Title: New game show games/apps
Post by: Marc412 on April 01, 2013, 04:50:45 PM
I figured that since I discovered a fun new iPad game today and the old thread is archived, I\'d start a new thread with it.

It\'s called QuizCross, and it\'s best described as Tic Tac Dough with Friends.  The big difference is that when you pick a category, you answer three multiple choice questions in it, and some of them are quite challenging.  If you get them all, the box is yours irrevocably.  If not, your opponent is allowed to try to steal the box by getting more of the same questions right than you on a future turn.  (Available for both iOS and Android devices)

Got any other games you\'d like us to know about?

Brainbow Numbers is a terribly-named app that is the numbers game from Countdown, and it\'s a lot of fun. The same company made a similar game that is more of a solo puzzle version as well.

Ludia is branching out from their Price is Right Slots and have created Price is Right Bingo for Facebook. This is the first Bingo game I\'ve played on Facebook, but it\'s exactly what it says- it\'s Price is Right theme bingo.

4 Score Games had \"That Game Show\" (yup, actual title).  It was a combination of \"Crosswits\", \"Wheel of Fortune\" and \"Scrabble\" (the game show versions that aired on NBC).  The theme song sort of sounds like that of \"Who Wants To Be A Millionaire\".

Three players participate (if less than three humans, the empty spot(s) is/are taken by (a) computer player(s)) -- and are given a toss-up clue and a short word to solve.  The first player to buzz in with the right answer earns points.  Then, the letters from the correct answer to the toss up are lit up in the appropriate spaces of at least one puzzle word and/or the theme of the puzzle.

The player credited with the right answer has a chance to identify a puzzle word (and increase the value of the round in the process), the overall theme or play another toss-up clue.

By the way, the toss-up clues and answers have virtually no connection to the puzzle theme.  The toss-up answers are there to fill in blanks of the crossword-esque grid (made up of puzzle words) and identity of the puzzle theme (displayed in a WoF-like style).

\"That Game Show\" is like \"Tetris\".  It\'s better to play the game than read the description.  Unfortunately, it appears 4 Score Games doesn\'t offer this anymore.

\'Tis a shame.  Because I like \"That Game Show\" -- even if it deserves a better title.

The only game I can compare this to is an early 90s DOS game show game called Lexi Cross.

I remember this game, and despite it being fairly good, I had a few issues with it. One, the computer player is too easy. Two, the game gets tedious after the first few times you play. It could use a little more variety in gameplay. Three, the bonus for solving the mystery phrase goes up as the round goes along. If anything, it should go down since more letters in the puzzle are revealed.

Overall though, a fairly polished game, and I would have loved to see them work out a few kinks in a second edition.

Trivia Death Match with Ken Jennings is out for your iDevice, working well on the Phone and Pad. I prefer the Pad because the type and buttons are larger. You and Ken answer the same twenty multiple-choice questions, scoring points for right answers and speed of response.

Jellyvision has come out with another game for iOS- it\'s called Lie Swatter. It\'s a turn based trivia game where you try and \"swat\" all of the lies in a given category of statements. At its core, you\'re playing turn based Wipeout, but the writing makes it much better.

Two new updates:

Wheel of Fortune Cubed is available on iOS for a buck. It looks like a combination of Wheel and crossword puzzles.

Price is Right Slots on Facebook just got a visual overhaul and a \"vintage slots\" section. First slot available is Super Ball, and the bonus isn\'t worth playing- you\'re just clicking a lane to roll the ball from, and the game does the rest of the work.

Million Second Quiz now has a game for your iDevice. You play against some other person in the country in a 10 question showdown. Keep racking up poins, because if you get to 3500, the game asks for your phone number so it can be passed along to casting directors. It\'s a really sleek app, and I like the music loop on the main page.

I do have issue with the fact that MSQ plagiarized a question straight from The Chase.

That\'s interesting, because a question during Christian\'s episode was about what Mexicans call Rio Grande, and I remember that as the question that ended Steve McClellan\'s dreams of becoming a Millionaire and sent him home with $16,000.

The question: can you really plagiarize a trivia question?
/and could you write one more in my wheelhouse, please.

You can\'t plagiarize a fact, but I suspect you can plagiarize the phrasing of it.

(Or, it could just be the same person using the same question for two shows he was working for at about the same time.)

