The box art interestingly uses the ABC era logo on the side.

Sure they do. It's the most eye-catching and recognizable of the logos they used.

It would be nice if the set was focused on the 70's Password era, but I'm pretty certain I know better.

I think the box art looks nice!  Maybe there'll be an ABC era episode on there.  Wonder if Betty White will be doing any commentaries or anything for this set?

We can always cross our fingers for something out of the ordinary, but conventional wisdom is that there aren't any more than a tiny handful of 70s episodes even available.  Further, for all the props we should be giving BCI for doing these sets in the first place, it doesn't appear that they're trying really hard to uncover anything that would knock our socks off.

Still, as long as we're asking, the final episode of Password All-Stars is probably one of my favorite single episodes of a game show ever, and the combination of Betty White, Richard Dawson, Bill Bixby and Hal Linden isn't bad as far as star-power goes.  Collectors have it, so it has to be in somebody's vault.

Off topic, but I also noticed on the page an ad for a 10th-anniversary release of the entire series of SportsNight.  The original boxed set was the first TV series I ever bought on DVD, and it doesn't seem that long ago.  One disc hasn't even been opened.  That one didn't have any features, the new one has tons.  This is how they get you, isn't it?

I'm giving them props for actually remembering (it seems) that Password actually began before 1979.  If the DVD set was just those early eps, that would be absolutely awesome in my book.

Agreed.  I'm happy that these game show sets are being produced - but it would be nice for one rarity in each package (such as one of the existing ABC episodes GSN didn't air!), but even if that doesn't occur, I'll definately pick this one up.

That's something I've wondered about for years.  We know that some of the episodes in the trade curcuit come from early VCR copies, but there are a number of shows out there that seem to be from studio masters.  One example is the final episode of The Better Sex, or probably that Showoffs episode that's been floating around.  I guess we don't know for sure that GSN doesn't have them, but you'd think they would have aired them by now if they did.  One of The Better Sex episodes they've aired on multiple occasions.  Seems strange if they have others sitting there.

It's a completely different studio releasing the new set. Buena Vista did the original DVD set ages go, in TV DVD's infancy.  The new DVDs are being done by Shout! Factory, and while I don't have my DVD review for it done yet, I can definitely say it's an absolutely awesome DVD set. If you like the show enough to own the DVD set, my advice would be to unload the old set and get the new one - it's light years better.

Oh yeah. I'm still a little chafed that Clerks, one of the very first DVD's I owned and really pretty feature-rich in its own right, came out with an up-the-bucket three-disc release to celebrate the 10th anniversary.

Sure, and it's less than a buck an episode. I was more weighing the overall expenditure of $40, though. $60 or $70 would have been a lot to consider, especially considering NHL 09 and Rock Band 2 both came out this week and I'm going on vacation to CA second week of October. $40, somewhat less so.

You'd be surprised what REAL collectors -- those that have 16mm prints and original (or pretty close to it) studio masters -- might have in their attics and garages.  Remember that before GSN, even before home video, hardly anybody saw an aftermarket for any of those old shows.  A staffer or a VERY well-connected fan might easily have found access to video that networks and producers didn't think at the time was any big deal.   Probably didn't happen a lot, but that's one possible explanation for some of those studio masters that have ended up in circulation without necessarily showing up on GSN.

Hi Chad - I've got a Password question for you...

Did everyone who was at the studio that day that you were taping get to play?  I remember reading that at Weakest Link, not everyone got on.  However, when I was at Wheel they specifically brought in two alternates.

If you're not allowed to say anything in disclosure, no problem.

(And OT: I stayed in a Super 8 this spring in Flint, it was quite nice).

Cheers

Ryan.

Buena Vista didn't even want to release a DVD set of SportsNight, from what I've read -- I believe Aaron Sorkin had gotten it into his contract or something, and made them do it.  They drew the line at features, however, and I'm pretty sure that the Disney folks were shocked with that box set became a huge seller (relative to the show's ratings, which were never good).

That aside, I'm with Matt -- this is exactly how they get you.  If it's not this, it's sticking every season into a big honking monster box set, throwing in a few things not on the original single-season releases, and putting it back out again.  If you haven't bought any of the single-season releases, it's a bargain, otherwise it's a huge chunk of change to buy a set of DVDs where you own 97 percent of what's on them already.  And I'd love to unload the old SportsNight set, but who's gonna buy one without these extra features at this point?

