to monitor everybody when they're in the same controlled space like a green room. I don't know whether there's usually a studio feed being pumped into the green room or whether the goal is to keep the contestants well and truly isolated from the game.
Social distancing regulations have done away with shared contestant waiting areas for the time being, but I'd be curious to hear anecdotes from people who were contestants on shows in the 2010s. Were you allowed to watch the taping while you waited? I'd also be interested in learning whether there's a difference in practices between shows that take two or three hours to tape an episode versus shows that try to progress closer to real time.

I was a contestant on the short-lived Mall Masters at Mall of America GSN original, taped in the fall of 2000. While it may have had to do with the show being pretty low-budget and not shot in a traditional TV studio, the future contestants were the audience and sat just behind the cameras watching episodes being taped. Since there were only a dozen or so of us, the majority of the audience sounds heard on the show were added in post-production.
Since there were no returning champions, the only benefit we got out of seeing other episodes tape while we waited for our turn was to get a better idea of the structure of the show.

I guess what I'm getting at is that there was a significant advantage to W! contestants being able to watch from a green room, because so much of the format was about strategy. Even one extra block gained from knowledge about a contestant's charging pattern could swing the game.
To an extent, this would also be an advantage on J!, but only to the extent of plotting strategy against a champion with odd habits, like category jumping and the like.
For shows like Password and others, I don't see as much of an advantage.

Two things:
1. Just to clarify - unless I'm mistaken, J! tournament participants in a quarterfinal day of taping are in the green room until they tape with no feed/link to the other episodes. This would make going later in the week a huge advantage.
2. Which makes Wheel's Friday Finals season (96-97) and other self contained weeks similar to it a bit bonkers then. I was on in May of 97 and was randomly selected to be in the yellow position on the Thursday episode. As such, not only did we get to watch the Mon/Tues/Wed episodes tape and thus I knew what I had to beat to make it to the Friday show but the total to shoot for was announced by Pat on the show itself. This always felt a bit off for me but I was lucky enough that I could 100% take advantage of it, make enough, and enjoyed being one of the last people to be a "returning champion" on Wheel. (Side note: I'm a full believer that yellow was always the best position for you to play from in the pre-toss up era of Wheel - if you're red and you lose your turn early, you might not get it back until round four for example. Yellow, on the other hand, can run the table in rounds one and two).
In regards to other shows - nothing else that I've done gave an advantage by watching from the audience/from the feeds but most would seat contestants in the audience. The only ones that tended not to were those that were taped on a very small set and audiences really didn't have the setup/the space.

Correct. If you were able to see the shows as they were taping, you'd have that advantage. Thus a wise move in sequestering them, to not slant the Thursday and Friday shows.

Back in the 80's and I assume the 90's, Wheel of Fortune Teen Week allowed all the week's contestants to sit in the audience, whether or not they played yet. I was on the Monday show and didn't think it was fair that the others knew the top scores for the week to try to get into the Friday final.

It was indeed, on a stage inside a small playhouse theater in then-Knott's Camp Snoopy (now Nickelodeon Universe), the amusement park in the middle of the mall.

Yes, it's happened a couple of times. The show rules do address this as well and that is what happens.

On one board, the backlit 3 on level three was installed upside down and backward; on the other board, it's installed correctly. During the first week, there was also a different bulb out along the right side of each board's chase lights.
It appears that sometime along the way, they figured out how to play the game on just one board. Because the same light bulb has been out on the right side of level 5 for weeks now, and I'm assuming that one random bulb wasn't out in the same location on both boards.

One of the episodes seen within the last week had two Frank (without his little friend Stein) blocks next to each other on level 1 (the $20 & $30, IIRC). And I have seen other episodes where there were duplicate Gauntlet character blocks on the same board. So it does happen regularly.

I built a PowerPoint game controller that does the opposite: the blooper is overlaid on top of the villain. With 7 villains, each one appears exactly 4 times.

The villains are preloaded in their positions as shown above and when the block is placed, the blooper gets removed from behind the "money" slide, leaving the villain to be revealed if that amount is called for. I also made Longshot blocks for each of the villains and have it so that each of the villains on the top row is replaced by a different villain holding the Longshot.
On the real show? They probably didn't care enough about that level of detail. Mathematically there shouldn't be any reason to see duplicate villains in any one round if you're just placing the 6 blocks over top of the bloopers.

