Title: Best Game Show That Aired On Your Birthdate.
Post by: TimK2003 on June 28, 2010, 10:01:30 PM
Here is an interesting challenge...

1) If possible, take a look at your local TV guide on the exact day you were born (you might be able to find it on line via http://www.tvtango.com (http://\"http://www.tvtango.com\"), or in a newspaper/library archives).
2) Look for all the Game Shows that aired on that day.
3) Out of those game shows which aired on your birth date, choose the one that you ultimately liked the most.
4) Share your answer with the class.

If, for some reason there were no shows that aired on your actual birth date (due to it being a weekend, holiday, or pre-emptions), use the next available day with shows.

Example:  If you were born on, say, (Monday) April 28th, 1969...

On ABC:  Newlywed Game, Dating Game, Dream House, Let's Make A Deal.
On NBC:  It Takes Two, Jeopardy, Eye Guess, Concentration, Personality, Hidden Faces, You Don't Say, The Match Game, Hollywood Squares
On CBS:  Nothing
On Local/Syndicated TV: Truth Or Consequences.

...your favorite game show of the bunch could be The Newlywed Game, Eye Guess or any other game which aired on that day.

Have fun!

Doesn't look like there were any prime-time games on my natal day, but it's vaguely possible that Mom had the TV tuned to NBC from 11 AM-noon, in which case she'd've encountered a pretty damn fine pairing: "The Price is Right" and "Concentration."

/CBS, are you listening?

What is now my FOX station had a block of TJW/TTD at 7:00 PM on my birth date, that might've been cool to watch.

In this market, I'm pretty sure we never got my first choice, The New $25,000 Pyramid, so I'll go with either Wheel of Fortune at 10:30am, or TPiR at 11.

This reminds me of a feature someone used to do back in the ATGS era called "What Would You Watch?" The OP would give a date, then list two shows competing in the same timeslot, before asking the title question.

11AM Price Is Right Channel 3
3PM Big Payoff Channel 8
3:30 Who Do You Trust (Johnny Carson) Channel 5

Well, this is sad.

Best as I can tell, there wasn't a single game show that aired the day I was born.  June 11, 1960 was a Saturday.  If it was Sunday, I'd at least have College Bowl and What's My Line?, and of course a weekday would have given me all sorts of options, including the Cullen-Downs combo Clay mentioned earlier.  (Actually, according to the TV Guide I have from that date, Art James was subbing for Downs on Monday the 13th.)  But on that Saturday, I've got nothing.

At this point, Pyramid had been blacked-out by...well, you finish the pun here.

I'd have to go with either TPiR or Scrabble on this one.  $ale of the Century was good, but I enjoyed word games more.

/For the record, I've never seen an episode of Blackout.  Having read the description on imdb, I don't believe I'm missing anything.  But feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

January 28, 1957 ... a frigid Monday in Chicago.

WNBQ (NBC) had Twenty-One at 8PM.

The NBC daytime schedule also carried The Price Is Right, Truth or Consequences, and Tic Tac Dough.

Of that bunch, my fave was T or C, hosted by Bob Barker.

But the classic I ended up loving the best of all, would not make its debut until a little over a year-and-a-half after I did.  I'm talkin' Concentration here.

Let's see...2-11-57.

Fair pickins ... Twenty-One at night, THe Big Payoff, The Price is Right during the day, as well as It Could Be You and Tic Tac Dough. I'd have to give the nod to Truth (BUZZ) or Consequences, a favorite of mine when I was younger.

Nowadays, what I'd really give anything to see is the morning Garry Moore Show.

Born on a Saturday as well, but I got lucky (both good and bad).  Since I was born during the NFL season, there was a College Bowl episode on that day moved from Sunday (Merrimack vs. St. Mary of the Woods).  On the bad side, prime time Newlywed and Dating Games.

Great thread, first off.

11/11/65 (Thursday)--ABC had bupkus, CBS had PASSWORD and TTTT, NBC had FRACTURED PHRASES, CONCENTRATION, J!, LET'S PLAY POST OFFICE, LMAD, YDS and MG65.  Tough call between CONCENTRATION, J! and TTTT (preferred the later variants of PASSWORD and MG to those currently on at the time).

