Title: I can't believe it's 25 years. . .
Post by: SRIV94 on January 03, 2008, 10:21:01 AM
1/3/83.

NBC re-enters the game show business, as $otC, HIT MAN and JUST MEN join WoF in NBC's daytime line-up.

Statute of limitations is up, so now it can be told.  I feigned illness from the first day back of my last semester at high school so I could check them out.  (Within a month, we had our first VCR so I didn't have to do that anymore--shame I didn't save those initial tapes I made.)

As the thread title says, can't believe it was 25 years ago today.

I didn't feign illness, but we did get our first VCR for Christmas 1982.  I recorded the first "Sale of the Century" (didn't keep it though), but didn't get the others since our first tape was a rare 30-minute tape, rather than the standard T-120s.  Around that time you could also buy T-60s too.

Christmas break was extended for this 2nd grader as we got snow dumped on (I lived right around the PA/NY state line at the time)...no need to feign illness. But a banner day, as I remember..:)

That pretty much sums it up for me too.  Couple things by way of explanation:

Mike Knapp was an early QuizBusters player.  The references to "Don't step on the Q" gives that away.  In the early years of the show, we had a large letter Q on the floor of the set, made from some material that looked really good on camera but got dirty very easily.  So as the players and audience entered the studio, the floor director would constantly remind them not to step on the Q.  The winning team members at the end of each season got to have their picture taken standing on the Q, which turned out to be a remarkably big deal for many of them.  For at least the last decade or so, the logo on the floor is a lighting effect, so Knapp must have been old-school QB, raising the question of how long that page has been sitting there in the first place.

But hey, thanks for turning this into my favorite thread EVER.

Two more?  Okay.

Chain Reaction was originally the showcase of Matt Ottinger's Formula of Game Shows: HOFe + MnO -> FeO + MnOttsGonnaBeatU.  Only when the formula was found to cause a chain reaction of game show winnings shifting to Matt's pocket was when the format changed.

Matt Ottinger and Bill Cullen walked into a game show studio.  The studio collapsed as it couldn't contain the level of awesomeness of those two men.

The scat singing heard in the theme to "All Star Blitz" was actually the reaction the singer had when he saw Matt Ottinger waiting outside the recording studio for him -- all because the singer never paid back the 5 cents Matt loaned him for getting a Pepsi in the vending machine 3 days before!