Title: New game show games/apps
Post by: pacdude on August 18, 2013, 04:50:05 PM
My issue is that the phrasing was exactly the same. Facts pop up all the time. The \"flavor text\" of both questions was phrased exactly the same, which I think is inappropriate.

The MSQ game online should absolutely NOT be used as an audition method for two very simple reasons:

Instead of randomizing questions, this randomizes bouts. I played the same bout twice within an hour.

EDIT: Wait a moment... that\'s actually a good idea for the show. Have sleep-deprived people answer the same questions they answered an hour ago, and see if their responses change.

My instinct is that it\'s just a really interesting coincidence.  A question has to be written (or, theoretically, stolen) then edited and approved by a head writer.  They then have to decide where to put it (for MSQ, there\'s the live prime time show, the untelevised 23 hours a day the game will be played, and the online component) then it\'s got to get in the hands of the people doing the online game so that it can get loaded into whatever software program they\'re using.  Each step takes time.  I can tell you they\'ve been working on material for MSQ for months, so I struggle with the idea that a writer saw something on television, plagiarized it, and got it through that gauntlet in a little more than a week.

^ Out of curiousity, Matt: On QuizBusters, does the research staff use encyclopedias (e.g. World Book, Britannica) as reference sources, and if so, do you get a new set every year?

Title: New game show games/apps

the research staff

That\'s adorable.

Seriously, we\'re a local public television show in a small market.  It\'s amazing they pay ME.  There\'s no \"staff\" to research anything.  We get most of our material from national providers of high school quiz questions, and we count on them to have done their own homework, though if I see something that strikes me as troublesome, I might look up something myself.

Also, no one uses encyclopedias anymore.

But he raises a good question: when you\'re writing Quick Ten, Lightning Round and Pop Quiz questions, those have to come from somewhere, and you can\'t just make stuff up. If a question is written about Hawaii as the 50th state, do you have to look that up to confirm that you were right, or can you take it as written and hope that an error doesn\'t get in?

I get that Quizbusters isn\'t Jeopardy in size or scope, but I\'m assuming that at least whoever is writing up their packet has done some diligence.

Interesting that this is coming up, since I happen to be working on material tonight.

I\'ve always been a little circumspect about this, even on the forum, but as far as WKAR goes, I am the show\'s only writer.  All the segments you mentioned, plus the video bonus categories, are my responsibility.  I won\'t get into the nuances of how I put everything together, but yes, of course I don\'t just trust my personal gut instinct.  To use your example, I wouldn\'t look up whether or not Hawaii was the 50th state, because I simply know it is. On the other hand, while I\'m almost positive Arizona was the 48th, I\'d look that up.  The station trusts me, and I take the responsibility seriously, but there is no set of rules I have to follow or documentation I have to provide.

During my junior year of high school, I was going to apply for a job writing for NAQT (and even wrote some pyramidal questions as practice), but since I was so busy with school, I had to put it off.

The worst part is that DePaul doesn\'t even have a quiz bowl team, so I have no excuse not to apply for the job now...

Hmm. You figure \"Thousands of U.S. friendly questions\" is at least 2,000 by definition (though I\'d sure like it if they gave us an actual number), so that\'s an okay amount of content, too, especially for a content-heavy game like this.

That said, in the Final Chase, that seems like content wasted much of the time...I realize the effect wouldn\'t be the same, but I\'d rather it fill the Chaser\'s run with gibberish or something and only show me a question when Mark\'s missed it and I get a shot at the pushback.

Does the progression go cash build-table chase-final chase, or do you have to sit through two rounds of AI partners playing?

The one thing that sticks for me when playing a quiz game against the computer is that I\'m playing a quiz game against the computer. In Trivia Match I know that Ken Jennings answered all of the questions and that provides a fair metric to compare my own skills and recollection--does The Chase make any such claim or are you playing against an imaginary number generator?

some new finds in the UK iTunes store:

"Tipping Point", which plays fairly accurately to this show that seemed popular enough in the UK, but bored me to tears.

"Millionaire", a new version featuring a simulated set and the clock, which you can disable.

"Catch Phrase", again a new version (the old one was titled "classic catch phrased") with the modern Mr. Chips and gameplay that seems smoother and faster than the old version.  I just gave up on some games with the old version as they just took way too long.

A free version and a paid version ($2.99) are in the US iTunes store.  The free version does not have many ads (4 per game, between rounds) and they can easily be x'ed out.  It's a fun game, with only a few Brit-centric phrases.