From 10-10:30 it was a given with the first 1/2 of The Price is Right
From 10:30-11 you could watch the second 1/2 of The Price is Right or The Hollywood Squares
From 11-11:30 it was Tattletales or Wheel of Fortune
From 11:30-12 it was Knockout or Family Feud
From 12-12:30 it was The $20000 Pyramid or To Say the Least
From 12:30-1 there was The Gong Show
Then at 4:00 -- Match Game 78

Hmm...very interesting topic here. Looking up stuff on 8/3/1983, this would be mine:

(All times I'm putting are eastern although I live in the central time zone, of course.)

10am-10:30am The New $25,000 Pyramid

10:30am-11am: Sale of the Century (Child's Play would air here also)

11am-11:30am: Wheel (1st half of Price.)

11:30am-noon: the 2nd half of Price (Dream House also in this slot.)

noon-12:30pm: Family Feud

During this time, it was mainly the soaps galore period that ran roughshot.

I, like Matt and Mike, was also born on a Saturday (7/4/64), so there was nothing on that night (besides the fireworks).  I noticed that TPiR was on Friday night at 9:30 and WML (ep 15-038) was on Sunday night at 10:30.  I still can't imagine having a game show on at that time of night.  It's like finding out that the cartoons you watched growing up were actually reruns that were shown on primetime the first time around.  (yeah, I'm talking to you, Fred Flintstone!)

Since I was born on Saturday, 3/16/74, I must fast forward to Monday, 3/18.  Since I love game shows, period, here's what I would have watched, if I took a time portal to that day in El Cajon, CA:

10:00  The Joker's Wild
10:30  The $10,000 Pyramid
11:00  Gambit
11:30  Hollywood Squares
12:00  Password
12:30  Split Second
1:30    Let's Make a Deal
2:00    The Newlywed Game
3:00    The Price is Right
3:30    Match Game '74
4:00    Tattletales

Of course, PST times were slightly different from EST.

So 1972 wasn't bad, according to the helpful link to TV Tango:

10:00am: The Joker's Wild
10:30am: Concentration, The Price Is Right
11:00am: $ale of the Century, Gambit
11:30am: The Hollywood Squares
12 Noon: Jeopardy!, Password
12:30pm: The Who, What, or Where Game, Split Second
 1:30pm: Let's Make a Deal, Three on a Match
 2:00pm: The Newlywed Game
 2:30pm: The Dating Game

One presumes, however, that this schedule was not in effect Christmas Day of said year...

I'm torn as to which is my favorite; I like Jeopardy, but for whatever reason, not the Fleming version.  Same with Password; the original could be a bit dry.  And I like TPiR, but not as much as the others.

\One thing's for sure: It ain't The Dating Game...

Yes.  However, since my parents' TV from 1975 didn't have a remote and I'd be too lazy to get up and change the station, I'd stick with whatever WEWS had on at 11 AM. :-P  Alternate answer:  I've seen the 3/3/1975 NYSI and kept it off for that reason.  GSN aired it the day Jack Narz passed away.

Or seeing that the ABC shows I listed aired after 11:30 AM, I could watch Now You See It plus the ABC stuff.

Thanks for the "TV Tango" site, Tim. I checked it out and here's what I would have watched on July 2, 1962:

10:00am: Say When!! (NBC)
10:30am: Play Your Hunch (NBC)
11:00am: The Price Is Right -- Cullen version (NBC)
11:30am: Concentration (NBC)
12:00pm: Your First Impression (NBC); then a switch of the dial over to.....
12:30pm: Camouflage (ABC); I take a break until.....
2:00pm:   Password (CBS); another switch to.....
2:30pm:   Seven Keys (ABC)
3:00pm:   Queen For A Day (ABC); I switch yet again to.....
3:30pm:   To Tell The Truth (CBS)

BTW, I'd switch once more to American Bandstand at 4:00pm; and my viewing day is done.

Too bad Video Village was thrown out a month before; and the original Match Game would not show up for another six months.

Cordially,
Tammy

Nov. 1, 1955...  A day like so many others, filled with the events that alter and illuminate our times and...I was there.  Anyway...

Daytime: CBS had "Strike it Rich," "The Big Payoff" and "On Your Account."  NBC had "Feather Your Nest."  No real winners in that bunch.

