Title: "Quizmaster" Bill Cullen biography available now!
Post by: Matt Ottinger on July 01, 2013, 11:04:12 PM

You would think Adam would have had a little warning about this, but Bear Manor Media says it\'s available for sale immediately!

Our own Adam Nedeff.  A biography of Bill Cullen.  Lots of original research, new interviews and never-before-heard anecdotes.  Why are you still reading this when you could be placing your order?  I\'ve read it, it\'s wonderful.  Buy dozens, make Adam rich.

$33 for a paperback?

$33 for a paperback?

Think of it as five cents per page or 16 cents per photo.

And thanks, Matt!

Uh, no, I did terrible math there. It\'s 578.

Okay, that\'s still a plenty impressive number. :)

But I urge you to make a Kindle version available at some point down the road. Some of us don\'t buy physical books anymore, full-stop.

I don\'t own a Kindle, I apologize if it\'s a stupid question...There\'s a PDF version for sale at the link, can a Kindle not handle that?

Yes, a Kindle can read PDF files, but a) I won\'t even call it a mediocre experience, let alone a good one, and b) $33 is WAY too much to be asking for a digital document in an industry where Apple opened up antitrust cans of worms by engineering a price hike from $10 to $15 for new books from major authors, in a digital format that is much better for the reader.

I will plug this book a little bit more here...

.... having actually heard a few of the anecdotes from the book dictated by Adam, himself....

.... do yourselves a favor and buy this book. It\'s now because of some of those anecdotes that I truly look up to who I now call Bill \"Effing\" Cullen. Yes, he was the man.

Isn\'t it ironic that you can\'t really kindle a fire with a kindle but you can with paper?  I\'m old-fashioned.  I like books that are printed on paper.

Regarding a kindle version, one of my relatives has poor eyesight.  She used to listen to books on tape and CD; now she relies on the kindle.

The audience and the need are out there.

Adam, congrats. In following your FB posts, I know it\'s been a long road for you, but well worth the effort I\'m sure!

I do second the Kindle suggestion...to me, it\'s just a matter of convenience, even though I\'m a bit of a purist.

Let me also point out that Amazon makes it pretty easy to make a Kindle version available, to the point where you are more-or-less home if you can convert the book to a Word doc, or a webpage. The financial breakdowns of it may not make sense to you, but I urge you to at least look into it.

There are also apps out there that can help you do the formatting yourself if you want; I\'ve used Sigil for a bunch of stuff and like it,

The only problem is it\'s now officially out of my hands (the copyright is in my name, but the publishing rights belong to the publishing company). But I\'m definitely listening to the demand and I\'ll pass the word along.

Yeah, that\'s definitely a problem. Hopefully that\'s a lesson learned for the future if you decide to do this again.

Considering said company thinks $33 is a fair price to charge for a friggin\' PDF, you\'ll excuse me if my hopes aren\'t high, but if it\'s what can be done, it\'s what can be done.

Funnily enough, that book I wrote before the Bill Cullen book, but editing and layout turned into such a mammoth project (2000 pages combined) that I wound up getting Bill\'s book out first.

I am guessing (though I may be wrong) that this is one of those print-on-demand outfits, which would explain the high cost of the book. I wouldn\'t expect to see this on Amazon or in your local Books-A-Plenty anytime soon.

EDIT: A little Googling indicates that this is in fact the case.

Yeah, Lulu is how I did mine (and this is Adam\'s thread, so I won\'t plug it here). and it works pretty well for what it is. Yes, it\'s pretty easy to get the work on Kindle  (tougher to get it on Nook, although that\'s all but dead anyway.) And while I\'m a print guy, I did sell a couple e-books as well (thank you!) and it was all relatively painless.

Anyway, having gone through the birthing process myself, congratulations, Adam!

I would encourage all to read this book! Besides being a wonderful tribute to the Dean of Game Show Hosts, it includes tremendous insight into the game show makers of the day including Goodson-Todman, Bob Stewart and Barry-Enright. It also paints a fascinating picture of the life cycle of the game show genre from the 50s to present.