The one thing I can recommend is, if you've got patience, wait a bit.  Prices on most DVDs, whether they're single-disk movies or box sets, usually drop a bit after they've been on the market for six months (yes, that same DVD that was $19.99 at Target nine months ago is now about half that, right?).  The exception seems to be the Disney animated classics, which are constantly in and out of print -- those you might as well get first week of release.

(Rant mode off.)

Wife and I stayed at the Super 8 in Kent for part of our Honeymoon (1992) to the Now-Former Sea World/Ohio and the old Geauga Lake Amusement Park..We thought it was pretty nice.  Incidentally, we spent some time at the Old Delphian Inn in New Philly later that week while visiting some friends.  It was being converted into a Days Inn then-Torn Down now, from what I hear..

Sounds like some daytime color episodes will likely be included.  It will be interesting to see if they're the full-length versions, or the edited for syndication versions GSN has aired.

Does anyone know if the full-length versions of the color season still exist, or are the edits all there is?

I believe all of the color daytime episodes are edited down permanently and that the cut footage was discarded way back when.    Full length B/W kinescopes exist for some of the episodes (and for the 1967 color nighttime shows which were also cut-down for the syndication package) but not in original color.

OK, step two is to find out if there's anything on here that GSN hasn't already aired.  I don't mean that facetiously, I assume most of it has been seen on the network.  But even if there are only one or two that haven't, that would turn this into an extra-special treat.  At this point, that's probably the determining factor for me, since they managed to avoid using any of Cullen's shows.  (My hope was that they'd include his appearance with Jane Fonda, but they used a different Fonda show instead.)

This is not the complete "Ten Stars" week.    They've left out the Thursday show of that week which was Donna Douglas and Steven Hill from "Mission: Impossible" (the original leader of the group).     The episode they included with Douglas is from two weeks later where she dropped in unexpectedly as a surprise to Irene Ryan and played as a regular contestant.

And only the Benny show never aired on GSN.    The rest have all been on in the past.

Not necessarily.  BCI doesn't always tend to pick episodes based on what WE would think of as their "historic" value (though they sorta did with the TPIR set).  Betty White and Frank Gifford faced off many times, and if BCI found an episode they liked better than the finale, they probably wouldn't have any problem choosing it.

Got my copy and they put the episode title numbers on the back.   The White-Gifford show is billed as N-200 which would imply the last color nighttime show from the 67 revival but my records say that the last night show, #200 was Barbara Rush-Noel Harrison and that White-Gifford's only 67 night episode was #192.

I've watched the first three now, and no ... they seem to be uncut.  Although Allen might go into a break with something along the lines of "...after this word from the good people at Woolite", the commercials are not on the disc.

There's a half-second (or so) of black in between segments.

Got mine today.  I've watched the first (nighttime) episode, with Carol Burnett and Garry Moore.  Great stuff.

I have watched about five of the nighttime episodes on the first disc, and they do look uncut to me. The ones I have seen also include the production slates, audience ticket plugs mentioned by Allen Ludden, and in one episode, he even involves celebrity guest Anne Bancroft and her contestant partner in an on-set commercial spot for Polaroid cameras.

By the way, I purchased my copy at J&R Music World in lower Manhattan yesterday (Tuesday 12/2/2008) for $27.99 plus NYS tax. Right away, I noticed the packaging on this box set is slimmer than the previous titles released by BCI/Eclipse.

One quick question...the Benny episode was taped in Los Angeles?

2 Questions

1) Is the shows' original aspect ratio intact?

2) How's the bitrate? Does it match up to the speed of videotape? Catnap72 complained a while back how horribly lagging the bitrate was on a few episodes of the Family Feud DVD.

/Hate cropped aspect ratios on DVDs.
//Who doesn't?

There's actually 2 Polaroid spots--one with Anne Bancroft and the other with Joan Crawford.

It looks like the color episodes on disc 4 have been chopped up sadly. Other than that, its a solid set so far. I can't wait to look at discs 2 and 3.

Well, the chopped color episodes are something nobody has control over.  All that exist are the late 60s syndication prints that were edited to fit in more commercials.

It lags a LITTLE, but it's nowhere near as brutal as the "Feud" set.

An interesting coincidence, connected with the Password set.  This evening, I'm watching an episode from Disc Two ... the one with Carol Burnett and Robert Preston.  Carol's civilian partner is introduced as Gary Justice, from Neosho, Missouri.

