Title: Anything Is Possible
Post by: Jimmy Owen on January 19, 2006, 01:05:27 PM
Budding gameshow producers, hold on to your dreams!  Any concept is fair game.

Coming soon to A&E: "Rock, Paper, Scissors."

I'd watch it. But Arts &/or Entertainment my ass. This used to be a respectable channel.

This show is worthless without celebrities.

I'll wait for "Celebrity Rock, Paper, Scissors" with special guest stars Michael Richards and Danny Woodburn, thank you.

It's not Arts & Entertainment--it's A&E!  :)

Of course you're right--but the fixation on young demos by advertisers and the simple problem that the audience that would appreciate cultural programming the most is the audience that hates television more than anyone else and will refuse to pay for it, especially since they paid for PBS and get Suze Orman and doo-wop during pledge drives.  It's unfortunate but true, especially since old-school A&E would've been my best hope for an Americanization of "Countdown."

AMC is currently running a contemporary British original TV series, which the USA TODAY TV columnist noted was neither American, nor a Movie, nor a Classic.

Now, if they had 52 models in low-cut dresses playing 52 Pick-Up, I'd watch.

Anyone want to bet that it's set in the Holy Roman Empire? ;)

And I'm surprised that Robert Bianco was one of the few who said that.  Either most of the people in the press who wrote angrily about AMC's switch (which I didn't think would ever come to something like "Hustle") either aren't TV critics, didn't notice or don't care anymore.  (I have the feeling that if Tom Shales had written about "Hustle," he would've complained more about what AMC has become than actually write about the show.)

But AMC is more profitable now than it was--and besides, I've always preferred TCM's programming approach for film buffs over the old AMC's nostalgia obsession.

ObGameShow:  "The Movie Masters."  'Nuff said.

ABC Family is showing Grease 2 tonight.  That's not a family movie; the only it's not rated PG-13 is because that rating didn't exist in 1982.

ObGS: Didi Conn's WC clue for "Why you make love" isn't exactly family-friendly either.

Don't you dare steal an idea I created over 7 years ago. :-P  (Really, I had that idea in late '98, albeit as a joke between myself and about half a dozen friends.  The best part of the show was the 50 lb. Susan B. Anthony dollar coin used in the bonus round.  It was to follow Shut Up and Fish!)

Didn't Games Across America cover a Rock Paper Scissors tourney several years ago?  And A&E's going to make a series out of it?  Oy...  At this rate, we'll see Kathy Griffin flipping the 50 lb. Susan B. for Edith in Topeka by July...

There was an ATGS thread, which Klaussie alluded to, some yrs back where "ideas" for game shows based on childrens' games were tossed around...pull it up on Google, it's good for a laugh. :-)

And of course ABCFAM's still stuck with "The 700 Club."  No one in their right mind would ever call that family-friendly television.

If I had to make a choice between the two, I'd rather my child hear a few bleeped words out of a dog puppet's mouth than have a man look into a camera and tell her that God condones political assassinations and gives old fat men strokes just to be spiteful.

But for the record, both of those would still top "Boobah".  Those things give me the willies.

Gee, thanks for reminding me that those wretched creatures still roam the Earth. Weren't PBS Kid's shows once educational? (Unless they are warning kids that overgrown Koosh balls will eat them unless they succeed in school.)

But enought about that.

I still don't see the entertainment value in watching people play "Rock, Paper, Scissors." Of cource, I don't see the entertainment value in watching people play Texas Hold-Em Poker either. To me both are fun to play, but extremely boring to watch.

You want a high male demographic show and no shortage of wannabe contestants???  Then an ideal game would use all the DoND models for "The $100,000 Duck Duck *Goose*".  Brooke Burns could host.

Of course, the ducking and the 'goose-ing' of the models would be different than the way we played it in school!

What a flashback!  Who'da thunk that a couple of those innocent satirical proposals 7 years ago would actually become reality -- one of which is now a highly successful format on several cable channels.