Even with all the great information included, you never lose sight that the star of this book is Bill Cullen. I found myself sad at the end of the book that Ann Cullen had lost her beloved husband and that we had lost our television friend. A great read - thank you, Adam!

BTW, the story of how Bob Stewart got some of the set pieces for Three on a Match is priceless! Again, Adam, thank you!

Now, see, THAT is service. (That is also a far-more-reasonable price.)

One sorta-small, sorta-not nitpick you might want to attend to: whoever took care of the submission with Amazon (I dunno if it was you or your publisher) submitted the TITLE IN ALL CAPS, AND I DO NOT WANT THE TITLE SHOUTING AT ME FROM MY BOOK LIST. Know what I mean? :)

That said, I am sure you have made a few sales, myself included once I know if that can be easily fixed or not. (To wit: I\'m buying the book. If it can be fixed, I\'ll wait until it\'s fixed to do it, If it can\'t be fixed, I\'ll suck it up, but it\'s gonna twinge at me every time I pick up my Kindle.) Thank you very much for looking into it!

Also, I spoke too soon...it\'s not coming up on the Kindle Store on either of my devices (a 3rd-gen Kindle Keyboard and a 1st-gen Kindle Fire) but as Adam links it\'s clearly there and I\'m sure it just needs to be ingested into their search engines. I suggest just going to Adam\'s link and buying it there and having it sent to your device from that.

The Kindle app works very, very well on the smaller iDevices, comparing quite favorably to an actual Kindle, especially if you have good eyesight and don\'t mind reading small text on a small screen. (Of course, you don\'t even have to do that if you don\'t mind a few extra page turns.) The only drawback is that you can\'t sideload your own books onto it, but that\'s easy enough to accomplish with iBooks and something like Calibre for conversion.

(I actually found myself going back to the e-ink Kindle for serious reading over my Fire, because I realized just how much I love reading on an e-ink screen.)

Bought the kindle version because the price was right and saw this:

This version of the book may be slightly abridged from the print version.

Is this a normal thing?

Setting that aside, looking forward to late night reading. If there\'s a hardback version sometime, I might be willing to kill some trees for that.

Is that in the legal boilerplate for the book itself? It may be there to cover themselves because the photos had to be resized for digital publication, I\'m sure. I doubt the text itself is abridged even a little, if at all.

Adam, I would love to know, in percentages and without revealing sales numbers, the split between digital and hardcopy orders, after a period of time.

And I\'ll echo Mr. Lemon\'s point that the ALL-CAPS book title is cringeworthy and should be fixed.

I\'m working on this; I have an email in to BearManor pointing this out and also pointing out that other titles under their umbrella have Kindle Store entries that aren\'t all-capped.

(I do note that it\'s made its way into the search results now; hooray! And another point in BearManor\'s favor: unlike some small publishing houses, the quality of the Kindle conversion, from what I could tell of the sample, is quite good.)

I picked up the Kindle version last night (I happen to be reading it on an iPad) - it\'s an excellent read, and as others have said, the Kindle version appears to be quite good.  Other books I have Kindle versions of don\'t always get formatted quite correctly, but this book has had no issues.   It\'s a very interested read - I\'m enjoying it immensely.

Since you kids with your fancy technologies threw a bit of a snit over whether this would even come out in e-form in the first place, I want to post my own old-person snit.  Instant gratification is a wonderful thing and I get that the e-books are electronically poofed right into your iThings.  Still, it will bother me something awful if, by paying substantially more for the physical thing that I have to think still drives the BearManor business model, I have to wait weeks before they actually get around to printing them while the rest of you are electronically enjoying all that Nedeff goodness.

I might very well have been the first person to place a traditional order.  That was on July 1, when the website clearly indicated the book was \"in stock\".  Now I\'m hearing that the actual publication date is July 17, though the electronic version is available immediately.  That\'s not sitting well with me.