At a radio station here in KC, I used to work with a guy by the last name of Justice ... and I seemed to remember him saying he was from southwestern Missouri.  Furthermore, this Gary guy, from the 1964 Password episode, sortof resembles my buddy if I squint just right.  So I send an email.

He quickly replies that Gary is his dad!  At the time, he was a student at Yale divinity and he answered an ad to be a contestant.  Not sure, yet, whether my friend is aware that his dad's appearance is available on DVD.  I've emailed him to let him know.  (A great gift idea, eh?)

I have to admit, looking at a couple B/W episodes in the set, the picture quality is incredibly not as good as what I've been used to seeing on GSN.   The image looks much softer to the point where it looks closer to a "kinescope" quality than the sharper videotape look I've been used to seeing.

Bumping this a bit... I just got the set on Friday (12/26).  I just wanted to know if this problem is universal or isolated.

Seems as if this set suffers from the same problem some of the episodes on the Family Feud set had... the video is progressive rather than interlaced, giving the video a very bad film-esque look.  Either that, or the framerate is off.

Anyone else having this problem?

Same problems here Nick. It's a disk problem. But, I'm able to look past it and enjoy it. Probably because it's in B/W to begin with makes it look old along with the framerate stuff.
Did anyone else notice the Fremantle logo even has the video problems at the end?

Believe me, I'm not either, haha. I just didn't mind the small issues. However, I hate to say it, some of it has to do with the content too. Not a lot of people want to buy a DVD set of 30 game show episodes. As happy as I was to see game show sets come out on DVD, I knew they wouldn't sell well. Unfortunately, sounds like I was right.

I'm a little unclear on if Navarre is just shutting the label and continuing the releases.  One thing I noticed when I was watching the Match Game episodes with friends who are "normal" is that they wondered why stuff like slates, fee plugs, etc. were left in.  They also didn't find the show as funny as I thought it was.

From a technical standpoint, it should very much be pointed out and not ignored that this has happened twice now.  They shouldn't be releasing product to an already saturated market with a progressive/interlaced problem such as this.  You would think they'd get the hint since the source was videotape to make sure it maintains that look.  I've even noticed on some of the episodes because of this problem, that the camera switches are akin to off-lock and look absolutely abysmal.

It's poor production values, plain and simple.  I take extra care in my work at least to make sure that any product that I put out looks the best it can.

I will assume, however, that there may have been other factors as to why they went under (see: economy, United States).  Agreed that the sets probably didn't sell well, but, I won't assume that unless I have access to actual sales figures for bona fide proof that was indeed the case.

I have to play the skeptic here to some degree.

However, don't get me wrong, I enjoy just having the episodes, but I can't believe they called themselves a DVD company without knowing when and when not to use progressive as opposed to interlaced.

Looking over the "CBS Stars" DVD (Disc 4).  I saw what should be a glaring error to most of us on the menus..

Every Show in the "CBS Stars" week had a 1967 airdate attatched. (November on most of them)..The Bea Benederet-Eddie Albert Show had an "airdate" of 11-25-67.   .That has to be wrong because Allen asked about season-opening episodes of Green Acres and Petticoat Junction.  Miss Benederet started missing Petticoat Junction Episodes late in 1967 and probably wouldnt have been well enough to do many TV appeaances.

Daytime Password was canceled September 15, 1967..Also, on the Carole Welles-Bob Denver episode,  Allen talks up Miss Welles' show "Pistols and Petticoats" which  had barely premiered in Sept. 1966..In large part because of Ann Sheridan's passing, "Pistols" only  lasted a season (26 episodes) and would have been off by fall 1967..Just wondering with these and the already pointed-out technical and spelling errors.  How much might be wrong with this set..Though the little I've seen thus far actually looks good..

They aren't the original show slates.  The late 1967 slates were tacked on by the company that did the editing on the color episodes that were going to be packaged for syndication (If I recall correctly, the date given is the date the syndie [edited] tape master was created).   Which to me is quite interesting, because it indicates that the syndication idea came about **very shortly** after the end of the show's network run...  Of course, given the horrendous decimation of scheduled airtime that G-T had experienced in that year, it's not too surprising that they'd try whatever they could to get back up and running.

