Title: WOF Announcer Poll
Post by: chris319 on November 29, 2010, 05:38:56 PM
Regarding the poll "Who Should Take Over as Wheel of Fortune Annoucer?" at gameshows.about.com found here:

http://gameshows.about.com/b/2010/11/06/wh...e-announcer.htm (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/b/2010/11/06/who-should-take-over-as-wheel-of-fortune-announcer.htm\")

it is possible to increment any candidate's vote tally by directly entering the appropriate URL.

To increment Johnny Gilbert's votes:

http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.h...484&poll1=1 (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.htm?linkback=http%3A%2F%2Fgameshows.about.com%2Fb%2F2010%2F11%2F06%2Fwho-should-take-over-as-wheel-of-fortune-announcer.htm&poll_id=8998178484&poll1=1\")

To increment Rich Fields' votes:

http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.h...484&poll2=1 (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.htm?linkback=http%3A%2F%2Fgameshows.about.com%2Fb%2F2010%2F11%2F06%2Fwho-should-take-over-as-wheel-of-fortune-announcer.htm&poll_id=8998178484&poll2=1\")

To increment Randy West's votes:

http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.h...484&poll3=1 (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.htm?linkback=http%3A%2F%2Fgameshows.about.com%2Fb%2F2010%2F11%2F06%2Fwho-should-take-over-as-wheel-of-fortune-announcer.htm&poll_id=8998178484&poll3=1\")

To increment Pat and Vanna's votes:

http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.h...484&poll4=1 (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.htm?linkback=http%3A%2F%2Fgameshows.about.com%2Fb%2F2010%2F11%2F06%2Fwho-should-take-over-as-wheel-of-fortune-announcer.htm&poll_id=8998178484&poll4=1\")

To increment "Someone else":

http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.h...484&poll5=1 (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.htm?linkback=http%3A%2F%2Fgameshows.about.com%2Fb%2F2010%2F11%2F06%2Fwho-should-take-over-as-wheel-of-fortune-announcer.htm&poll_id=8998178484&poll5=1\")

To increment "Too soon to say":

http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.h...484&poll6=1 (http://\"http://gameshows.about.com/gi/pages/poll.htm?linkback=http%3A%2F%2Fgameshows.about.com%2Fb%2F2010%2F11%2F06%2Fwho-should-take-over-as-wheel-of-fortune-announcer.htm&poll_id=8998178484&poll6=1\")

You can increment these votes repeatedly simply by clicking on your browser's "refresh" button.

One of the candidates posted the link to increment his own votes on his Facebook page. Presumably, with repeated views of that page, he has over 54,000 votes as I write this. That is not to say this particular candidate did so with the specific intent of inflating his vote tally. On the other hand, it is my understanding that the WOF producers intend to audition other announcers. In my opinion it is grossly unfair to the other prospective announcers to conduct a poll such as this at a time when the other candidates are not known to the public and have not yet been heard on the air.

How much credence do these about.com polls hold typically? Do TPTB at WoF take any stock in them, or even know they exist? Looks like just a funsy poll to me.

When you look at how out of kilter the votes are for Rich Fields, it's hard to believe those numbers have any basis in reality.

I maintain that the poll is totally unfair to those who have yet to audition.

Oh, absolutely. I'm just asking if the poll is in any way official, or if it's just a fun poll made by some Joe on the internet. Obviously the results are BS. I'm just wondering if these polls have any actual potential to skew Sony's (or whoever's) decision in who gets the job.

I certainly hope the WOF producers pay no mind to a poll like that and make the decision with their ears based on what they hear on the air. However, on his Facebook page Rich seems to take these numbers seriously:

WOW! I was just shown the poll results for your choice as "Wheel of Fortune" announcer. I am humbled by your overwhelming support. [LINK OMITTED] Almost 43,000 votes!

I strongly suspect the answer to that is "oh hells no."

Before I found out the poll is bogus I cast one vote for Randy because I personally feel he should get the job. Then, in testing those links I ran up everybody's vote total a little bit. But I agree, it is too soon to have an impartial poll and "Too soon to say" is the correct vote at this point.

He'd have been better off not saying anything. What he did say suggests he thinks those wildly skewed numbers are believable.

*GASP* We're....

Freepin' a poll?

Ok with me. ;)

Quite frankly, though, I'd freep "too early."  Jeff Davis was pretty darn good but David Lawrence has his turn and then it's a whole new ball game...

Yes - was trying to correlate the (correct) idea of "It's too early."

Thanks to a Google Chrome extension called "ChromeReload"... Mr. West will be getting my vote.  Every 2 seconds.

Come on guys... let's show them how ballot stuffing is REALLY DONE.

They must have gotten wise, because refreshing the page no longer adds a vote.  Unless I'm doing something wrong, you have to vote from the poll's main page, and you can only do so once.

From a comment on the front page from the poll originator:

[quote name=\'Carrie Grosvenor\' date=\'Nov 30 2010, 8:52 am\']Hey everyone,

Thanks for stopping by and voting, and for all of your comments.

There was a flaw in this poll in that it allowed for multiple votes per person. Normally that’s not a huge deal, but there were a few people using scripts to game the system. That has been fixed now, but obviously the current results are skewed.

I want to point out that this poll had been running along nicely for almost three weeks before the robo-votes started, and the results were in favor of Rich Fields by a very large margin. Obviously not the margin you see in the results right now, but it’s very clear that Fields has a huge fan base.

It’s my fault that the poll was set up this way, and in the future we’ll make sure that, when necessary, the polls are set for one vote per person. If you like, we can redo this one to get a clear result – just let me know in the comments here.

    Thanks! :-)

Poor Rich must be crestfallen to learn that tens of thousands of people didn't really vote for him (he's a hit with the bots, though).

Carrie should discard the current poll because a) the tallies are bogus, and b) there will be more auditioners in the coming weeks and months.

Unless there's evidence to the contrary (and I'm guessing some will turn up), I can't see Mr. Fields being guilty of anything other than going "Gee, I have a lot of votes in this thing.  Thanks, guys."

I don't know that he has a "huge" fan base outside of a gaggle of TPIR fans. Fans he has -- a job, not so much.

He posted a link to the poll on his Facebook page and crowed about those ridiculous numbers. There's enough smoke coming out of that gun for me.

And yet none of his 40,000+ fans ever wished him a happy birthday the other day on the GSF's Birthday Board.