That\'s totally valid, but I\'ll say this. I wasn\'t going to pay $30 for a book to wedge between Victoria Coren and Bob Harris on the shelf. I\'m happy to pay $10 for a digital copy that I can carry around with hundreds of other books.

In the same way that Craig\'s List shifted the classified ad paradigm, so too did the Kindle upset the paperback book cart.

I don\'t think Matt is complaining that we get bits for cheaper, I think he\'s complaining that the BearManor dude (and, yeah, it\'s mostly one dude) is a little sloppy in a suspicious manner with regard to communicating whether his product is actually in stock or not. And I agree that releasing the Kindle version earlier than he ships his actual print orders seems a little stupid from a business standpoint. I\'d have been happy to wait a while if I knew a Kindle version was coming in order for them to maximize early-supporter physical sales.

The fact that my email from yesterday has as yet gone unreplied-to is not thrilling me, either.

I placed my order thorugh Amazon for a physical book. Reading all these entries about all these different electronic devices has left me totally confused about what works best and how they work. I\'m no Luddite, though. E-books are great for some. My wife swears by her Kindle.  But simplicity works best for me even if I have to shell out extra and wait a bit longer

I want to step in right now and say that right now, in the Television category, the Kindle version is #15, between Wil Wheaton\'s memoirs and a book about Dr. Who. In the \"regular\" book rankings, it\'s at #61. I was hoping this book would have an audience, but my expectations were never THAT high. Thank you all!

This exactly.  I am literally the earliest of supporters in this case, and now I\'m waiting on the sidelines twiddling my thumbs for what could easily be three weeks from the time I placed my order.  E-books should absolutely be cheaper and faster, that\'s their great advantage. I\'m just disappointed that it appears the physical books aren\'t even ready yet.  I feel misled.

(Now granted, I\'ve already read the book, or at least a very late draft of it.  But they don\'t know that.)

Well, if it helps at all, now that I\'ve been told that my problem with the book\'s metadata is going to be addressed, I\'m gonna give it a week or so for it to actually happen, so I don\'t get to read the book yet either. :)

This exactly.  I am literally the earliest of supporters in this case, and now I\'m waiting on the sidelines twiddling my thumbs for what could easily be three weeks from the time I placed my order.

If I didn\'t know better, I\'d think you\'d crowdfunded a smart watch.

Hmm, interesting developments. The title is now in correct case on the website, and showed up correctly when I had a sample sent to my iPod. But it\'s still all-capped on my Windows Phone, and the metadata from the sample is still showing up all-capped in Calibre. (Both Kindles are at home so I was unable to check on those.) I\'ll give it a couple more days but I may just have to suck it up or figure out how to hack into the metadata myself.

EDIT: One more important setting I just discovered: If you go to Manage Your Devices on your Amazon Kindle account, then scroll to the bottom, there is a new option for Automatic Book Update, which sounds like it will update books when fixes have been made. So, basically, if anyone other than me was waiting to buy at this point, there\'s no need to \'cuz it\'ll update when it\'s fixed. Buy with confidence! (I just did!)

The Kindle app works very, very well on the smaller iDevices, comparing quite favorably to an actual Kindle, especially if you have good eyesight and don\'t mind reading small text on a small screen. (

It also has at least decent support for Voiceover, which is the text-to-speech program intended for the blind. It\'s under Settings/Accessibility. Then you can have your iPhone just read the book to you.

Some of us who can see use it too; it\'s the easiest way to see exactly what percentage of battery is available on an iPod Touch since for some reason Apple has decided that we don\'t get to see that. :)

Now that\'s some news I can use; thanks for the tip there.

/Learned lots from the book, but what amused me most is how Bill became more curmudgeonly about the state of television and game shows in particular in his waning years. So that means complaining about game shows is acceptable because if The Dean can do it, it must be OK.

I plan to crack the book open this weekend (in a not so literal manner) but that\'s very interesting. I\'d take late-80s television over what we have any day of the week.

Although it just goes to show that no matter what era we\'re in, there\'s always been complaints about how awful TV has become...even in the 60s.

