Title: Pilot for Remake of Double Dare (70's) casting
Post by: xavier45 on January 13, 2009, 12:49:38 PM
Interesting bit out of Craigslist showing a Contestant call for a remake of Double Dare (70's). They are looking for Really smart people to be the Spoilers and looking for either Teens or Adults to be the Regular Contestants. We'll have to see if this goes anywhere.

Just as interesting will be if Viacom will threaten to sue Fremantle for the name, even though G-T's "Double Dare" came first. Search "Ghost Busters" and you'll find a precedent.

I don't see why.  GSN has run the G-T show for the past year or so without incident.  Titles cannot be copyrighted.  Fremantle also used the title of an old H-Q show for one of their recent syndicated efforts.

The listing very specifically does NOT include the name of the show, though it's pretty obvious they're talking about Double Dare.  My feeling is that the remake would change the name anyway.  To the general public, a Trebek-hosted show called Double Dare means nothing, whereas a lot of people could be confused when they tune in to a show called Double Dare and don't see green slime.  If they're smart (HA!), Fremantle will make any threat of a lawsuit moot.

/Lawsuit moot.  That's fun to say!

I'm just glad to see someone is trying it again after all these years, even if the title has been hijacked.  Remember, though, that Mark Phillips revived It Takes Two despite the fact that between the two game show telecasts, there was a sitcom of the name name with Richard Crenna and Patty Duke.  Plus, there were two different NBC sitcoms titled The Good Life, and Happy Days was used in 1970 as the title of a variety series recalling the 1930s.

Let's Make A Deal, on the other hand, eventually took to using a circled R it its on-screen title.

Wonder what the theme music of the new DD will be, though?

Have we forgotten Christmas already??? The new show will pass on the "Double Dare" moniker and go right to the new title:

Triple Dog Dare!!!

BTW, looks like that Craigslist audition call has been pulled.

Though they can be trademarked, like what it was done with "Let's Make a Deal". Did G-T or Viacom ever trademark 'Double Dare"?

I don't know.  Not sure about "Rugrats" either :). Anyway, isn't the Viacom DD just a "Choose Up Sides/Beat the Clock" ripoff of G-T in the first place? Both parties could make a case.

I would venture to say that one of the titles that would at least be considered, if not make the final cut would be: Blind Item, since it is often a popular Internet message board game using a very similar premise.

I believe the complete title was "Temptation: The New Sale of the Century".

That's one of my favorites, too. Everything was perfect about that show: host, hostess, announcer, concept, gameplay, music, set (except maybe the stairs).  Could that ever be duplicated or is it best to keep it as a great memory?

It depends on one and only one question...
Does Fremantle have the rights to the show's concept???

When I first saw the Trebek Double Dare on GSN almost 12 years ago, I had the same reaction.  When the GSN voiceover would say to "Join Alex Trebek before he became known for Jeopardy! on Double Dare", I had thought that maybe he was the original host of the Nick version.

Which is funny, because when I saw the syndicated show in my TV listings in the late '80s, I said "oooh, Spoilers!" I was disappointed when I found out it was a kids game.