Prime Time: CBS had "Name That Tune" (the George DeWitt version) and "The $64,000 Question," the last of which is my favorite, because on how many other shows could you be asked The Hal March Question(tm)?

4/6/59...gotta go with the combo that's already been mentioned, Price/Concentration.  Concentration remained one of my favorites all the way through that NBC run, though I never liked Bob Clayton as much as Hugh Downs.

Off topic a bit, the odd thing about looking at the prime time schedule for that Monday is NOT seeing a Lucy show on CBS.  At first I thought there was a mistake, and then remembered those few years between her first two shows.

After doing some digging from TVRango. here's what was on my birthday(10/23/64):

ABC had nothing on.

CBS had Password & TTTT

NBC had J! & the Match Game as well as You Don't Say.  I'd go with J! on NBC & Password over on CBS.

I was sure sone show may've aired its last episode on my birthday but I'm not sure if the TV Guide in the Trenton area where I was born actually listed it.

5/1/85 - I can't look at tvtango from work, but since it was a Wednesday, I'm going to assume that Press Your Luck aired, which would be my pick, since that was right when PYL was peaking (assuming we're going by the quality of the shows as they aired in 1985 and not today, or at any other point).

Wednesday, January 16, 1963
10:00  Say When
10:30  Play Your Hunch
11:00  Price is Right
11:30  Concentration
12:00  Your First Impression
12:30  Truth or Consequences
2:00  Password
2:30  House Party/Seven Keys
3:00  To Tell the Truth

4:00  Match Game

Given those choices, hands down the favorite would be Password.

12:30: Scrabble

Out of this lot...I really can't pick a favorite, sorry. All of them were winners, and still are. :)

For the record (not that anyone's asking), the site never gave me syndie choices. I'm pretty sure Feud and TTD aired in the 7:00 hour on WTKR, with TTD going up against TJW on WAVY (weird). I would've watched all three, alternating between TTD and TJW, the latter probably being my higher priority.

Can't get into TVTango right now... but I was born on a Sunday so it looks like it would have to be College Bowl.

At least I was born early enough in the morning to catch it.

Well I was born on July 23, 1986 in Marietta, GA.  I would have seen

Since WAGA never carried $25k Pyramid I would have seen Card Sharks, TPIR, J!, BTB85, $1M COAL

On 11 Alive, WOF, and Scrabble

USA's game show reruns

So uh, there's the obvious choice for what would be my number one, but there are a number of other good ones that were there. My birthday happened to fall during that very short period CBS was airing all four of Card Sharks, $25k Pyramid, TPIR and PYL, so I'd be tuning in to Pyramid and PYL on there. On NBC, we had my favorite GS lineup of them all, minus Classic Concentration, so any NBC game show would've also made my must see list then. Then, of course, we have the good ole' syndie offerings at night (WOF, J!, $100k Pyramid, Headline Chasers, and don't forget TTD and TJW were still clinging to life then), followed by NBC Must-See TV Thursday... which all, well, speak for themselves... ;)

/Sorry Raygor, no Ewing drama... :(

Looking at my listings on TV Tango, I got a lot to choose from. On Jan. 17th, 1985, the following game shows were on the air at the time:

Trivia Trap, Family Feud, (New) $25,000 Pyramid, Press Your Luck, Price is Right, Time Machine, $ale of the Century, Wheel of Fortune, Scrabble, Super Password, and Jeopardy!

Given that list, I'm just ready to declare All of the Above (except for Time Machine since IDK what that one was about). But looking at the primetime lineup, and given I was born at 6:03pm PST I'm going to go off the board and say Night Court since the episode was "Nuts About Harry;" a little ironic since I'd be born with what would later be diagnosed as high functioning autism (and NO, I'm NOT trying to pull a Tiller, god help me if I ever become that).

Good topic.  The Waybac Machine is set to Monday, November 26, 1962.

10:00 AM NBC, Say When!
10:30 AM NBC, Play Your Hunch
11:00 AM NBC, The Price Is Right
11:30 AM ABC, Yours for a Song, NBC, Concentration
12:00 Noon NBC, Truth or Consequences
12:30 PM NBC, Your First Impression
2:00 PM CBS, Password
2:30 PM ABC, Seven Keys
3:00 PM ABC, Queen for a Day
3:30 PM ABC, Who Do You Trust?, CBS, To Tell the Truth

7:30 PM CBS, To Tell the Truth (again)
8:00 PM CBS, I've Got a Secret
9:30 PM NBC, The Price Is Right (again)
10:30 PM CBS, Stump the Stars

For me, it would be Concentration, Password, or To Tell the Truth, but overall, what's not to like?

