Title: Allen Ludden's death
Post by: Julius on June 30, 2008, 08:31:40 PM
If anyone watched the original NBC broadcasts of Password plus episodes from June 8th-July 31, 1981, Was there any mention in one of the episodes announcing the death of Allen Ludden?

No, there was never a mention of Allen's death, except that Tom said on the finale "I just wish my friend Allen Ludden was here" or something like that. Not sure why it was never mentioned.

I'm pretty sure the broadcasts from October 1980 had someone at NBC doing a voiceover, "This broadcast of Password Plus was videotaped before Allen Ludden's recent illness.  We all wish him a speedy recovery."

By the time June of 1981 had rolled around, Allen had been pretty much out of action for nine months, and it seemed pretty obvious he wasn't going to come back.  It had become Kennedy's show, so mentioning his death may have seemed unnecessary.

ISTR that we taped two on-camera announcements with T.K. One acknowledged Allen's "recent illness" and wished him a speedy recovery, and I think it actually aired (we never watched the show in the office). The other expressed sadness over his recent passing. As Curt said, by June 1981 it had lost its timeliness. I was gone by then so I'm not qualified to answer.

The irony is that Richard Dawson set aside the last segment of a "Family Feud" to note Allen's passing and pay tribute to him.

It seemed that Richard always got along well with Betty White, which makes me think was the reason he paid tribute to Allen, although probably not the only reason, but a little different since Allen wasn't affiliated with FF. Just thought of it because it seemed that the other regulars on MG didn't seem to get along too well when Richard starting to want to leave, but Richard and Betty got along great even during other shows and FF94 specials.

I don't know of anybody who didn't get along well with Betty White.

I kind of get the idea that Richard wasn't best drinking buddies with Brett, Charles, and Gene, but got along well enough with them until the last six months or so he was on MG.  No evidence to support this, of course.

A number of people from 'Feud', like Howard Felsher, Cathy Hughart, Gene Wood and doubtless more from ABC, were associated with Allen through the networks 'Password.' Richards career in game shows is pretty well represented on GSN with the notable exception of 'Password.'
