WOF has started tapings for its 35th season, and as usual, we have changes to the show. Among them, according to sources who attended the tapings:
- The eggcrate scoreboard displays are back (virtual this time).
- Decade categories (e.g., "The 80s") are returning.
- Free Spin is back, as well (no more Free Play)
- A new category: "What Are You Wearing"?
- $5K Every Day is gone. Instead, if someone lands the $10K in the Mystery Round, and wins the round, a Wheel Watcher at-home wins $10K.
- Now that relations between the US and Cuba have improved, trips to Cuba are being offered.
However, probably the biggest change comes in the bonus round. After the main game, the winning contestant(s) get(s) to select the category before the commercial break. This means that categories like Title (or a subset), Proper Name or Character - which have not been used as BR categories in years (Character was still Fictional Character when it last appeared as a BR in 2008) - can be used.

The items quoted are fake news.
Although they did use both of those recently (see here (https://www.instagram.com/p/BYQgOxFjeX3/)), it was for taping other TV shows using the set and those changes have not carried over into the main game.

So they're using the bonus game from "Wheel 2000" now?

I think the only difference between Wheel 2000's bonus and WOF's was that the kids only had two bonus prizes to pick from.

If you had today as the day that someone said "I wish Brian Henke was right", you win the pool, because I do wish he was right with some of what he said (eggcrates, primarily).
What other shows are using the set?

Honestly, I'm a little surprised that more game shows don't emulate the old-school totes with the monitors. GSN's Pyramid and TPiR are the only shows I can think of that have done so. Otherwise, it's usually one of the standard Microsoft fonts, like Impact, Arial, or Times New Roman.
But of course, I doubt anyone outside of We Geeks is going to turn to Judge Judy because the fancy monitors didn't replicate the eggcrates or vanes from 1986. :P

Is the minimum amount in the bonus round now $35k?

I'd imagine so.

What I prefer most about the eggcrate displays compared to what they're using now is the black background and larger font makes the numbers stand out more. Not that the current displays are unreadable or anything but the scores just look kind of dinky to me. Even five-digit totals have a ton of unused space on either side.

It would look so cool if they used an outer glow effect on the Eggcrate font, so it would look something like this:

So was Brian just guessing/editorializing? Why would he guess rather than telling us his source?
-

Haven't the Obama-era relaxations of travel to Cuba been rescinded under the current administration?

I could be wrong, but I believe that's one thing that's still in place. For now.

That's the problem I have with simulating eggcrate and vane displays on computer screens. They often look very fake.

The pedant in me would say that it's because they don't attempt to actually simulate the displays. They just use an eggcrate-like/vane-like font when rendering text and those, particularly the vane-like fonts, don't actually match the way an actual display of that type would look. (That said, The Price Is Right has done a darn good job with the one-bid displays and the Any Number board of recreating the shapes and positioning of the old displays.)
At a minimum, you'd think someone would have attempted a simulated eggcrate display that does a little bit more to simulate the haloing effects and color temperature of an incandescent bulb than anything I've seen. You only really need to draw one bulb and repeat it as necessary.
-
I'm watching tonight's ep, and Free Play and the normal displays (no eggcrates) are there.

Heck, I am a person of negligible artistic ability, and I can do that in Powerpoint.

As far as I could tell the winner did not choose her category for the bonus puzzle.
/category is What Are You Doing?
//Not winning the bonus money, apparently.

Am I missing a joke? She was in fact presented with three options before the break and selected that one.

She was? Whoops. I shall go back and rewatch then.
/that's how you own up to a mistake, Brian.
//that's odd; why not have it just after she spins the wheel?

//that's odd; why not have it just after she spins the wheel?
My guess is because they don't want to be rushed and possibly load the wrong puzzle into the board on the fly. This way they only need one of two. (We did establish they have a "harder" puzzle ready if they hit the $100K on the wheel, did we not?)

It also allows the choice to feel more important and dramatic if the audience has time to sit and think about it. I imagine it's a decent armchair quarterbacking moment.

/inb4 they actually use this as a puzzle on the show
//they did on the May 9, 2013 (https://andynwof.wordpress.com/2013/05/10/wof-recap-may-9-2013/) show, damn it

Not sure if you're joking, but in case you're not: No, that was never established. In fact, I would be shocked if that was true.

Yeah, that caught me by surprise as well. I think the only way that would be allowed is if they specifically told the contestants as part of the rules that the million-dollar bonus puzzle was chosen from a different, harder set. And if they had been telling contestants that for a few years, we WOULD have heard about it by now.

Fair enough; I thought we went over that a while ago and did in fact hear about it. I am happy to sit corrected.

Unsurprisingly, tonight's choice of bonus round categories were completely different than last night's. My presumption is that each week has its own complete set of 15 bonus puzzles and that the 10 that don't get used get put back in the pile for potential use at a later date. I also suspect that you still may have a category show up 2 or 3 times in a week, but be different puzzles (not that we'll notice). If the staff can do 15 unique categories for a week, that's pretty hardcore.
-
I would love for them to do something like Person-Place-Thing as the choices, just once.
-
I expect that to come up when the show hits Budget Mode™ around February-March.
/in that situation, what do you pick? Place I guess...
