Title: $ale of the Century with Silvio Santos
Post by: Vahan_Nisanian on June 24, 2013, 10:47:13 PM

While I was looking at the list of versions of the show by country on Wikipedia, one thing that drew my attention to the most was that there was a Brazilian version hosted by Brazilian TV Show host and businessman, Silvio Santos. It was called So Compra Quem Tem, which is Portuguese for \"So Who\'s Buying?\". But all that was known about it was that it ran sometime from the late-60\'s to the mid-70\'s. There was even a photo from this version, with a brief summary, roughly translated from Portuguese.

My goodness, those are some large podia.

I wonder what the rest of the set looked like; maybe a split-level set like the American version?

Is there a game show in Brazil that Silvio Santos did NOT host?

Is it just me or does the first picture give off a laundromat style vibe?

Heh. I could see that...either laundromat or appliance (repair) store of the era.

An another thing:

That photo I posted, it showed two of the contestants showing something. But I could never figure out what they were for.

They seem to be similar to what two of the contestants are doing during an Instant Bargain in progress in this photo from the Jack Kelly era (the number \"3\" they have on two of their podiums). But again, because very little of the late 60\'s/70\'s episodes of the show exist, I have no idea what they were for.

I always thought the way the Instant Bargains originally worked was that you had to buzz-in immediately after it was revealed to purchase it, just like on the UK version.

My first guess was that the 3s in the American picture represented the number of bargains bought, but I think there were only 5 in a show, so two players with a 3 doesn\'t make sense.

I think early on in the run they did an Open Sale at the halfway point, so that guess does make sense, depending on when the picture was taken.

The picture looks to be a bit later (but not too later) into Jack Kelly\'s tenure.

I was looking at the 1st board game adaptation, and I noticed the wall behind the contestants was beige, not blue, like in all those recently-resurfaced photos.

Seems Kelly occasionally wore glasses as well.

MB had a tendency to use models instead of the actual hosts in box game photographs (e.g. Wheel of Fortune), so that might not be Kelly.

FWIW, the pictures with Jack Kelly on GettyImages were labeled \"Sale of the Century - Season 1\"

The Wheel games are weird, though: the host isn\'t Chuck, but the hostess is Susan (Milton Bradley paid her $500 for the use of her likeness).

Proof or not real.

Susan Stafford\'s book Stop the Wheel, I Want To Get Off!...I think. Searching the book through Google Books doesn\'t turn up anything, and I know I found the info somewhere reputable (i.e., not TV Tropes or Wikipedia)...I just wish I could remember where.