A theory, based on no evidence other than what's been said in this thread: They started out with exactly one of each card for each board with the intent of only using each villain once per board, but it was faster or more efficient to have more than six cards ready behind the board when blocks were being placed so they combined the two sets into one, and the only system for what went where was what happened to come to hand first.

Is it any coincidence that celebrities were added about a month later? It was probably somewhere around now in the taping cycle that someone at CBS said that they've got to spruce it up somehow and the producers had to figure out how to incorporate celebrities.

Yes. I'm assuming that Whew!'s ratings were always trouble (as has been mentioned before, one of the show's biggest problems was an overwhelming format that required too much concentration to keep up with). I'm also assuming that the ratings didn't drop suddenly and significantly because of a string of Gauntlet losses, which a viewer would only notice if they watched the show every day.
Friday's episode was the start of a new taping day. They finally fixed that light bulb, there was a new split-screen shot the director was trying out, the list of writers in the credits got much longer (I wasn't able to compare the names, but it looked like the researchers may have received a promotion?), and the questions in the bonus round went from "the contestants have no hope of winning" to "there's at least a small chance a contestant could get close to a win."

They’re at about 6 weeks after NBC moved Hollywood Squares to the time slot- From what I read, Whew did decently against All Star Secrets but once Squares moved the ratings dipped, so Whew went the celeb route (and considering Squares got canned 3 weeks after Whew was to make way for The David Letterman Show, you wonder what the ratings were overall; there might have been clearance issues with affiliates wanting to do local talk shows and such- I know DC didn’t broadcast Whew. CBS did sitcom reruns in the 10am hour after Whew ended until $25k Pyramid/Child’s Play started in late ‘82)

Comparing the credits from ep. 79 and ep. 113, a slew of new people were added as writers, 2 speech bubbles worth, 8 in total--Joel Hecht, Laurie Levit-Ades, Jim Kahlert, and Jerrilyn Klein (all 4 researchers on show 79) got promoted to writers. Two new writers were added to the staff--Jeff Spielberg and Jill Baer.

Much appreciated, but the point is that NextDVR needs a JSON feed so I can make a streaming channel source simulate a regular TV channel for the purpose of adding it to the program grid, so that I can recording it like any other DVR recording. That's where Schedules Direct comes in. (So basically where my cable system doesn't have a channel 686, I stuck the BUZZR feed there.)

On a similar note, can anybody who's worked on the production side of the house on a show such as this explain why Rod literally shouted every line of copy he had? I'm assuming he was stationed in the usual spot at stage left for announcers in Studio 33. Was the crowd really that wild that he couldn't hear himself through his headset, or is there another plausible explanation aside from, "It's Rod Roddy"? I know Rod's game show repertoire through the '80s is typified by his overly-enthusiastic delivery, but he's just so over the top on Whew! that it's grating on the ears.

I'll also add that he was doing Soap at the same time, which required a more subdued delivery. I imagine he was still finding the balance between the two. He toned it down by the time So You Think You Got Troubles or Hit Man premiered.

Except he was still way over-the-top at the end of the '80s until heath issues forced him to be more subdued. Not to speak ill of Rod as I have many fond memories of him in my years watching Price, but in retrospect, I really don't understand how he was left so unrestrained in his delivery and especially on Whew!. You'd think he would have been told to tone it down.

Bill Carruthers had Rod record all of his fee plug reads in advance on PYL and he was much more subdued, likely because he had worked with him before on Whew!.

Perhaps the direction given to Rod was to not be subdued, owing to the fact that the shows were titled Whew! and Pandemonium.
Maybe it was something with the reverb that strident worked better than mellifluous.

All I remember is that when Stephen came back to face the Gauntlet there was no mention of him before his segment on the episode. So when it happens, it will likely be after another contestant's Gauntlet win or unsuccessful 5th try.

No. It still straddled until late in the run. As soon as they knew they were cancelled, they put that rule in to make sure they ended with a complete game and gauntlet attempt. I'd say probably about four weeks from the end.

Was that Greg Itzin (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0411857/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1), the actor who played President Logan on "24" and multiple roles on various Star Trek series? The IMDB bio seems to align nicely, but I can't convince myself it's the same guy.

Based on Buzzr's airing history, I'd be surprised if it didn't go back to 78. This was about 50 episodes, right? That's within their normal "new-to-Buzzr" episode range.

