Title: Game Show Marathon Commercial during Survivor Reunion Show
Post by: Timsterino on May 15, 2006, 12:46:29 AM
All I can say is wow, talk about recreating the past. The sets look absolutely fantastic. They showed Ricki Lake in front of the Press Your Luck set, the Match Game set as "Match Game 73" and a tiny bit of Let's Make a Deal and Family Feud. They are genuine recreations and look amazing.

Wow. I can't wait for this show. I wish I had the ability to do screen caps. Those in the west coast watch during the 10PM hour for the commerical.

Tim :-)

As irritating as I find said acronym, I will say I do not, right now, but I could, since the Survivor stuff is sitting on my Tivo right now and I don't think it would be hard to edit it out. So if nobody beats me to it I'll put something together later.

Awesome. Thank you in advance. I will admit I haven't gotten excited much about the newer crop of shows that has been on, but GSM I am *extremely* excited about.

Did they give any specifics as to what day(s)/time(s) the GSM will air, or did they just say "Coming Soon to CBS.."?

You can see a glimpse of the set here (http://\"http://www.richfields.tv/gsm.html\")

You can also read why Rich goes into the Guiness World Book of Records.

From Rich's website:
Quote
In fact, Rich Fields will now enter the Guiness Book of World Records for announcing the most (differently titled) gameshows in a single year. That record was previously held by the late Johnny Olson.
No matter that seven of them are one-shot episodes of shows that are no longer on the air. I knew Guinness had done some dumb things in the past, covering non-records and whatnot, but even this is a joke.

Quote
"After Rich's performance on the first show, CBS knew they had to have him on all seven shows. Rich is the best there is!"
Also incorrect.

No problem, Chris. Unlike a good bit of the population around here, I'm pretty patient.

I'm also glad I'm sitting down to see that - holy crap!!! Whoever said the sets were true to the show wasn't kidding- WOW! Now I'm really excited. (However, first person to nitpick about things like the font on the MG nameplates doesn't match - I will send Karlberg over to throw your set out the window.)

Seeing the "Feud" clip, however, made me wonder something. I'm not trying to sound like a fanboi who loves the original sets, but I couldn't help wondering...Alex was saying on his blog that the sets were built for a reason...Is it possible that the "Feud" set will be retained for the new season? Just a thought...

In a quick aside to Aaron, while the sets are great for this production, if the GSM "Feud" set were used for regular broadcast, I'd bet a lot of people would wonder why an SNL parody is on when "Feud" should be.

But that aside - yes, these sets are incredible! Should be a ton of fun one way or the other when it all airs. Time to go buy some blank tape!

The sets are absolutely amazing, no two ways about it.

Now if Rich Fields takes the record of announcing the most differently titled game shows in a year, does that mean Ricki Lake, of all people, supplants Wink Martindale for hosting the most different game shows in a year as well?

If Guinness is really gonna accept those records, it just shows how completely irrelevant that volume has become.

What codec/player do I need to play this file?  Neither my Mac or my Windows XP machine seem to have it...
Title: Game Show Marathon Commercial during Survivor Reunion Show
Post by: clemon79 on May 15, 2006, 11:16:24 PM
It's MPEG2, so most likely a DVD codec of some kind.

EDIT: Not anymore. I reencoded it to a straight MPEG so that you don't need a DVD codec on your system to play it. Same location and filename.

I'm guessing these folks don't have a DVD codec installed. It was pretty simple to reencode it to straight MPEG so that everyone ought to be able to play it now, so I did. Plus it made the file an MB smaller, which is always good.

Here's what I know.  These are basically, as many expected, mini-pilots.  If you guys email, call, and write CBS and Fremantle enough, these will come back.  There is at least one that's already in planning to be revived fulltime, but you guys can play a major portion of the rest.  So go to Fremantle and CBS's website and literally beg them.  Written letters and calls work MUCH better than emails.  And this being my first TV job that I've actually been able to see on TV, it's kinda weird seeing my stuff up there.

How do we know that the millions of Price fans wanted Randy?  I know these boards did, but we can't speak for everyone else unless we have concrete proof.  A board of a few hundred game show fans doesn't speak for the entire viewing population of Price.

Thanks Chris for the download.... good stuff.

Now, it all looks great, but i'm curious....the Price clips looked a helluva lot like the current studio, current set. Was that a pilot/demo/runthrough? Or will they be shooting that episode on the current stage?