That isn\'t a problem on an iPad, tho, is it? It\'s not a a problem on the iPhones because there is a setting you can turn on that shows you directly; for some reason Apple turns that off on the iPods.

(What I do is go into Settings > General > Accessibility and then way at the bottom there is a way to assign what a triple-click of the button does; I set that to Voiceover, Then, when I need to know, I triple-click, then tap the battery icon and it tells me what I need to know, then triple-click again to turn it off.)

The iPad does give a numerical reading. On the Touch the only indication is when you get the 20% or 10% remaining warning.

You stole the tip right out of my mouth. And sorry, yes of course it\'s Settings/General/Accessibility. I use an Android, where the Kindle app is still lacking for access. But I can read the book on the Kindle PC app thankfully.

I\'m with Carlisle and Matt on this one. Since I have an Amazon account, I will order my actual book copy through them.

I\'m still biased toward hard copies myself.  I have a small collection of autographed books, most of which were personally obtained.  (An GS related exception: Chuck Barris.  I ordered it through a bookstore in NJ where he was signing his \"Confessions of a Dangerous Mind\").

Any thoughts about offering autographed copies, Adam?  I\'d probably spring for one...

My copies (which I ordered directly from the publisher) arrived today as well.  So the physical books are ready after all, and the publication date of the 17th is some sort of Amazon fiction.

Kindles are nice and all, but there\'s nothing like being able to thumb through a nice hefty book to see what pictures catch your eye.  And there are a TON of pictures, many of which I\'ve never seen before.  Once again, Adam, congratulations.

The other advantage, to me, is the ability to treat the book like a trophy. Have it on display in your living room and it\'s a conversation starter or just a way to let a new visitor know something about you.

Thank you, Matt, and thank you especially for your contributions to the finished product. Having a fan who also happened to have deep knowledge of the subject was especially helpful for getting a few of my points across in the text.

Also, to address this question--and I\'m flattered by the requests I\'ve received on here and on Facebook--if you already bought a copy and you\'d like me to autograph it, send me a private message including your mailing address. Send me the book along with check/money order/cash only to cover the cost of mailing it back to you, and I\'ll happily sign it and pass it right back your way.

I was going to ask if it was possible to get it signed if I just so happened to see you when I attend \"America\'s Greatest Game Shows\" at Madame Tussauds next month... except I don\'t see it on the site anymore.  I\'d hate to hear the show\'s no longer a go.

But since I am going to be in the Los Angeles area next month... Well, it\'d be a lot cheaper for me to have a copy with me than getting one sent across the Canadian border twice.

Personally I find it difficult to loan Kindle books, especially if the loan-ee doesn\'t have one. I can loan my hard copy of The Nerdist Way or Predictably Irrational to people who would benefit from them, but not a pile of ones-and-zeroes.

Wanted to come back and say that I just happened to check and it appears the Kindle version of the book had had the all-caps title issue fixed. If it\'s bothering you, delete the book from your Kindle (or other device; this worked on my Windows Phone 8 as well) and re-download it from the archive (this assumes that you have Automatic Book Update turned on, I think, although I assumed that would just update the book on the fly) and you will find that it\'s properly-cased now.

The answer to that is in the form of \"what I think\" and not \"what I know for sure.\" Absolutely none of the publicity stills that G-T and NBC released for the show were on color; since one of the paintings for that segment was done by Ann, Fred Wostbrock thinks Bill asked a photographer to come in and take pictures of the segment for a memento. BTW, the photos on pages 205 and 225 were originally in color too.

To everybody who bought a copy of Quizmaster:

Please turn your book to page 250. The question that Gene Rayburn read was \"John said to Mary, \'I think you have the makings of a fine (_____).\'\"

And the reason we now know this is because 50 years ago, some employee of the National Broadcasting Company thought the prank was funny enough to make a note of it in the network\'s official program files for the show. So...go ahead and jot that down in the margins.

Well, it's a backwards way of doing things, but apparently due to a surprising number of fairly recent requests, Quizmaster: The Life and Times and Fun and Games of Bill Cullen is now available as a hardcover book.