Password reruns went into almost immediate syndication.  There was a blurb in the August 26. 1967 issue of TV Guide (New York Metropolitan Edition) that Channel 11 would be airing Password starting Sept. 23, 1967.  This blurb appeared while the show was still on CBS, so for New Yorkers, Password was off for a only a week between CBS and WPIX.

In Chicago, WFLD (Ch. 32) carried the reruns on weeknights, right before The Honeymooners.  Even though I was only ten years old, I was rolling my eyes over how poor the editing was.  It was almost as if someone used a hatchet and some Scotch Tape to slap the ends together.

Seeing them again, on the DVD, I'm still in awe.

Keeping in mind this is  New York in 1962, Johnny's partner is a young woman who works as a secretary at an advertising agency who also does some copywriting. Its gets stranger later on when Allen says the male celebrity on this weeks daytime 'Password' is 'Mad Men' cast member Robert Morse.

I just started to watch the DVD this week. On disc one, there is an episode featuring Anne Bancroft and Robert Goulet. Elsewhere on the page, though, Amazon thought I might be interested in this: The Internet Password Manager (http://\"http://www.amazon.com/Internet-Password-Organizer-Innovention-Lab/dp/0615164706/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1236175645&sr=8-13\")

It's a freakin' spiral notebook.

DeepDiscount may have the lead on price, but Amazon takes the "amusing alternate item" cake.

Try EBay. That's where I bought mine for for less than $15 including shipping.

The password is "bargain." Ding!

Some thoughts after seeing Disc 1 (I'm geting them thru Netflix, and we're getting 1 disc at a time)...

1. C'mon, give them some small points for doing the recreation of the original Password set for the menu, instead of just some generic picture of Allen Ludden and a place to click.

2. I wonder if James Mason ever recovered from the beating he took at the hands of the female contestant.

3. I did catch Anne Bancroft spelling out C-O-Z-Y in signlanguage, but wasnt' sure what she was spelling.

4. The sound effects sounded strange on the Benny ep. Just a bad recording, or something having to do with that being taped in Los Angeles?

Oh, and retro maven James Lileks has some funny comments about the whole thing here. (http://\"http://lileks.com/bleat/?p=1258\")

This, right here, is a fantastic idea that I had never thought of. I'm not one to buy these DVD sets because I would watch them once and then they would sit. But Netflix, that's a great idea.

/the "watch instantly" feature with this would be the bee's knees
//looks like most of the recent DVD sets are on Netflix, where have I been

I've been lovin' the Lileks blog for years.  Check out his collection of matchbook covers, motel postcards, and old-school restaurants.  His commentary is priceless.

Bad video transfer of the CBS-TV City tape-- though it appears there may have been a generic alignment problem in the TV City machine that was used back in '62.  There are a couple of other Password eps taped during the same Hollywood stay that have exactly the same problem, which is why none of them have ever aired on GSN.

Although the transfer techs **were** trying to blast through these as quickly as they could back when copies were being struck for GSN & Goodson-Todman, I'm not certain if this sort of misalignment fault is (readily) correctable.

I used to ride my bike home at lunch, make a sandwich and chocolate milk and sit and watch this, then go back to school. Might have to get this!

From what I call The Desilu Episode, my thoughts:
* Lucille Ball (I found myself afraid of her)
* Gary Morton (looked like he was really enjoying himself)
* Lucie Arnaz (what up with all the close-ups?)
* Desi Arnaz Jr. (never seen him that young before)
And the announcer was Bern Bennett!!!

As much as I wish I had time to read all these pages of posts, I don't.  So if I'm asking an already answered question, please forgive me.  But can anyone tell me if the DVD set will have an answer blackout capability, so that we at home can play along?  Thanks.

There were no options to "blackout" words, but for me the play-along factor of coming up with the perfect clues is enough to make the episodes enjoyable!  Just thinking about this idea, though, it would have been possible to create a second audio track where the announcement of the words could be muted.  Then a opaque rectangular subtitle could have been added over the password to block it from view.  The tradeoff would be that the audio track would take more real estate on the disc, and we wouldn't get as many classic episodes to enjoy.

Some DVD players have the ability to zoom in the picture, so that may be an option.  Maybe try changing the aspect ratio on the TV monitor to cutoff the bottom of the screen.

Of course, you'd have to hit the mute button when you see Allen stretch out his hand.

That's an interesting idea, but it would have required BCI to put forth far far more effort than they were willing to.
