Or, even better, it can help you determine whether or not to invest in the whole episode.

Who is the wrestler, and should i care that NBC is picking wrestler's families to play the game... oh looky here!

Next week, Joey plays so he can win Ross a ticket to L.A.

One, it never ceases to amuse me that Vince has registered trademarks on some of these people's actual names.

Two, if anything good can come out of fluff like Dancing With the Stars, let us hope that Stacy Keibler can use it to escape the clutches of the WWE, or at least negotiate herself a nice juicy deal the next time around.  Apparently her current indentured servitude...uh, performance contract is about to run out, and it couldn't come at a better time.

Except his real name is James Maritato.

Oh, yer talking about Trish Stratus. Yeah, that's a stage name, too. (Her real name is Patricia Stratigias.) "Edge" is actually Adam Copeland. It's petty, yes, but if he's dumping assloads of money into promoting this character, why should they be able to take the character name with them if they should jump to another company?

(In some cases, the trademark is owned by the wrestler, too.)

(Yeah, I watch wrestling. Wanna fight now? :))

While I'm not defending Vinny Mac, I don't see the real difference between Stacy's "indentured servitude", and the deal Don Pardo has at NBC, which by all reports is fair and equitable compensation, since all Don has to do is talk into a mic, and all Stacy has to do is look good in a short skirt.

(And she's pretty damned good at her job. :))

Er, what was I trying to type?

Oh yes, Vinnie Mac's trademarking everything in sight goes all the way back to the Hulkamania era and the WWF national expansion.  That doesn't surprise me one bit.  Now how real names like John Cena get trademarked...I don't really know since I'm not a lawyer or a Lawler.

Matt's showing sympathy for the wrong Diva.  Poor Ashley's nasty fall resulted in her leg breaking in several places.  Stacy Keibler may, may have a shot of the being the first true female wrestling personality to crossover into the mainstream; where the artists formerly known as Chyna and Sable failed.

There's a Wrestlecrap article on those two posted this week.  The horror...

ObGS:  I should've recorded the two Combs-era Feud wrestling specials.

Oh...and where will Nunzio's hillbilly cousin be? Too wealthy for DOND?  ;-)

Not to throw cold water on this but...doesn't think stink?

NBC is getting wrestling from the WWE and it just so happens that a relative of a WWE employee plays DoND.

I thought most games (show orotherwise) had clauses that said something to the effect of employees and their families of primary and subsidiary companies are ineligible to play.

What's next, the sister of the weather-guy for NBC New York is on during a ratings period?

I've BEEN to a Wrestlemania, have you?

I deliberately chose the words "actual name" to mean the name they use in public, though I admit there's a subtle distinction between that and "real name" if I don't make it clear which I'm talking about.  My impression was that "Trish Stratus" was a fitness model using that name long before Vince got his mitts on her, and that several other normal-sounding names Vince has trademarked (many of which were not mentioned in the specific, referenced article) were being used by the performers long before they joined the WWE.

Having done a little more research, it appears the big reason the WWE does that is to protect themselves against unscrupulous types wanting to use WWE names in marketing their own products, and not so much to keep the performers from jumping ship.  And if, as you say, the performer also co-owns the trademark in many cases, then Vince probably has more control over the character names that the WWE creates than he does over the stage names he had nothing to do with, though for the purposes of protecting the product they all have that little ® beside them.  Still looks weird.

You know, it hadn't really occurred to me until you laid it out like that, but you're right.  There was a time when that sort of thing would have set off every standards and practices alarm in the building.  The Apprentice and Las Vegas plugs were harmless add-ons, but especially if there's a plug for the WWE event during the game, it seems like somebody ought to be taking a good, hard look at the motivation for picking that particular contestant.

Well, again, do we know for certain that Vince is the rightsholder on that service mark? I know in a lot of cases the workers had their stage names copyrighted before they got there.

If it's much of a help (and it may not be)....

I recall when Steven Williams came out of the Chris Adams Wrestling School (run by World Class Championship Wrestling.  Neither the WCCW nor Chris Adams exist anymore.)

Anyway, for awhile, he went by his real name.  The company then brought in Chris' ex-wife and his then-current wife for a storyline.  When that happened he became "Stunning Steve Austin".  As we know, when he switched to the WWF..er...WWE, that became "Stone Cold Steve Austin".  I don't know if Vinnie SMed all or part of the name.  I just throw that out there.

Based on this (http://\"http://tbo.com/sports/MGBLA4WE74E.html\") article, and some other research, my guess is that Austin owns the rights to his actual stage name, but Vinny Mac owns the "Stone Cold" nickname.

Over the past few years, the company has acquired tape libraries & intellectual properties from several different defunct promotions. Their claim now (and I know this applies to at least ECW & WCW, not sure about others) is that they own the trademarks & intellectual properties associated with those companies. And they will not allow performers to use those trademark/properties elsewhere, even if they never worked WWE. But this is quite tricky as some own the character after demonstrating prior use of it when the company tried to claim it (Ultimate Warrior, although he went to court), while others may go to court to demonstrate it (Dudleys).

As stated before, Steve Austin owns the rights to his stage name.  If Universal believed they had a case against WWE or Austin, Raw likely would not be on USA network (A NBC/Universal property) now.

