Title: Sale of the Century: Syndicated Winner's Board
Post by: Vahan_Nisanian on January 02, 2015, 10:56:22 AM
How many Three-week Winner's Board champions on the Syndicated edition? It might give us a clue as to how many weeks season 2 had. I know of the following:

Alan Cevednik (Failed to clear all the prizes and $50,000)

Sandi (? ? ?)

Lisa Munoz (Clared all the prizes and $50,000)

Jerry (? ? ?)

Curtis Warren (Cleared all the prizes and $50,000)

Cindy (? ? ?) (Failed to clear all the prizes and $50,000)

Chuck Donegan said he only recalls two contestants clearing the Winner's Board on the Syndicated show.

You asked that in the other Sale thread that was going on, and no one answered it. So you made a whole new topic out of it?

Because I felt it would get lost in the shuffle.

When GSN gets done with the current lease, I'll update the episode guide here again.

If someone knew the answer, they would answer it there. You need to learn to be more patient.

I'll give him (partial) benefit of the doubt on that one. The discussion was pretty heavy on clock technology, so his question was a little out of place and would've gotten lost in the shuffle.

/Mind you, I said partial

Oh, come on, Aaron! Weeks ago, you criticized me for complaining about GSN moving Super Password to Thursdays only. And yet at the same time, you complained about GSN doing the same thing, too.

It's not fair! Am I supposed to be silenced for criticizing GSN? Am I supposed to be bullied by you and people like you to bow down to GSN for everything they say and do? Surprised they didn't put "You are not allowed to say anything bad about anything GSN says and does" in the rules.

It's not fair!

My fifth-grade teacher would hand out a one-page writing assignment as punishment to any student who uttered these words, whether or not it was in fact accurate.

Appropos of nothing, mind you.

If you think *this* is the reason that nobody respects you around here, then, man, you really REALLY don't get it.

I did? Show me. And I highly doubt I was complaining.

And you saying "it's not fair!", as Chris L. said, makes you look like a child and not a grown man. And no, you don't get any of it.

You are entitled to have an opinion. We all are. I personally don't like the fact that GSN is down to 3 hours of classics a day. However, I don't obsess on it or complain.

And P.S. - crying to Casey on his blog makes you look even more like an insufferable jackbag.

Was I the only one who linked the statement "Casey Abell is a man I have great respect for" to the "everyone should strive to be more like Zach Horan" statement?

In all seriousness...what's this, the eighth or ninth time he promised to stop this crap cold and reneged on his word?

That actually didn't hit me, but now that you mention it, Vahan's crying about being bullied reminds me of CarShark saying a lot of the same, when in reality, we were just trying to talk some sense into him.

Hmmmmm........

Because I felt it would get lost in the shuffle.
And if it does get "lost in the shuffle" it means people either didn't know the answer to your question or didn't feel like giving it to you.

We are not here to be your vessel of information, and your behavior is tiring. You think it isn't fair that we don't do everything you want which puts you roughly on par with your average preschooler.

Before you went and changed your post, you said "I see no shame in what I am doing." You are clearly in the minority. You cried to Casey about the GSF. If you don't like it here, why do you continue to post?

People like them? What kind of people? Name some names instead of hiding behind generalizations.

Of course he sees no shame in what he's doing; Aaron. He wants what he wants and if he has to ruin a community to do it then that's just collateral damage. I've started a thread in BTS and hopefully soon he will get his wish about posting over with Casey Abell, someone that Vahan admires and aspires to be.

Because I'm passionate about game shows. I do have a life. I'm mostly here, because guests are not allowed to view certain sections.

I've never talked down to you. But, you're apparently so sensitive that constructive criticism is lost on you.

People on this forum have told you to clean up your act for more than two years now. Ever since the last presidential election you've been saying you would improve.

It's January 2, 2015. If you're going to shoot a virtual middle finger to everyone who tries to help (blunt as it may be), you can't cry when you get the same reaction, especially when you arrogantly tell people you're not going anywhere. That's a Horan move.

Quit bitching about it here and quit bitching about it on other people's blogs. Man up or shut up.

I think he might've been referring to me in this case.

And I didn't say that either.

I don't want an apology, though, because it means diddlydick coming from him.

I decided to look up Abell's blog for a second...it seems he has two regular commenters who hang on most of his words.

The other is Scott "LGY" Rahner.

Don't know what, if anything, some might wanna make of it, but thought I'd just toss it out there.

I'm with you, but at the same time I think I can understand why he stopped. The commute he put himself through certainly would take its toll on any of us and maybe Jim just got tired of it all.

Complete speculation, but I think it's plausible.

Travel can be tough, but big money can make it taste better.

Any ideas on what he got paid for hosting? For that matter, what is the salary range for game show hosting then & now?

Dunno about current salaries; IIRC, Drew got $5M or so when he took over TPiR back in '07, but I dunno how that was structured.

Chris C. noted that Allen Ludden made $4,000 a week on Password Plus (http://www.gameshowforum.org/index.php/topic,23397.msg287867.html#msg287867) in 1979, so I imagine Jim's salary on Card Sharks was slightly less.

Wiki says (go with me here) that Chuck Woolery was making $65K a year on Wheel and wanted 500K. The article cites a 2007 interview with Woolery, who said 500K was more on par with what other hosts of the era made. I read elsewhere (might've been that Come On Down book from the late-80s) that he was making more like 350K.

So I'm guessing anywhere between 200-500K in the early-80s. A few million now. Then again, I doubt your comedian-turned-host is making Trebek or Sajak money, just like I doubt Bill Rafferty or Peter Tomarken (great as they were) pulled Barker or Richard Dawson money.

Curt Alliaume's Game Shows '75 website says (and I have no reason to believe he'd make it up): Chuck was earning $300,000 per annum in 1981 and wanted a raise to $500,000. Merv Griffin was willing to go to $375,000 and thus Pat Sajak gets a new gig.

I think it was in one of the many Uncle John's Bathroom Readers that Ray Combs was earning $800,000 per year at the zenith of Family Feud's popularity on CBS. Another "I think I read" that Regis was earning $250,000 an episode at one point on Millionaire, but it could be a misplaced decimal point or I just remembered something out of whole cloth, and Harry Eisenberg's book sez that Alex was pulling down $500,000 annually as host/producer of America's Favorite Answer and Question Show. For the time period where he was doing double duty for Mark Goodson, he might have earned half again as much.

Jim Perry would be making decent money as host of Card Sharks and Sale of the Century and considering the parity of the Canadian dollar his work on Definition was probably enough for him to buy a twelve-pack at Tim Horton's.

$250k an episode for Regis isn't too far off. It was reported at $20 million a year. That might figure out to more than $250k even.

That would mean he was doing eighty shows a year, which would have been the period when it was on twice a week as opposed to when it was the equivalent of an hour-long daily. Thank you for the corroboration.

Yes. Right after $ale (1989/90 IIRC) he did a Wolpert pilot called "The Brainy Bunch." He also did another lottery game for what was then Pearson called "Wanna Bet?" A bit of a dagger for us fans, it used the set from the failed 1996 "Card Sharks" pilot with Tom Green, putting it in the same time frame. Like a lot of hosts, I don't think Jim made an entirely conscious decision to stop, but quietly retired as the work dried up.

And more's the pity; he had what amounts to four solid hits, each of which showcased a different part of the host's toolbox. For example, had he been chosen to host Trump Card you'd probably forget that it was just questions-and-answers all the way through with little else to prop it up.
