Title: WNBC ranks Top 20 GS Hosts
Post by: WhammyPower on January 18, 2007, 09:54:32 PM
#16-14 came as a surprise, along with the picture for #10.

This list obviously doesn't have too much more than entertainment value, but I'm still scratching my head.

I'm not going to say that #19 is the greatest ever, but I will say he added the right amount of charm and smarm © to his shows. #16 and 14 being above him is interesting, to say the very least. Would love to know how they ranked some of these hosts from just one show, and I'm not talking about Sajak.

/ESPECIALLY 14.

WNBC has a slideshow, WCBS has one.  Time for WABC to step up to the plate.

Cullen got snubbed but #s 7, 14, and 16 made that list?  (Consider the source?)

Then you are putting more thought into the list than the list authors did.

It was pretty patently obvious that the list was selected not on the merit of its members but on the ability of the writers to think up those pithy lines underneath their names.

Mike Adamle is #16?
Therefore, American Gladiators is a game show in their view.
But of course! John Harlan was the announcer.
Did I flip through The Terrific Twenty too quickly or is Bill Cullen nowhere in WNBC's crack-induced ranking?

ADDED AFTER READING MIKE's AND CHRIS's REMARKS ABOVE:
As I thought. No dean of game shows in those hallowed rankings. For shame, Channel 4.

These lists are fun to see, but in no way do they hold any water. It's like was said....Just a bunch of people sitting around downing sodas and greasy pizzas and thinking "how many game show hosts can we think of...let's put 'em in a list!".

I, too, thought the same thing Jimmy did...Let's see WABC's "list".

#19's notable show...Love Connection.  Last time I checked...WoF wouldn't have existed without him.

#16's show is not a game show.  Moan and complain about it...it's NOT a game show.

I agree about #10's pic.

Directly from #9: Notable Show: Match Game (1962-69).

#1 (the "lock" on this in these thingys)... Explanation: There can only be one, and that one is easily Bob Barker.  Bull.

And I agree on all counts with the previous posters (except for Don's comment about AG...) that this list is "not of high quality".

We can agree, I trust, that American Gladiators had nifty theme music.
No Todd Russell on this list either, I see.
Where are my pills?

Yes...we can agree on that point.

Wait...great idea!  We need a Top 10 GS Theme countdown....

Obviously you haven't seen #20 -- looks like it was taken during Allen and Betty's honeymoon using an Instamatic.

Maybe WABC is waiting for WNYW to go first -- they seem to be going in numerical order.  It's possible they will base all their selections on the WCBS and WNBC lists -- I can't see Fox 5 picking anyone who's left.

It is a great idea. However, since Bill was snubbed, I imagine the same brain trust on the WNBC selection committee will give equal ignorance to the themes from All-Star Blitz and The Better Sex.
Big Brother might get into their list, though.

I'm scratching my head at total confusion. Can I ask who came up with the idea of snubbing Bill Cullen and a few others?  I'm still baffled at #16, #14..puzzled as it seems.  If they came up with a top ten list of game show themes, what chances are there that a few reality shows make the list?

That there were people here, where they should know better, putting any stock whatsoever in this list (when, again, it was all about the "funny" captions), was disappointing.

That there are STILL people putting any stock in this list after they've already been told this is absolutely goddamn incredible.

To the author's credit, he did manage to include Dick Clark in his top ten, something that the GSN special -- which obviously had some amount of group thought put into it -- failed to do.

Beyond that, sure.  This is obviously a hastily-assembled throwaway bit probably put together by a sole thirtysomething without any real knowledge of the genre.  He included Anderson Cooper and Johnny Carson because he thought it made him look like a game show genius, and he included American Gladiators and Marc Summers because he remembered them from his childhood.  Beyond that, the baffling thing to me is that he had a yesteryear choice like Monty Hall all the way up to third.

I take your point and Chris's and agree with both of you.
This reminds me of a list a college-age young man drew up naming who, in his opinion, were the top ten TV newscasters who ever drew breath upon the eight planets and Pluto.
I believe this list was drafted in preparation for a class discussion in the School Of Journalism.
Said list was drawn up this past autumn and included Katie Couric, Wolf Blitzer and Sheppard Smith.
Nowhere on there appeared the names Edward R. Murrow, David Brinkley or Walter Cronkite.
Many of the inclusions and omissions were indeed perplexing.

Stopped reading right there. Okay, so maybe I kept reading...

Wonder if he's ever even heard of him, esp. since there's a prestigious journalism award named after him.

ObGameShow: Art Fleming was a news anchor at one point.

Just as long as the list didn't look like this...

1) John Stewart
2) Stephen Colbert
3) Katie Couric
4) Bill O'Reilly
5) Shepard Smith
6) Wolf Blitzer
7) Ann Curry
8) Anderson Cooper
9) Sean Hannity
10) Alan Colmes

ObGS: Anderson Cooper hosted "The Mole", as the writer commented on.