So #117 was NOT aired? I wonder if it was because Stephen (and/or Tom) mentioned what his Private Eye "nickname" was. Let's just say nowadays, if whoever said it did it in a taping today, it definitely would have been edited out.
It makes sense, as they never uttered his nickname in eps #118 & 119.
With all that being said,, there IS a chance that we may never see his triumphant return to the show beginning with his belated Gauntlet run if his nickname was mentioned again in that yet to air episode.
I only remember being at home seeing only 2 of his episodes first run 40- some years ago -- the days he messed up his knee and when Stephen returned for his 3rd run of the Gauntlet. Hopefully they will air that episode(s), and MUTE any reference(s) to his nickname, if there were any.

Can't recall the source, but I've heard that two PYL contestants (not necessarily same show, but in the green room on the same taping day) hit it off, got hitched, and then (can't recall if it was the husband or wife) one of them was a contestant on Eubanks CS, with their spouse in the audience cheering them on. I believe their names were Perri and Mando.

On Thursday's episode, it's the first time that I recall seeing a blocker take a vertical strategy and block the same dollar amount on all five levels. And he had success, too.
I think another blocking strategy that might have been successful would have been to alternate between $10 and $20 on each level, if you thought the contestant was going to go low.

This doesn't totally answer your question, but I recall an episode of Classic Concentration on Buzzr; the contestants' names were Ross and Leslie. Alex starts the show by explaining that they've both been in the contestant pool for the last three tapings, the staff picked up on the fact that they seemed to be really hitting it off during the previous tapings, and Alex just totally outed them and revealed that they were a couple by the time they finally got a chance to play against each other. Cute moment. I'd love to think things worked out for them.

Whew is a game that punishes lapses in concentration, moreso than any game other than Concentration. If you reveal a block, use that time to get centered and be ready to come out with your next choice as soon as Tom says "Charge!" During the Gauntlet of Villains, treat each event as a chance to win another $100 and move a step forward. Too many players miss one and it throws them off their stroke and you get folks winning $400. For goodness sake, don't take five seconds of dead air so much so that Tom asks "Do you want to try another one on that level?"
Yes, the longshot tilts things in favor of the blocker. Yes, charging is an exercise in doublethink and randomness. It's still a game that when it plays well looks fantastic on TV, such as when the hyperkinetic Steven Leblang tore through the material.
That said I can see how it is not everybody's cup of tea.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure the contestant got confused because she gave what she thought was the right answer (I think the blooper was "Leaning {wrong word} Pisa" and she said "Tower" instead of "Tower of") and wondered why she was still on the same level.

Yes, it was one of those cases where the blooper wasn't really well written. They might as well have made "Tower of Pisa" the entire part replaced if they weren't going to do just "Tower". I get they're not doing this to trip up contestants, but it kind of has that unintended effect.
I have also learned in watching this series the importance of your game show having a good timing director. For a show that has been described around here in the past as being a "20-minute news gap filler" (and the pacing shows just how much window dressing has been put on, ultimately, a five-minute game), it disappoints me how in some shows Tom has to fill a minute(s) by getting down the list to questions such as, "How many grandchildren do you have?" and in others we're so short on time we get Rod saying, "This is Rod Roddy speaking. Whew! is a production of the Bud Austin Company. StaytunedforThePriceIsRightfollowingthenewsovermostoftheseCBS--".

Yeah, it surprises me how alarmingly bad they were at timing out the show sometimes.
And really, when you think about it, compared to other game shows where you can be caught in a hard place of "do we have time to squeeze in another round?" instead of two minutes of banter before the credits (e.g., Password Plus, Card Sharks, Chain Reaction), Whew! should have been a cinch for timing. It was a timed game and was always a combination of three front rounds and a bonus round or two front rounds and two bonus rounds. If there's no longshot call, you know that means you've wrapped up about 30 seconds early. Stick a couple of added pieces of banter in before the bonus walk, and you should be all timed up by the end of the show, even if you still defer to the long roll.
/An especially enjoyable long roll with cool wide-angle shots against a cool closing theme.

This means Randy's first show should rerun on the 10th of December, and his win should air on the 13th. By weird coincidence, in between on the 12th is the 20th anniversary of his passing. The 16th should be episode 92, a great episode which BUZZR mangled in its first airing.

