Post by: aaron sica on March 25, 2010, 04:25:25 PM
How many of you have game show ringtones and sounds, etc. on your cell phone? It's a topic I don't think has been explored yet..

Do any of you have the TPiR "ding" for an incoming text message? It's something I've thought about doing..

I've got a few ringtones:

Price car cue 252 (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQifV6m9J3A\") for generic (non-assigned) calls
Price cue 204 (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dHjT3iyXH4\") (the Phone Home Game cue) for my parents, two cuts
Price showcase "1983" (http://\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGcy9NEHuoY\")

iPhone can't import custom text messaging tones.

/If anyone wants the iPhone compatible files of the above, leave a message here.

On my old phone, I had the TPiR losing horns for texts, and the Cliffhangers yodel as a ringtone. I've thought of getting something for texts, maybe the category indicator chimes from Wheel...

My phone and PC are loaded with Goodson-Todman sfx, and it's very confusing if TPiR or FF are on TV.

I've used the Wheel 83, 89, and 92 themes for ringtones on my Blackberry for the past two years for various callers. The category chime plays for text messages.

I also use the following pic as my background image, and if you are familiar with blackberries, it just so happens the layout where the icons are positioned on the left side of your screen fit perfectly there so as to not block Susan and only just a tiny bit of the bottom left corner of the puzzle board.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c104/whe...lBonusRound.jpg (http://\"http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c104/wheelloon/WOFOriginalBonusRound.jpg\")

I've gotten a number of compliments on it, mostly from people who recognize the puzzleboard and recognize it all as Wheel, yet it not being your generic pic of Pat and Vanna standing in front of some neon set prop. Some of them reminisce for about 2 minutes about classic Wheel, but, of course, don't look close enough to see that's not Vanna who is standing at the puzzle board... not that it really matters in the end... the same effect is achieved... ;)

/No, you shouldn't be surprised.

I have the TPiR Theme for regular calls, and Treasure Hunt Loser's Theme for calls that are Private/No Caller ID.

My text sound is TPiR Losing Horns.

Post by: Sodboy13 on March 25, 2010, 05:12:42 PM
I set up one of our computers in the main area at work to play the Losing Horns every time an e-mail alert comes in.  Since those e-mails are usually telling us about a crash or road closure, it's fitting.  I also have the Cliffhangers yodel on my phone, but don't use it as a ringtone - used my phone as an audio player for a game show night.  My wife used to have the TPIR theme as her ringtone, but she's since moved on to It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

I've been thinking about using a game-show ding for incoming text, but can't decide which one.  The Family Feud Fast Money answer reveal SFX might work, too.

I've used a couple different "dings" for text messages in the past. I switched to just a single TPiR "ding" after the "ding-ding-ding" I was using got annoying. But I also ended up missing a lot of messages when I couldn't hear the one sound.

I also used to use the DoND "No Deal" cue for texts, and I've had the Whammy! "Lets play" cue for receiving emails for years.

Have the HTC Hero now, don't think there's any way to create custom text-message sounds, though.

<full geek mode ON>

Current sounds on my new Android phone:

Ringtone: the $25,000 Pyramid theme
Notification (lots of Android apps throw notifications in a bar at the top of the screen): the Wheel of Fortune new-puzzle sound
Specific Notification (for my hockey score app): the Sale of the Century Money Card fanfare
Loaded onto my phone though I have not found a good specific use for them yet: the SotC lockout, and the Jeopardy! Daily Double sound. (I'd use the lockout for text messages if the built-in Android sound "Don't Panic" wasn't so cool)

<full geek mode OF....aw, screw it, who'm I fooling, leave it ON>

Sure there is. The Messaging app lets you set a custom notification sound specific to text messages, and if you have Rings Extended installed (and you should), you're no longer limited to the pre-canned list of sounds that they give you or what you load manually into I-think-it's-Media\Notifications on the SD card.

(I also dumped the crappy stock Messaging app (on a Samsung Moment that uses stock Android; I don't know if you get a different app with Sense UI) for Handcent SMS a couple of weeks ago, and haven't looked back. Among other things, it'll let you set a custom sound for each individual contact if you want, so you can fire the TPiR lose horns when the mother-in-law texts.)

Hmmmm, I'm getting the Nuron (Nokia) phone tomorrow; but for now, let see how my Samsung Gravity 2 works out:

- Current Squeeze: Love Connection Theme (from 1998)--a very clean copy mind you!
- My mom: The TPiR Losing Horns
- Former Roommate from NIU: The opening from Jackpot 1974 (found on the forums here)
- Best Friend #1: Pilot Theme from "Wheel" 1974, "Give It One" by Maynard Ferguson
- Best Friend #2: The Theme from "Sale"

Hopefully the Nuron would be able to give way to editing texts also.

