I know that this isn't the silliest question that this forum has seen, but I really don't understand what the "dark period" of GSN means. I read it here all the time, but I just don't get it. I always went with the flow when somebody mentions it (Thom McKee's thread is the most recent), but can somebody please explain it to me (and anybody else who is clueless)?

The "dark period" is when they lost the rights to the Goodson library, save for TPIR and Feud '94 (I think).

No, I'm pretty sure they didn't have those either. (Not ENTIRELY sure, but pretty sure. I got in JUST on the other side of the Dark Period when I moved here.)

They did, because TPIR and Feud '94 are apart of a seperate contract from the other Goodson-Todman game shows. As bad as not having the traditional G-T shows was, I'm sure it would've been nice to see some forgotten favorites for a time.

...which doesn't mean they still had them. (They may have, but just because they're negotiated separately now doesn't mean they were then.)

They did indeed have those two shows. They had Price from 1996 to 2000. Barker was on every day, Kennedy and Cullen had weekend slots during the "dark period." As far as Feud '94 went...well, some form of Feud was better than none at all. To this day, Feud and J! are the only two shows that have aired on GSN continuously from the time it launched to the present.

Kennedy TPIR I remember not being on the schedule at the beginning of the DP and then it came back around January of 98 on Sunday afternoons. Cullen TPIR was part of the weekend overnight bloc of Cullen shows but it and Pass The Buck disappeared around December when GSN put their first infomercials on. I can't remember if TPIR was in another slot before the return of the rest of G-T when it was placed in the B/W Sunday night bloc with two airings.

To be REALLY precise, the DP began at the stroke of midnight on Saturday, October 11, 1997 with an episode of "The Gong Show. It ended a little more than six months later on Saturday, April 18, 1998 with an episode of "Child's Play".
IMHO, one of the few good things about the DP was that $20K Pyramid got some air time...
It was quite the interesting time once the dark period's clouds began to lift - GSN started running promos for shows like "Card Sharks" and "Match Game" on April 1, prompting people to post to a.t.g-s where their claims about the commercials were laughed at, being that it was April 1.

Oh, I think looking back, we can see a LOT of good things that came out of the Dark Period. What made it dark was the prospect at the time that we'd never seeing the bigger, more famous and more popular shows again. But a lot of the really weird stuff they DID air, especially that goofy Match Game ripoff Jim Lange hosted, we probably weren't likely to see any other way.

Actually, the very first item in the Dark Period was "Ruckus" appearing where "Password" should have been that night. And that along with the new exposure to "Three's A Crowd" which beget the bad GSN revival, were for me the worst things the Dark Period gave us.
OTOH, we did get a full pass through all the episodes of "Go!", which has never been seen since. And we got the most exposure we'll sadly ever see of 20K Pyramid, "Break The Bank", "Pass The Buck" and original "Chain Reaction."