Here's an experiment that might be worth trying, that just occurred to me now as I'm processing these last few shows of this run...
So I think a lot of you know that since Comcast Seattle doesn't carry BUZZR natively, I'm recording these via some wizardry in NextPVR that basically lets me turn the streaming feed into Just Another Tunable Channel, and in order to integrate it into my guide I need to find a nice quiet channel number that Comcast isn't using (easy enough - can even be one I simply don't care about :D) and then a Pacific-time feed of guide data that I can point NextPVR to so it knows how to populate the guide listings.
With a Schedules Direct subscription, there are plenty of options for the latter, and right now I'm pulling from Charter Spectrum out of LA. Thing is, the data for individual shows isn't spectacular; for example, it's been numbering the Whew! run as S01E01...S01E61, and then when I process them I have to rename them with the proper episode numbers.
So my question is: do we have anyone here who gets BUZZR through their cable system (do the DirectTVs and DISHs even carry it? If so I suppose they would qualify too, I think I can access those data feeds as well) on the West Coast who is getting good guide data with correct season and episode information? I think I got it ONCE at some point in a recording so I think BUZZR does provide it to some carriers. If so, where are you and who's your carrier so I can try pulling from that one and see if it's a quality of data thing or a NextPVR parsing thing? Thanks!

I get it through Xfinity - it's not directly from BUZZR, but from the local Fox affiliate that broadcasts it. It's Comcast Vallejo, CA channel 169. Note that some guide data distinguish the episodes correctly, while others (e.g. TiVo) do not.

My guess is they'll get through them a couple more times before getting new ones, but it's really anybody's guess. Some shows have gone a year or more without new episodes and then new ones pop up out of the blue. Other shows get new episodes regularly every few months.
I also have a slight hunch we might see a week of celebrity shows during this year's Betty White Christmas, but the schedule for that isn't out yet so I don't know for sure.

DirecTV doesn't carry it on the national satellite-delivered lineup, but I have their "Local Channel Connector" add-on that integrates OTA channels into the on-screen guide. Looks like their source has decent data for some Buzzr shows ("Super Password," for example, has celebrities and original air dates listed)... but "Whew!" is not one of those.

Since it has been reported that Whew! has been a big hit for BUZZR, one would guess they'd want to get fresh shows out there ASAP. ISTR Concentration's original batch of 30 shows was repeated once before fresher shows aired.

The official schedule is out, now showing no skips, except for the previously-skipped 101, from today through the end of 2021.

My best guess is that the network swapped the Betty White/Richard Kline three-day run into the Wed 3/19-Fri 3/21 slot, and moved the Carolyn Jones/Michael Young five-day run into the full week from Mon 3/24-Fri 3/28, and that TV Guide didn't get the memo. Without a time machine or the adjoining episodes, we won't know for sure.

A reminder that 92 was one of the episodes where the commercial breaks were mistimed the first time it aired on BUZZR, for those people wanting (hopefully) a flawless version. It's also a great episode.

I have a BUZZR streaming question.
I've noticed the past month or so that their website is accessible in Canada again, but when I try to watch live, I'm getting an error that states
"the media could not be loaded, either because the server or network failed or because the format is not supported".
I was in Florida last week spending time with my parents at their condo. They have BUZZR on their cable system, but just for fun I also tried the website on their computer, which they leave there year-round. It's getting the same error message in Florida that it is here. It worked fine on PlutoTV in Florida but not BUZZR's own website.
Since this doesn't seem to be a "north of the border" problem, is everyone experiencing this? It seems kind of odd they'd let that error be there for so long.

How I'm able to do it, is by extracting the m3u8 link from the source code of the page (PM me if you want the link), and then paste that link into the "Open Network Stream" feature of VLC Media Player (that's also how I record the stream as well).

I have an old PC running Channels DVR (https://getchannels.com/dvr-server/) server, which records a Buzzr stream that is authenticated via a free Sling TV account.
It works flawlessly, but is not totally free. Channels DVR costs $8/month, but brings with it a very nice program guide and lots of other features. I do have my home antenna and some other sources that feed into Channels, so it's not all for Buzzr...but Buzzr was my primary driver in figuring out a solution like this.
I do know that Channels works with Canadian sources, and you can easily plug in many different sources, so it may work for you if you have an old computer lying around that can run it.

If there was one show that didn't need celebrities, it was Whew! The celebrities add next to nothing. They just take away time from the contestants.
I just watched the last non-celebrity week. It's interesting how there is no mention of the celebrities coming back and being permanent. Also interesting how it just happened to end on a Gauntlet win. (There were 3 wins that week!) There were some really quirky contestants, like Glenn (I wonder what he sold) and Phyllis, with her inadvertent blooper that no one has scored on her yet (her hobby was being a goalie on a soccer team). Quirky contestants are one of the charms of Whew! Having celebrities dilutes that.

