On old tapes I have and watch from the older GSN days (Around 1999-2000 range,) I see a lot of ads for this GSN original show named "As Seen On...". What was the show about? I've never heard of it before.

Various clips of shows then in the GSN library were played. You've probably seen the clips on other shows.

Alright, thanks. Two more questions. In one of the ads, I saw these two guys talking about random clips. I'm guessing they were the hosts? And, was the show any good?

Sounds like it...from what I remember, they picked clips from the "GSN Vault". It was mediocre for the most part.

The two hosts were "The Vault Guys". A promo for the show featured "GSN Trading Cards", and a "tied-up" Bob Eubanks.
The ending was GSN current schedule at the time--with the name of the show/times with that show's 'slide' behind it.

More specifically, two young comedians (Greg Baker and Matthew Parrott) played "the vault guys," fictional game show fans in charge of watching over the vast GSN library. Each show, they would present some of the interesting and unusual clips they "discovered" in the vaults. Mostly they showed unusual celebrity appearances, but certainly nothing amazingly rare.
This was one of several misguided low-budget attempts by GSN in the late 90s to "do something" with their library rather than just show us the programs. Another was "Faux Pause," where two hosts would screen an episode from a short-lived or forgotten show and make fun of it. I've always seen this program as the earliest evidence that the powers-that-be at GSN (at the time) were ashamed of their own programming.

Sounds remarkably similar to ESPN Classic's Cheap Seats. I'm guessing though that As Seen On didn't do any MST3k riffing, since Faux Pause did it. That actually sounds kind of interesting.

Yeah, I've seen Faux Pause. That's an...um..."interesting" program. It seems a lot of the late 90's GSN originals heavily missed the mark. Burt Luddin's Love Buffet, anyone?
Thanks for the info, everyone. The show sounds kind of interesting. Surprised GSN has never reran their older originals before. I can imagine them doing it for cheap programming repeats.

Cheap Seats has a lot more in common with Faux Pause than with The Vault Guys, but yeah, the idea is about the same.

Well yeah. I meant as in the whole story behind them being "Vault Guys", which is kind of similar to what Randy and Jason were at the ESPN Vault, or whatever it was named (I haven't watched in forever. I wonder if it's even still on...).

At the time, they also did on Saturday nights an "As Seen On Theater" where the full-length versions of some of the shows clipped were featured. One hour at 2 a.m. ET, IIRC.
In addition to the celeb appearances, the show also did those wacky "Feud" answers that every other game show clip show has now run into the ground. Well, they didn't have "turkey."

Of course, where As Seen On had As Seen On Theater, Faux Pause had the oh-so-creatively titled "Faux Pause Picks", which were usually, if memory serves, the full episodes of shows, with no commentary whatsoever. Usually 2 episodes of a show per airing, IIRC.

Yes, big and erudite students of the genre they were. This was proven as they set up a clip from the original version of The Price Is Right claiming that "host Bob Barker" was about to do something entertaining. Bob Barker sure looked and sounded a lot like Bill Cullen in that clip.

For a while, that was followed by Faux Pause Picks, where they'd pick a show they felt worthy of a "faux pause" from their library and show it in its entirety. Some of the shows featured were Double Talk, Trebek's Double Dare, and the long-forgotten All-About the Opposite Sex.
I didn't mind it...at least at that time they tried to do something with that vast library. They don't make a lot of attempts to do so today.

I always vaguely remembered looking forward to Faux Pause, but I couldn't recall why, given the popular opinion. Now I remember, it was because of Faux Pause Picks. In addition to these selections, I also remember FPP showing an episode or two of the original Chuck Barris Camouflage, which was a rare treat.

I remember that there were actually some very funny moments on the ep where they lampooned Pass The Buck...I know I have that one somewhere.
