Title: Teen Primetime TPiR?
Post by: ilovetpir on September 12, 2006, 11:54:41 PM
I've thought of an idea. The Price Is Right can hold a primetime show saluting the teens of the U.S. Kids ages 12 through 17 go on and win prizes.

Prizes appropriate for the age group would be horrible. I mean, playing Pathfinder for an X-Box 360?!

Offer cars. What in the world is an MDS without a luxurious car being offered? I know you would all be asking. "What would a 14-year old girl do with a Winnebago, or a cabin cruiser, or a Corvette?" But all MDS's need these prizes for lovely ratings.

Offer trips to other locations. Age-appropriate places like Hawaii, Bermuda, Bahamas, Roseland Ranch and other kid-oriented places would be terrible. Offer trips to other places like Berlin, Tokyo, Rio De Janiero, London, Sydney or Paris.

Take a look at this.

Christopher, from Arizona, plays DOUBLE PRICES for a Playstation 3. (S)

$228
($285) WIN!
>$285< PICK

That would not impress audiences. So instead of a game console. We have this.

Christopher, from Arizona, plays DOUBLE PRICES for a Catalina 250 25' Wing Keel Sailboat. (L&S)

$26,828
($28,050) WIN!
>$28,050< PICK

Now you can all say how stupid this is.

I think the word "controller" was left off the end of that prize name.

/and it'll probably break in 3 months.

Yes, I DO wonder what a 14 year old would do with a Winnebago.
So...you want kids to play for adult prizes. Then what really makes the game any more watchable than if adults play? Now, the Australian version had a day where kids played...but with their grandparents.

Short and simple, I don't think the idea would work...especially the way you have it planned. Personally, I can only think of one other show which could have effectively pulled off a teen week...Classic Concentration.

I'm with the consensus on that.

It's pointless. Honestly and for truly pointless.

And I'm gonna raise the same question you asked...WHAT DOES A KID NEED WITH A CAR/WINNEBAGO/SAILBOAT? You try to justify your argument by saying, "well, an MDS needs this, so-" I'm gonna cut you off right there.

There's a difference between a Million Dollar Spectacular PIR and a teen version of PIR. One would draw viewers. One wouldn't draw flies. Take a guess which one?

If you're gonna submit an idea, submit one that makes sense and that won't get you laughed out of here.

What would teens know about any kind of pricing?  They would know about as much about prices of items as the average "Chain Reaction" contestant knows about words.

This is true. But of course Airplane II's my favorite because of the Art Fleming cameo.
He who uttered the line I used above was named "Johnny" in the first Airplane film and "Jacobs" in the second. Fan of Chuck Barris perhaps? Or Jack Barry? Or Nick Nicholson? Or W.T. Naud? ????????

How can the kids pay for [car] insurance? I bet mommy and daddy are too cheap to pay for it (I know mine are...) and I don't think there are any geckos out there to help the kids' cause either.

Long story short, the game doesn't work. Sure its an okay idea on paper, but in practice in the real world of daytime television...I wouldn't want to watch (or host or announce) it with a 10 foot pole.

Oh yeah! You can have Ashlee Simpson sing "come on down" as the theme...

Those showcases might be a little tough.  How about a $5000 Hot Topic gift card, a $10000 Hollister gift card and a $10000 gift card to the Mall of America. (How the kid would get there is his own problem.)  What would make it challenging would be the math.

Totally unworkable idea for television, but if your teacher would allow it, you could make it a class project for extra credit.  Ask your teacher if you could host, or let her do it if she wants to. Bring in some items or pictures of items and see if any of your classmates can come close to guessing the prices.  After ten minutes or so you would see that teens have no awareness of how much things cost.

A public message to "ilovetpir": You sir, are the best at spending other people's imaginary money that I've ever seen. In all of my years of lurking and posting, I have never seen anyone put up ideas that are so clearly grounded in fantasy with no concept of economics, a budget, or how many times a kid is going to get his ass kicked when he rolls onto his high school campus in a brand new Lincoln Town Car.

Excelsior to you, good sir. You are truly one of the great ones when it comes to assigning random numbers to imaginary ideas.

For some reason, I was already a member, so at least I didn't have to sign up again. (Oh, right, I remember. I was going to try and help the guy out with material for his games.)

For those who aren't members, don't bother. It's, well, I'm not sure what it is. I do know that the people who think this is a passable idea are in love with it, and those who don't think that the former group are high as kites. And their "signature banners" are way too big. (For that matter, I think a signature banner at all is overkill, but that's just me.)

For those in the know, who is the guy in the "Aw, jeez..." picture? Kinda looks like a bewildered Art James...

EDIT: Gol-lee, I'm a dumbass. I didn't even read to the end of the thread. It's worthwhile just to see two of our intelligent posters laying the smack down long and thick.

I think you're missing the point.  Being able to drive yourself to school when you are in 8th grade is nothing to brag about.

People who can do that most likely drop out of school and are forced to live a life consisting of posting inane, pointless and repetitive threads on various message boards with moronic topics such as Price is Right episodes for teen contestants...even sometimes including fictionalized results.

For the most part, yes, however there are cases where it can be excused such as severe illness that screws up one's education in their early years or if there were severe problems in early childhood. I know cases where people have struggled early on due to undiagnosed problems or were held back in some form and then became a great student regardless.

I'll top that by a case I knew: In middle school there was someone who was 13 and in 5th Grade due to waiting a year for Kindergarten, an illness that wiped out a year, and repeating a grade. Had he not been bumped up a grade mid-year, he'd have been elgible to get his license early on in 8th Grade. Then again, he was moved up and eventually dropped out...

Back to the topic, the whole concept is so funny that it's good for a laugh for inane purposes. It'd make a good TV spoof or a project for a high school (or even college) class though to show how out of touch with financial reality teenagers (and even the lower end of 20somethings) are.

By the rules of algebra, PS1 + PS2 = PS3.  I can probably find a PS1 for next to nothing, while a new PS2 system is $130.  Therefore, I have proven you can purchase a PS3 for half that $300 price tag.

Quod erat demonstrandum.

Indeed...besides, the Oz TPiR seemed to use gimmicks like this every so often...around the same time, they also had Celebrity Week, where celebs would join the contestants onstage for their PGs.

Besides, the idea was mulled way back when the show was in the development stages...in that Dennis James/Mark Goodson pitchfilm making the trading circuit, Goodson mentions the possibility of a PG involving 2 young children bidding to try and win a prize for their mothers...thankfully, this element of child exploitation was scrapped before they made it to air.

ObGameShow: One of the celebs on the aforementioned Aussie TPiR's Celeb Week was 90s $otC host Glen Ridge.

You might want to get rid of Master Key on your game listing...'cuz I have a feeling you're going to need the Master Key to unlock this thread.

(Which will never happen).

Friendly advice: Cut your loses and abandon this entirely.

You do not get to decide when discussion stops.  That said, discussion already had stopped for almost a week before you decided to post about it again.

Hint: if you don't post about it, no one will reply to you about it.
