Given that GSN was mainly classics in its first five years, what is your favorite period of the last ten years?
I would say '02 and into '03 when the line-up was about 40% original and 60% percent classics under Bob Boden.
I also liked '06 into '07 when the network had a full slate of G/T classics along with originals like 'I've Got A Secret,' 'Thats The Question', and 'Grand Slam.'

'02 into '03 was great. Good originals, and Great classics.
Late '07 into '08 was great as well. We had the return of some rare G-T shows, that great Viewer's Choice Marathon, and then the return of Tic Tac Dough and Wheel of Fortune to the schedule. The originals weren't as good, though. Anyone remember that mess "How Much is Enough"? But the classics made up for that department.

Although I got GSN in 1997, for me, it would be any year that wasn't 2004 and 2009.

I got GSN in 2002, so it's a sentimental favorite to me. On its own merit, it ranks right up there because of the Golden Pyramid Awards and Vertivision, which included Pyramid Thursdays, the only time I ever saw them air the 10K. 2007-08 was good for the Sunday night (early Monday) classic, Now You See It and Double Dare.

Honestly, I'd say 1998-2003. More classics, and even the worst originals seemed to be offset by more classics.
I first got it in May 2002. You had classics, then that summer they did morning and evening marathons of a few 70s and 80s classics. I loved coming home from work to catch the originals (mainly Russian Roulette and Whammy). Rediscovering the Marshall Hollywood Squares was icing on the cake, not to mention the Feast of Favorites that Thanksgiving.
However, 2001 was pretty good as well. It was right after they experimented with that awful DJ Games, but they made up for it by putting CBS TJW, and a few childhood favorites such as Super Password and Eubanks Card Sharks.
They did squeeze the credits at that point, but it was only for about 20 seconds, so you still heard a fair portion of the closing theme.

I thought for a minute this was a thread saying that GSN has joined The Weather Channel in showing movies.

Post-1997 it would have to be 2002 because the debut of Classic HSQ on GSN was a major event, as this show had been considered all but lost but for the handful of original broadcast recordings we had circulating. We also never believed in our wildest imagination that most of the 1968 NBC primetime shows still existed let alone would be aired.
B/W Overnight was also humming along at that point in time with the first airings of cigarette sponsored TTTT and IGAS, opening up areas that not even the pre-1998 golden age had tapped.

Would a movie about the behind-the-scenes workings of a live TV show of the '50's fit in with the desired GSN audience? :)

They'd have to dig up something with either Carnie or Alfonso in it for it to connect with their desired demographic.

I have fond memories of getting GSN right around the time where they had lots of mid-'70s panel shows on the daytime schedule (Moore TTTT, Blyden WML, etc.). Those were great to see. Anytime that GSN was running Joker's Wild was also a good point. Those Vertivision blocks, and the Breakfast with the Stars stunts, those were really neat too.
I never had GSN during the dark period, but that was certainly a good time for us fans of the classics, as a lot of shows saw the light of day then. My tape-trading activity skyrocketed that year.

I only had GSN from October 2001 to October 2002, but since 2002 seems to be a consensus pick here, I'll just go with it;).

1998, when I first got it (this would be probably right after the Dark Period). Originals were principally interstitials (and the half hour ones were far fewer, so I could easily avoid them). Plus for me it was great to see GONG again.

My favorite year on GSN was any year I had tape rolling... except for those tapes with 'Burt Luddin' on them.

1997. We just got Dish Network in September of that year and I remember being excited looking through the program guide after school and seeing different shows I haven't seen since I was very young (namely 80s episodes of TTD and Dawson Feud). Instantly loved the 70's Price episodes, the Pyramids (another childhood favorite), and the stuff that premiered during the Dark Period, my favorites being The Gong Show and Treasure Hunt.

I've had GSN since 2003. I'd have to say the 2006 - 07 year is the one I liked best, the 2007 - 08 year a close second. GSN had the most variety of originals and classics during this time.

I haven't been watching that long, but I'll say any year that wasn't 2009. If I have to be specific, I'll say 2007.

Looking back, definitely 1997-1998.
Compared to today's GSN programming, that period wasn't so "dark" now was it? Sure it had excessive Newlywed Game and Dating Game repeats, but seriously, we'll probably never see more than 80% of those shows broadcast on GSN ever again.

2009 was for me a terrible year period. But not just because of the programming:
It was also because of the technical problems that began in May of this year. I know that no network is perfect, and GSN has had those kinds of problems before, but does it really have to take like 90 FREAKIN' YEARS for GSN to fix them? Their initial claim was that they were relocating the production facilities for GSN Live, but even after the transition ended, the problems continued like no tomorrow, and I immediately called B.S.
Off-topic, but I can think of several channels that, in my opinion, are better than GSN as of right now:
ESPN Classic (they even show Sports Challenge and the original American Gladiators)
Turner Classic Movies (Have been playing classic movies in their original form for 15 years, and show no signs of stopping that)
Pretty much all of the HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, and TMC channels
All of the channels in the Starz/Encore package
Fox Movie Channel