To me, one of the charms of Antandec's UK Version was how the shows were lovingly reproduced on a stage designed for the marathon..... Meaning, you could tell that you were watching the marathon, and not an old rerun of that week's show.... Looking at the clips in the ad, I dont' get that feeling.

Based on what I know, everything is on "custom" sets. Now, whether they regurgitated the Price props for the one they do for GSM, I don't know. Certainly it would make some sense to. The Race Game price-holders look a LITTLE different than the ones they use on the show based on that one-quarter second glance we get in the spot, though, or they are placed differently, or something. It just doesn't look quite right. So I'm thinking it's a custom set with recycled props.

I was told everything was recreated except the wheel.

They taped an intro to either the series or just the Price episode about 2 weeks ago on the Price set.

They put black tile (ala Davidson) in front of door #1 and had Ricki do several takes. It was quite strange seeing the daytime set with a partial black floor. But it didn't look that bad. Against the turntable is a different story.

Unless said PYL contestant, Ruth, secretly became an overnite celebrity and the CBS make-up & wardrobe department somehow got her to look exactly like she did over 20 years ago, I'd say that may be one of the recycled openings they'll use to begin PYL Night on GSM.

Thanks for reminding me to set a TiVo season pass.  Turns out I had to decide whether my love for game shows outweighed my love for proper spelling, since it's listed as "Gameshow Marathon" -- arrgh.

Don't think it's been mentioned yet, but here is tomorrow nights guest listing for "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson":

Wednesday, May 24
Ricki Lake (Gameshow Marathon)

Also I noticed during TPIR today that they remade the :20 spot, no longer showing the celebs on Family Feud (just family members) and cut out the PYL segment, both of which spoiled content for those of us who know how the segments are set up.

Also, what's the deal with the cheerleaders in the audience with name tags at the beginning. Are they doing some of the special Card Sharks polls where they use 10 alike people?

Furthermore, it would require me to have Tivoed the American Academy Of Country Music Awards program, and I assure you I can think of several activities I'd rather engage in before doing that, most of which involve something red-hot being jammed into a very tender area of my body. :)

One slash: I certainly wouldn't take "Food" as my specialty category if "The $64,000 Question" were to return, but even I know that gazpacho is a cold soup. That's the point.

Two slash: When did it become the rule that every interrogative must end with no or yes? If you know the answer, then you really don't have to ask.

Three slash: Microsoft was going to put out a card game for their Messenger service. It had all sorts of neat things, but one of the things that was removed from the final product was a fire graphic that would light up when you won a hand. The rejected name of the product? "Red Hot Poker."

Three slashes! Ah ah ah!

It's not, though, not totally. Gazpacho has a fair amount of cucumber in it, too. And I remember reading some recipes (when I was trying to find my original one) that suggest it can be served hot as well. I tried it last time I made mine and found I like it better that way. :)

Sorry if this got lost in the...soup play, but the latest cuts of the commercial (which aired today in and around TPIR) featured some great shots of their "Card Sharks" set which is also nice. It's based on the Perry version, which is a plus.

I apologize if this has been mentioned.  But I've been observing the commercials and the split-screen credits on CBS, on some daytime, primetime and late night shows, that the GSMs are being frequently advertised.

IMHO, I'm happy.  Given the quality, the network wants to see this show succeed alright and get a good viewer turnout!  :)

My TiVO caught the episode of The Late Late Show with Ricki on it and they showed a clip of the TPiR segment with Paige Davis. It gives a little bit of information away that may spoil it for some people (though it  might not spoil as much as CBS has done already with the promos). The only thing I will comment on (at least in this clip) is the sound quality. It has the "taped in a giant auditorium" feel to it. The audio is kind of echoy and the audience was DonD-like loud. Since it is a competition, the audio was probably done like that on purpose, like they are in a stadium, (and maybe so it's not to be confused with the regular show) it just sounded odd. Other than that, this looks like it's going to be great, can't wait until Wednesday. I really hope it's a hit so we can see this each summer, like the Olympics of Game Shows. I've been trying to spread the word to friends and co-workers (if they haven't seen the promotions on CBS yet).

I just caught another run of the ad. The "Family Feud" segment isn't spoiled for me because I don't know who these people are well enough to recognize them in the 1/2 second they're on screen.