It seems like NBC has been dying for DonD just to have a show to overpromote their own stuff all over. Thank God Celebrity DonD would be virtually pointless.
Wrestlers do tend to make for fun contestants to watch, though. In addition to Savage, the WWF Weakest Link (Yes, it was WWF back then) was pretty entertaining, and Diamond Dallas Page made for an entertaining Hollywood Square. However, Hogan, any time he's out of the ring, is generally pretty bland.
I'm sure there will be a Saturday Night's Main Event commercial or two during the show. However, you'd think that they would pick a guy that most people actually might know. (I know, I know, this really shouldn't have even happened) I barely know Nunzio, and I'm a pretty big wrestling buff. Never got to see a PPV, but I saw 2 Nitros, 2 Thunders, 2 WCW house shows, and a Raw in Cleveland.

And this is the saving grace of the whole rigged-contestant-booking theory...if you're gonna pick the relative of a WWE employee to help you pimp Saturday Night's Main Event, you're gonna find someone better than friggin' NUNZIO.

(Which is not to say this was a happy accident, by any stretch. But if it WAS carefully preplanned, was this really the best they could do? If Raw's start time ever bumps to 9:30 from 9:00, Nunzio's out of a job.)

I disagree.  Naturally, two such diverse interests aren't going to be 100% mutually compatible -- I imagine there are quite a few WWE fans who roll their eyes at the mention of game shows.  Still, the overwhelming evidence, from Henke to...well...me, would suggest some kind of common appreciation that you couldn't chalk up to coincidence.

From the NBC "DOND" contestant application (the ten-page one):

Neither you nor any member of your immediate family or anyone living in your household may be or have been within the last two (2) years employees, officers, directors or agents of any of the following:
i. NBC Universal, Inc. (“NBC”), Endemol USA Inc., Lock and Key Productions, Coconunu Productions, Skycastle Entertainment Company/Sullivan Compliance Company or any of their respective parent, subsidiary or affiliated companies;
ii. Any television station or channel, cable network or satellite network that airs or that may the Program;
iii. Any person or entity involved in the development, production or distribution or other exploitation of the Program;
iv. Any sponsor of the Program or its advertising agency; or
v. Any person or entity supplying services or prizes the Program.

In addition, the Producers reserve the right, but are not obligated, to disqualify or render ineligible any person who the Producers determine, in their sole discretion, is sufficiently connected with the production, administration, casting, judging or distribution of the Program such that his or her participation in the Program could create the appearance of impropriety. Such decisions shall be final and are not subject to challenge or appeal.

If Nunzio is not a member of the immediate family or lives in the household of the contestant, no one's violating anything--but that's when that last paragraph might kick in.

Which simply gives them the option to can someone if they want to. The issue here is more one of whether this person was selected to play BECAUSE of this association. And that's not illegal, they can go out and actively recruit anyone they want to play their game so long as they fill the Eligibility Rules, as opposed to Guidelines. It just leaves a bad taste in our mouth.

Me too. I keep waiting for the day I get a tape of a Tom Kennedy-hosted game show, and it opens with Tom standing there wordlessly, and after the applause dies down, he holds the microphone as close to his mouth as possible and screams, "KENNEDYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!"

Ten percent laugh, 10 percent think "Wow," 80 percent totally ignore the post.

Man, I LOVE Ken Kennedy. The evil-public-address-announcer bit hits me right where I live. Helps that he can wrestle a little, too. :)

Yeah, that passed without incident, thank goodness.  NBC must have some scruples after all.

Been to WrestleMania 1, and I'm only 30 now.  In fact, been to WMs 1, 10, 15, and 20.

If the game show thing enters into it at all, then it's probably because many of our number seem to have an affinity for shiny things. :)

There may actually be a little bit to that. Both game shows and the WWE are big extravaganzas with lots of lights and music. Neither genre would be where it is now without those production values, most likely.

'cept game shows stopped rrrrRRRIIIGGGGGGing their outcomes nearly 50 years ago.  :-P

(Closest I ever got to WWF/WWE was passing one of their production trucks on I-76 about 15 years ago on the PA Turnpike).

Picking nits because, well, I want to:  Sure, Nuni said that, but the contestant's nickname was "Monty," right?  Two Full Blooded Italians just saying their nicknames.

Now if a "Big Vito" was going to roll the dice, there's a problem... and a completely different show.

ObRestaurants:  There's a "Nunzio's Restaurant" nearby where I live, and it's pretty damn good.

Back in '95 I interviewed Hulk Hogan on our radio station in Medford, OR.  I've met Mick Foley (nice guy) and I ran into Playboy Buddy Rose about 2 months ago in a Target here in Vancouver, WA.

I'm sure the same could be said for fans of "The Simpsons", "Star Trek," or "Saturday Night Live." If out of 100 TV viewers, you have 50 game show fans and 50 wrestling fans, it makes sense that there should be some overlap between the two groups. It's not surprising in the least that there are fans of both in our group, especially when our group is larger than a thousand members.

ZH, I'm shocked that you didn't mention the XFL, and that's a good thing, because I would have bribed Zinc to permanently ban you if you had.

What about them, Zachary?

Considering its a potential future career for me; I really don't appreciate you trying to start some flack.

If that's not where you were going, my apologies in advance.
