Title: Do You Roku?
Post by: TimK2003 on February 22, 2013, 05:21:48 PM

I have been enjoying my Roku player since the holidays, and its fun finding some lost shows and movies on the hundreds of \"niche channels\" they carry.

Some of the worthwhile channels I have found, outside of the usual Hulu/Crackle/Netflix heavies:

N2TV -- A hearty supply of \"Celebrity Bowling\" episodes

POP FLIX/CLASSIC TV -- Mostly Public Domain shows, but they have quite a few \"You Bet Your Life\" shows, and for you Betty White fans, they also carry most. if not all eps of \"Date With The Angels\" and \"Life With Elizabeth\"

JLTV (Jewish Life TV) -- At least twice a week, they show old reruns of the \"Soupy Sales Show\" and \"Candid Camera\"

I also love using the \"channel\" called PLEX:  Pretty much it allows you to \"download\" most videos off the internet and watch it later \"on demand\" on your TV set.  I \"Plex\" many of the videos posted here on the Forum as well as the other game show videos posted on YouTube since most of them look and sound a heck of a lot better (and bigger) on my widescreen HDTV than over my computer screen.

Any other good Roku channels that you have found watching a lot, game show worthy or not?

Af first I said \"damn, that\'s the worst description of a media server client I have ever read.\" But then I dug a little.

So are you using the MyPlex thing to queue up web videos to watch on Plex? And is there any sort of a fee for this? Seems pretty useful for a lot of people if it\'s acting like you say it is.

My current YouTube Roku client is called BuzzFeed. Type in a username, and you can access its public playlists. That\'s a quick way to line up some game shows using your own username, then sit in front of the TV and enjoy. It also has a search function. It would be ideal if you were able to follow channels without changing the base username to start, but hey.

Add http://www.thenowhereman.com/roku/ to your Roku and then you get a live Challenge TV (UK game shows) feed for free.

Nope, all I did was follow the syncing-up directions on the Roku Plex channel, install a \"Plex It\" button on my computer\'s bookmark\'s bar and whenever I see a webpage that has a single video on it (I can\'t get it to cue up multiple videos on one page), I hit \"Plex It\" and then a few seconds later it will show up on my Roku\'s Plex Queue screen.  Unfortunately, for those shows that are broken up into parts, you have to \"Plex It\" each individual part to put into queue.

There is no fee to use Plex, and it kinda runs like the newer Netflix-on-Demand platforms.  You can elect to keep what you watched or you can remove them from your queue at any time.

Through YouTube, I have queued up literally \"seasons\" of old TV shows (I Dream of Jeannie Season 4, for example) and will watch 3 or 4 episodes at a time.

Huh. I can see that being pretty useful since an official YouTube client is still the most glaring omission on the Roku.

I do trust that you have to have Plex Media Center installed and turned on on a PC in your house, though, yes?

This isn\'t true. Plex absolutely charges for some of their services. Maybe you don\'t happen to be using or have been exposed to any of them, and that\'s great if so, but their suite is not 100% free.

When I followed the prompts on my Roku to sign up on my \'puter, I completely bypassed the main Plex Media Center gateway.  I must have been asked to go directly to some sort of plex/activateroku.com site (don\'t remember off hand the exact website).  I do not have Plex Media Center installed anywhere on my computer at the present time.

After finding the main Plex Media Center website, I now get what you are talking about -- So if you use Plex on Roku in it\'s simplest form (which I guess I\'m doing), there is no cost at all nor do you even see all the other things Plex offers -- fee-based or otherwise.  It\'s just a bare bones YouTube (et al) to Roku queuing device.

Well thank you for letting me know about Plex\'s bigger picture.  That explains the Recommendations section on the Roku screen that I couldn\'t do anything with!

Right now, they are early on in the first year of the 70\'s run, when \"Treasure Isle\" host and legendary voiceover performer (Fotomat/Dirt Devil/Owens Corning) John Bartholomew Tucker was co-hosting with Allen Funt.  I never realized how bad that first season was when you compared it to the later years of the 70\'s incarnation of Candid Camera.

As far as Betty White, I counted 20 \"Life w/ Elizabeth\" eps and 18 \"Date w/ the Angels\" eps.

...And there were 24 episodes of Celebrity Bowling.

Thirded, Though I\'ve had the Roku hooked up over a year, I havent really gotten the Pop/Flix Channel as yet..Havent really done a lot with Roku anyway lately.  They do have Internet Archive as a channel..Mostly all the videos you\'d see regularly on their web-based pages, including some old DuMont shows, like Johnny Oleson\'s Kids and Company..As well as some old Game Shows

I\'ve had Roku for over a year now.  I use it to stream movies and TV shows via NetFlix and Amazon.  That\'s pretty much all.  I haven\'t delved much deeper.  I guess I\'ll have to, now!  Thanks guys.

I wish we were able to give rep points. Cory, I give you 10 fake rep points for this post.

And this is a great discussion. I am picking up a Roku today. Thought that it duplicated a lot of functionality of my Apple TV but it seems 100x more useful. Plus, Challenge.

Now all I need is a good HDMI switcher. I have bought two and they are duds.