On another note, holy damn if that's not the actual "Card Sharks" set from 1978. Props to the prop crew.

Since I don't want to take any chances here, let's be clear that we don't need any showoffs with TiVo and a good eye to tell us who they are.  Those of us who haven't actually seen the ads yet would just as soon remain in the dark, thank you very much.

The early runs of the promo spoiled the Family Feud segment and showed the celebs involved (clip that was uploaded to net was an early promo). I think they realized what they did and now, all current runs of this ad just show regular family members, not the celebs so unless you know what their family looks like, you won't know who they are. They were quick to fix that.

I just caught another run of the ad. The "Family Feud" segment isn't spoiled for me because I don't know who these people are well enough to recognize them in the 1/2 second they're on screen.
Since I don't want to take any chances here, let's be clear that we don't need any showoffs with TiVo and a good eye to tell us who they are.  Those of us who haven't actually seen the ads yet would just as soon remain in the dark, thank you very much.

The first time I read Travis' message, it just sounded like something that some of our members might read as an invitation.  Restrain yourselves.

That wasn't the intent at all, I was merely saying that the brief glimpse of FF doesn't ruin the eliminations. I have no desire to know who makes it to the end any earlier than the rest of the world. I can wait if you can. :)

Number 2, if the board from one game is going to sour your perceptions of the show as a whole, then you need to take Bandit Booby's advice, and get a life.

Seeing how the border has no glitzy chase lights, we can see that it DEFINITELY isn't from Eubanks- that's the only discernable difference between his gameboard and Perry's.

In addition, the border looks like the same type that was used for the border of Perry's Money Cards board. The design on the sudden death cut-off and the square lights on either side of the card line automatically tell you it's from Perry's version.

I could care less about the red/blue light border missing- that certainly isn't going to keep me from watching- Besides, the detail paid attention to is good enough for me.

Somebody please tell me what in that picture looks like it came from the Eubanks set- because I can't find it.

To me, it looks somewhat of a combination of the Perry and the Eubanks set, though leaning closer to Perry. To quote Karlberg, GEEZ! It's close enough, and still a hell of a lot better than the CS 2001 set.

I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that we're gonna have a few folks (and in THIS case the word "otaku" probably applies) who are gonna race to their keyboards to bitch about any "inconsistencies" they may find in the set designs. I can think of two reasons they might do this:
And there really isn't a lot we can do about it, aside from hope that the producers of this project know the same thing that the Star Trek folks have to: any niche interest has an ample supply of complete jackholes who are never gonna be satisfied unless you can read their mind and reproduce the exact vision they are expecting. And that's impossible.

Not meaning to spoil the fun of the trhead, but it ain't the Eubanks set, believe me. You notice these things when you actually go to the taping. Also, the Perry neon "Card Sharks" sign was reproduced in the same font as the original. So, I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend... You could cut ties with all the lies, that you've been living in.

Hoping not to spoil another outcome, anyone wonder why they are calling the MG show "Match Game 73"?

Let me take a stab...

1. The writers are so horrible that they weren't even good enough to produce any questions which modeled the racy, edgy, yet laugh worthy material from 74-79. In turn, they came up with the "plain vanilla" 4 word questions from 1973 (John saw Mary's BLANK).

2. Don't tell me that they're going to pull a '98 and try to pass $5000 off as "big money"

3. Or, on the practical side, maybe just because the best incarnation of the show began in 73, hence the name.

I can say with firsthand knowledge that at least one of the writers is a former Usenetter who totally "gets" whatever classic format they'd care to throw at him.

Whike I saw Coaster's speculation as just that, it is somewhat disheartening that with no knowledge one way or the other, the first instinct is to go for the most negative possibility.  It's also ludicrous speculation.  This show is being produced for the masses, and the masses are going to expect humorous questions.  In fact, there are probably only a few fringe dwellers like us who even remember that the questions were ever any other way.

If they really are using the '73 nomenclature (and again, I haven't seen the spots) it's probably because nostalgia is a big part of the draw here, people are going to remember the '7X business, and it would be preposterous to call the show "Match Game '7X", so they went with the first-season title.