For me 10/01/1982:

10:00 am (11:30 local) - The New $25,000 Pyramid (CBS)
10:30 am (12:00 local) - Wheel of Fortune (NBC)
11:00 am (12:30 local) - The Price is Right (CBS)
12:00 pm ( 1:30 local) - Family Feud (ABC)
 4:00 pm (  5:30 local) - Tattletales

Child's Play aired on CBS at 10:30am. Liked watching Bill, but find children shows very non-entertaining. Plus, the old Alan Thicke music and Susan was still on WOF (unless they had started the auditions by that time)

One thing that i found odd, some how, our local CTV affiliate (Canada) would manage to have the next day's TPIR airing the previous night at 6:00 pm local time. I remember staying home from school some days and be ticked that I had already seen the show the night before when CBS ran it the following day.

Also, our US affiliates came from Bangor, Maine at the time so I don't know which shows were actually seen in my area.

Semi-related:

I always enjoyed the fact that the minute I was born, 9:52PM, "The New Bill Cosby Show" was airing that Monday night on CBS. Neat theme music, as I recall.

Thanks to TV Tango, I was able to join in on the fun (cool topic!) For 7-12-62:

ABC: Your's For a Song, Camouflage, Seven Keys, Queen For a Day, and Who Do You Trust?
CBS: Password and To Tell The Truth.
NBC: Say When, Play Your Hunch, The Price Is Right, Concentration, Your First Impression and Truth or Consequences.

/Thanks to Shokus video, I purchased an episode of Seven Keys that actually aired on 7-12-62 (it has the slate at the beginning of the episode) Cool to see what was advertised on my birthday!

I was born on a Sunday in December 1976 in a U.S. Army hospital in Landstuhl, (West) Germany, so I have no real idea what, if any, game shows would have aired on Armed Forces TV the following Monday.  Purely a guess, but it might have aired one show (probably celebrity-based) from each network on a one-month or so delay, i.e. The Hollywood Squares, Match Game '76, and The $20,000 Pyramid.

the solution is two words long: the first is 8 letters long, the second is 11 letters long (this kind of clue was also given on the show)

the solution is:
F + AMI (hooks) + GLI + AMO (hook) + N + ORE (hours) + D + DITO (finger)
FAMIGLIA MONOREDDITO (single income family)

the board on the Italian show had 36 spaces (15 pairs of prizes, 2 wilds, 2 take a prize, 2 forfeit a prize)
prizes weren't as expensive as in the American show, but both contestants received 1 million lire ($700) every game, won or lost.

Since I don't have a copy of TV Guide for my birthdate, Wednesday, 02/01/1961, I only know two facts about my birthdate in regards to game shows:

First, through a trusted source, Spike Jones was the guest that evening on I've Got a Secret.

Second, Number Please, with Bud Collyer aired for the very second day!

I often wondered why, when according to EOTVGS, Number Please was listed as premiering on January 31, 1961, which was a TUESDAY!  It was noted that the actual premiere was delayed a day, due to a televised address by President Kennedy on Monday of that week!

Let's see about November 15, 1979:

ABC
11:30 - Family Feud
12:00 - The $20,000 Pyramid (the first week after "Junior Partner Pyramid" ended, with Michael McKean, LeVar Burton and Susan Richardson playing alternating games)

CBS
10:00 - The All-New Beat the Clock
10:30 - Whew!
11:00 - The Price is Right

NBC
10:00 - Card Sharks
10:30 - Hollywood Squares (can anyone find out the celebs?)
11:00 - High Rollers
11:30 - Wheel of Fortune
12:00 - Mindreaders (put the hatchet down, Chris C.)
12:30 - Password Plus (with John Astin and Patty Duke-Astin)

And somewhere Match Game was on in syndication...

Of all of those on that list... it's a tossup between Price and High Rollers as the best show that aired that day.  HS was on its last legs at that time, so it doesn't rate as high, I would think.  All sorts of other good shows to choose from too.