Anybody that's been around me has undoubtedly heard the FF ding whenever I get a text.  My main ringtone is the prize cue from Make The Grade.  A couple of my friends have main themes from shows (Match Game 90, He Said She Said, Wipeout, Whew) as their ringtones in my phone as well.  Fortunately my phone can play MP3s so I have them all cleaned up and turned up all the way hehe

The lockout makes for an effective alarm clock, although the sound can get annoying. But then again, so does anything that's sole purpose is to unceremoniously wake you up.

For a while I used Jeopardy! 84 as my main ringtone, and back in the day I had a polyphonic Family Feud on my first cell phone. Thanks to this topic, I'm going back through my music library to find another great 20 second excerpt.

That would be especially cool if you had a custom texting program that rendered the texts as puzzles from the game, with the person sending them as the category.  You could even play to solve to read them.

/Still contemplating whether to use it for BBM

ETA: And said tone is driving co-workers nutty. I love it! ;-)

There was a MP3 file, from back in 2001, that had the game win cue (and the match win) from Card Sharks '78. I had saved it, then a hard drive crash later, lost it. I was going to use that for the Nuron I just bought this morning.

\I'm so in love with this phone, and its only been 4 hours.

My text noise is the Wheel of Fortune Category Noise. Whenever it goes off, people always ask, "Is that your phone?"

My general response: "The category is Thing. $1,000 is the top dollar value."

Pretty much any phone can be customized.  I cut my MP3s in Audacity then email them to my phone.  <Phone Number>@vzwpix.com, then save the sound file as a ringtone.  This is on my ENV2 though.  Dunno if other phones work differently.

As for me, I've got the original Final Jeopardy, TPiR losing horns, the Grand Game cut of the Feud theme, and $25,000 Pyramid.  The only sound I use is the Pyramid clock for texts.  Gets me some odd looks.  People think my phone's going to explode... :D

This also works for the Samsung Juke. I did a little research before I got this phone to make sure I could customize the ringtones.

My main ringtone is the Price '07 theme. That started a conversation at the post office when the phone rang.

I used to think that. I realized about eight months ago that I really do use my phone more as a data device than I do an actual call-making device, even though I dropped my landline when I moved in December and it's my primary phone now. So I shopped appropriately, and as a result, Android uber alles. I figure it will carry me nicely through a year and then I can take a good hard look at Windows Phone when it ships. :)

(My point, I suppose, is that if you're getting on the "I use my phone to make calls and nothing else" kick, take a good hard look at texting habits and such and see if that's really the case, 'cuz it might not be. (And if it is, hey, bully.))

After having the same cell phone for about 5 years, I upgraded to an LG VX5500.  It has a camera and...that's about it.  I'm sure it can do a bunch of stuff, but I have no desire to pay through the nose for it, and have no desire to pay $5/month when I may text about $20 worth in a year.

I'll concede to choosing the phone because of the camera, but yeah.  The phone is a phone and will stay a phone until it seems reasonable to do otherwise.

I switch back and forth between game shows and tv shows I enjoy. Right now I have the NCIS theme. I rotate that with the Millionaire theme I edited to make it sound like the extended million dollar win cue. I also have PYL theme in a MIDI format. I wish I could change the text message tone on the iPhone since everyone has the same damn cue play and can get confusing. I'd use either the final jeopardy clue reveal or wheel of fortune puzzle unveil.

I must say, I love the looks I get when the sounds of a string quartet start emerging from the pocket of an otherwise-normal-looking twenty-something male. :)

While this thread is being bumped, I must say, my text tone (Wheel puzzle chimes) has become a little conversation starter. A few friends have heard it and said "Jeopardy!...wait, is that the one?" Gets a chuckle out of me. :-)

Meanwhile, some of my co-workers (some of which are just as nerdy as I am at times) will immediately say "It's a THING/PLACE/PERSON!"

Bumping for the iPhone users; now that iOS5 is out, you can - EVEN with a 3gs - finally do custom messaging and e-mail tones.

Looks like I need to go over the thread to see what I need to get, eh?

Lucky you.  Outside of jailbreaking it, the iPad doesn't allow such customization with iOS 5.

Au contraire, sir.  I just tried this (http://"http://gigaom.com/apple/free-custom-iphone-ringtones-using-only-itunes/") on my iPad 2, and it worked like a charm.

EDIT: Hmm, I apparently had the wrong link in there.  My bad.