It looks like they will be doing educated guess questions with Card Sharks, and that's fine with me. I kind of like that they're taking a few versions of the show and mixing them together (at least they're using the good versions to mix). Sometimes in the case of a revival, the new show had a few elements that would have worked on the old one (sometimes). Now we'll kind of get to see what it was like to have the "out of these 10 people" questions on Perry's version. It could be worse, they could have mixed in all versions of the show, then with CS we'd get a few cheesy a** clips and a bunch of sexual innuendo. MG could have been 98'-ized, Family Feud 99'-ized and so on.
These days with game shows I'll pretty much take anything I can get as long as it's good. With retro being in I knew something like this had to come out sometime. I can see GSN picking up the reruns on this like they did with Game Show Moments Gone Bananas.
I hope it doesn't happen, but if it doesn't do so well on CBS, or if they decide to pass on another set, do you think GSN could pick up the rights to make another series? Personally, I don't think it would be so bad with regular contestants as the contenders if GSN didn't want to pay for celebs (save for Match Game).
Still, I am really excited and get more excited as we get closer to the premiere (and especially after the clip on The Late Late Show). I'm hoping this takes off, and I'm happy that these classic shows can get some new exposure on major network tv, especially to the younger crowd who doesn't know of some of it. Plus, maybe we can see some GOOD revivals from now on. Maybe they'll learn you can't mess with the classics.

I'm puzzled why the folk at CBS declared that Card Sharks needed new question types in the first place. What's wrong with "To take control of the cards, you must win a toss-up question. These questions will see how well you can predict human nature." Knowing the height of the Empire State Building in blocks of cheese does not predict human nature.

I'm all the more interested that Card Sharks is given a chance to be done right, if only for one night, but think the question above is worth asking.

Well, my question is this: what the hell do questions about human nature have a thing to do with discerning whether a playing card is higher or lower than the one before it? The question on Card Sharks could be replaced by a coin toss with very little effect on the overall format.

My guess is that they wanted to mix it up a bit because they thought the variety would attract more viewers.

Kudos on the CS staff for not just doing "Yet Another Buzz-In Toss-Up Question For Control."

...and so're the educated guess and audience survey questions. So I'm not sure what your complaint is, aside from "that's not how they did it before", which you know as well as I is a crappy complaint.

I don't have a complaint. I'm asking why someone thought it was necessary to replace interesting questions like "Which is worse, a street thug that steals $100 or a CEO that embezzles $10,000?" with things like how much a Super Bowl advertisement costs. I would be willing to bet there's at least one person who could answer that with a high degree of certainty, too.

Someone at the G-T offices had to say "Yeah! That'd be a good idea! And let's have ten people from the crowd answer questions too!".

I don't put Skittles in my chocolate chip cookies not because it's not the way it was done before, but because it would taste awful. Card Sharks was interesting because of the interesting questions, and that's diluted when we have to stop down for five minutes for Bob to personally interview each person of the ten-person survey group.

It looks like they will be doing educated guess questions with Card Sharks, and that's fine with me. I kind of like that they're taking a few versions of the show and mixing them together (at least they're using the good versions to mix).

Do we know this to be true?  I haven't seen/heard anyone state (aside from this posting) that the educated guess questions would be in Card Sharks.  I'm not saying it is or isn't true... just hadn't heard it.

We DID see in 2001 how many people watched just for the cards... =D

Asking subjective survey questions gives you some insight into the minds of the players, and is scores more interesting than a coin flip or something like this:

"How many pennies tall is the Empire State Building?  Jim?"

Jim: *blank stare*  Hell, I don't know... a million?

"One million... Susie, higher or lower?"

Susie: *shrugs* Uh... higher?

"Higher.  The actual height in pennies of the Empire State Building is... 493,862!"

No, it hasn't been said for sure, I just said that it looks like they are. By looking at the longer GSM promos, at the beginning where they show cheerleaders jumping up to that long rail type thing, by slowing it down with the miracle of TiVo, I can count about 7 on screen, and more appear to be coming on. Out of all the shows, I can't think of any of them that would need 7+ cheerleaders with the long CS-style nametags on. This was just my guess by seeing the clip. I'd pretty much bet the farm that they are doing them (at least once) by just seeing that. And, if they aren't, they aren't.  We'll find out.
Yeah, it's my opinion. You asked me why it was a good thing that the original CS had only the regular survey questions, and I defended my point very well. In addition to not taking five minutes out of the show for one question, there was continuity. If you're just gonna dismiss my points out of hand like this, why should I bother?