Also, anybody with Xfinity that saved the early episodes might want to check their "scheduled recordings" to make sure you are getting them; for some reason, the listings say that they went back to episode 3 as of 3/28, and a scheduled recording won't record an episode it thinks is already there.

That's the $64,000 question. (Not The $64,000 Question.) My guess is that either TV Guide erred or a change was made at production level. We will find out when those two weeks air in regular rotation.

This would have bumped Jack Carter and Meredith MacRae's last two episodes (#250-251) to 4/28-4/29, and Robert Mandan and Joan Prather's week (#253-256) forward by a day to 4/30, 5/2, 5/3-5/7 (with intervening Magazine and weekend), making Roxie Roker and Dick Gautier's week (#257-261) a 5-episode week from 5/8-5/9 and 5/12-5/14 (with an intervening weekend).
A bump would explain why TV Guide lists six episodes for Roker/Gautier. The schedule change would have reached Radnor before the 5/10 issue went to press.
We'll find out for sure when these episodes air.

I looked at the index of the Vanderbilt TV News Archive and they don't show times the reports aired, but they do have listings for 3 hours and 10 minutes of "Friday Morning" coverage. ("CBS Morning News" still had a one-hour slot before "Captain Kangaroo".) If I were a betting man I would say "Whew!" was pre-empted nationally and the episode bumped to the next day.

I guess people complaining about the muting out made them decide to not bother with airing the whole episode. Kind of like how we didn't want credit crunches (they asked), so they cut out fee plugs instead.

I can confirm they have done this in the past. I have a good chunk of the Body Language skips, and in one of them a contestant simply guessed "midget" when the word being acted out was "elves". It was super easy to mute it out, and they skipped it anyway.
I hate to think that that's the reason for the Whew skips when they can and have simply muted the offending word in the past, but unfortunately there is some evidence this is the case here.

Nor do we know that if it is the skipped episode, what is the reason for not airing it ‐‐ it could be a damaged or missing tape,...
One thing that COULD be an advantage to us if Stephen's return episode(s) will not air on Buzzr ‐‐ for whatever reason(s) ‐‐ since the Whew! library more or less came via Winc and their connections, what's to say it could show up in a future edition of Wink's Vault???
Then, the game show fanatics can see it au natural on a website while the Buzzr folk who think it is too controversial to the general public will never see it over the air.

It didn't seem to happen as often in the civilians‐only episodes. But then again, viewers (and contestants) were still trying to wrap their brains around the format and rules.

Well the celebrity episodes I find have more easy bloopers, even the further to the right you get on the board. I've seen some tougher questions though now that we're all-celebrity, so perhaps the writers decided to reinstate a balance once they got used to the new format?

Well, after nearly 42 years (damn, I'm old), I finally get to see Stephen's return again. So my memory was indeed a bit fuzzy (I thought his return was later in an episode, not in the first segment), but I did remember the "Pomp and Circumstance" that Uncle Jay assembled for his return.
I won't spoil anything else for those who have yet to see it, but it definitely was a keeper of an episode.

I appreciate that they had Stephen run the Gauntlet solo, and from his funny comments to that close victory (has anyone else picked Tom up after a Gauntlet win?) it's a gem of a segment.
Heck, I'd say it's further proof that adding celebs to the game wasn't a great idea.

Another observation: dunno if it's the audio on the YT capture, but this is pretty much the clearest I've heard the Gauntlet music. Very little talk/audience applause in the mix, and seems like the music's volume is turned up.

Something that seemed to stick out on the 5/4 episode: they had two new contestants, but the male contestant was paired with the female celebrity. Maybe I was just imagining things, but when they have two new contestants, isn't it usually men against women?

The way I see it, all good things have to come to an end at some point. That and I'm figuring they need to save something "strong" for the fall, and Whew! would seem to fit the bill. There's a little over 13 weeks left to get to the finale, plus everything between #7 and #78, so they should be able to get at least two more batches out of it before the whole series is exhausted.

There was construction going on outside my residence, so I couldn't hear clearly, but did they accept "Madame Bouvier" for "Madame Bovary" in the episode Buzzr aired on May 5? If so, I assume that was the reason.