You know, I have to laugh and look back a second. It seems like just yesterday someone found a stream of GSN that could be accessed via NetShow. It was 56k, very choppy, but it was GSN for those who didn\'t have it! Now I sit in my chair watching my TV, with a device capable of streaming a game show channel from across the pond...I have a feeling Challenge TV will be gaining a lot of stateside viewers today.....:)

Oh!  Was this the time they were using the scat theme instead of the updated traditional one?  (I first saw those episodes when HA! ran them...at the end of that channel\'s run, in fact, they became the Candid Camera Channel pretty much)

Am now wondering which CC\'s USA used to run....I just recall the \"rainbow lens\" episodes...

And I checked my Roku\'s channel shop and didn\'t see JLTV...

I love my Roku, though I haven\'t really explored the channels too much, just the Netflix/Hulu+/Crackle apps. A couple of months ago, I had friends over and we watched a few public domain commercials from the 50s-60s. So hilarious, so sexist, so boring*. I keep saying I\'m going to check out some of the PD horror flicks for lulz.

And yes, who do I have to bribe to get an authentic Youtube app? I don\'t mind going through the avenues described in this thread, but the real thing would be ideal.

{shamelessly blatant plug}If you go to FilmOn, look up 7 Cities. It\'s the low no-budget show I created, wrote, and produced a few years ago. Labor of love, it was.{/shamelessly blatant plug}

*/The probably NSFW version is far more exciting.

Microsoft. Give us $199 and we\'ll hook you right up. :D

EDIT: Reiterating the gold star to Tim...I set up a MyPlex account and was very pleasantly surprised as to what a good experience that was, since Roku\'s UI has never blown my skirt. Now I just have to get around to installing Plex on the new Win8 box...

Weren\'t all of the JBT episodes (with the scat theme) called The New Candid Camera?  When Betsy Palmer replaced him (er, it was Tucker -> Palmer -> Jo Ann Pflug, wasn\'t it?), the theme and title changed back.

Maybe, but I remember it carrying over to the later episodes too, as per the announcer\'s opening spiel.  Don\'t remember the opening to the JBT episodes except for the different theme and the Card Sharks-style logo with the red dots.

Now if only I could find the words to the end theme of the JBT episodes (yes, there was a version of the theme with real words instead of scat)...that\'s haunted me for the last 23 years...

It was verbally called \"The New Candid Camera Show\", but there was never any visual sign or logo which said that.  However, the old 60\'s reruns were still in syndication for a little while when the new version came out (I believe that Cleveland\'s old Channel 61/WKBF ran them until they went belly-up).

Watched Celebrity Bowling tonight on n2TV-Ed Ames/MacLean Stevenson vs. Tom Kennedy/Richard Deacon.  We\'ve talked about this before, but It\'s fun to see who of the celebrities have actually bowled before. MacLean, Ed and Tom look like they have, though they are\'nt great bowlers.  Richard was pretty bad, though he apparently got a strike during the 6th or 7th frame which they dont usually show because of editing the show into a half hour time frame.  Love some of the prizes they gave away..A prehistoric microwave oven, A Ross Stereo system (8-track) and a Chevy Vega if a team bowls 210 or more..

One thing that is sort of annoying are the commercials n2TV sticks in here-Not edited according to the original breaks in the show, so a spot could show up anytime..Not a major thing though..

FWIW, for the Candid Camera fans out there, JLTV has now gone even further back to the 1967 CBS episodes with game show panelist Bess Myerson as Allen Funt\'s co-host.  I have never seen the color CBS version of candid camera before so this is a big treat!

I have noticed that if you visit filmon.tv when signed into a UK VPN service, you get a whole different list of channels. This is of no help to the Roku crowd, of course.

Sorry to dig this old thread up but I just got a Roku Streaming Stick with my new TV. What kind of game show options on Roku are out there now, if any? Looks like all of the above mentioned have come and gone. It would have been nice to see Challenge TV. I thought maybe there have been some new discoveries by now if anything different is even out there. I see there are quite a few "hidden" channels on Roku that you have to physically search for. Thanks in advance!

I haven't browsed the channels in a while, but I imagine you might find some B&W stuff on the public domain channels there. Also, Roku added Youtube recently, so there's a great option for watching games. The quality is lost, as you may expect (slightly pixellated), but still a great viewing option.

YMMV on what you watch, quality-wise, on the YT channel.  While some shows are somewhat grainy, others are in pretty decent shape (just like Nth generation VCR copies you'd get in trades.).

BTW, not only does the PRO channel carry Celebrity Bowling, but they also recently added 7 episodes of "Queen For A Day" -- probably public domain material that is already out there on the trading circuit.

The earliest episodes of Pawnography were available on the Roku History Channel to all, but now it looks like what is available to watch is now behind a (cable?) subscriber wall.

Very slight buyer's remorse for buying the P605 instead of the P607 because of the improved remote of the 607.  The feet are understated, but frankly hidden at the height where you actually watch TV.  That's a good thing, not a bad thing.  Also, they're not adding unnecessarily to the cost for people who mount theirs, and that's also nice.  You might not like how close the feet are to the edges.  If you use them, you really need something wide enough to put it on.

The picture quality is just dandy; you're paying low-end costs for something with a mid-range picture quality.  The P605/607 has local dimming, which is crazy for something at that price point.
Sound is ass, but that's nothing new.

Also, I've been happily teaching Alexa to do party tricks with it.  So that's fun.

Sorry I missed your question... I understand that the hub works with it, but I'm using a small app called quick remote for right now.  It can control the tv on my tablet and receives alexa commands.

Yeah, that was my question, if they worked directly or if there was some kind of go-between to simulate remote commands. Thanks.