I get it. I'm asserting that the survey questions improved the game because both portions used the higher/lower mechanic very well. If memory serves, you didn't watch Card Sharks anyhow, Mark, so your opinion isn't very relevant at all. It wouldn't matter if they rolled dice, threw cards at a hat, or had a chimpanzee spin a carnival wheel to determine control, you still wouldn't watch.

I, however, did (and do) enjoy the program a great deal. Not just because of the surveys, but because the whole show fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. If you had players alternating control every turn, you'd still have the card play, but it would be far less interesting.

Must find Prozac. Breathe in, breathe out.

I do not care one way or the other about the type of questions used on the CS portion of Game Show Marathon. I do think that if you're going to pay homage to six great game shows, you may as well go all out, which it seems like they're doing. That doesn't mean that I'll pitch a hissy if the lights don't flash properly, or a $470 slide is absent from the Big Board.

Anyone who does complain about missing slides, the font of the name plate on "Match Game" or anything else, is not someone who's opinion I care about.

Missing slides on the PYL board is absolutely something that should be avoided. It's ok if certain slides are replaced by others, but if there's just plain nothing there, that could screw up the game. :)

You might be onto something.

"Welcome back to round one of Press Your Luck. We have $0 in cash and prizes on the board, with no nasty whammies to take the money away."

Player One: "Big Bucks, no whammies...stop!"

No, that was not my question. My question was "what is it specifically about 'human-nature' questions that ties in with the playing of the cards that isn't accomplished just the same with the other two types?" You asked why they felt they needed to mix it up, I offered my theory, and now you think I'm dismissing your point just because I happen to disagree with yours? Screw that.

I apologize for any misunderstanding in the question.

They're not any better for the game than any other 50/50 method, I just find them interesting because they were well done. I'm not crazy about "We asked 100 housewives, have you ever had more than one leftover casserole at a time," but when you ask 100 Catholic priests if they believe that miracles happen, and you get an answer of 99, that's something to talk about.

Some guy put out a Mac Card Sharks game back when I owned and could use a Mac. And by golly, there were some interesting questions to it. If "Card Sharks" had done all EG questions from the start, I'd have no problem with it. It seemed like the CBS version thought "We're coming back, bigger and better and so on, and now we have TWO new question types! TWO!" as opposed to "The game show you barely had a chance to miss is coming back, just on a different network.

I'm certainly not against that type of question; I thought it was used very well as the opening question for Greed, and It Takes Two, and when the questions are interesting, that's great. I didn't think that many of the EG questions on Card Sharks were interesting, and certainly not something I'd remember after the fact.

I didn't watch because I didn't have access to GSN until very recently (as in, two days ago).  If you're going to dismiss someone's opinion because you don't think they watched, I don't see why I should bother.

And I'd buy that except that your own web site rated all versions of "Card Sharks" low, and in private conversations to me told me straight away that you didn't care for the format. Whatever percentage you want to assign to a show is your business, but if you don't enjoy the show, you're not going to watch. If getting GSN brought you to the Light Side and you see the greatness of the show, then that's one good thing for GSN, which means they're at 572,999 to go.

Reminds me of the genesis of the public radio word game Says You (http://\"http://www.wgbh.org/radio/saysyou/\").  Quoting from its FAQ:
It was a dark and stormy night when, suddenly, Richard Sher drew the Trivial Pursuit question "What do you call the band of low pressure that surrounds the Earth at the Equator?"In his typically debonair fashion, his first thought was: "Who cares?! What a dumb question." Then, he realized the answer was "the doldrums." ... Richard's epiphany was "the point is not that it's important to know the answer; it's only important to like the answer."
Educated Guess didn't bother me all that much once I got used to it, because it still stayed with the high-low synchronicity of the game.  The problem with the audience groups was that they slowed down a show that was already moving at a below-"J!" pace even when Perry did the show.

To me, the added end games were what I didn't like about the second version, because they diluted the Money Cards, which was a perfect end game to begin with, and didn't follow the high-low synchronicity.  It seemed to me like someone at CBS or MGP was bothered that a maximum win on the Money Cards was near-impossible (except for Dorothy Brown).  They shouldn't have.

Warning to viewers of CTV... they're running clips from the shows on commercial so if you've figured out what order the shows are in you might figure out who has won :)

Personally I'm just looking forward to seeing how they go about it... sure I might know the end result, but isn't it about the way they get there?
