Title: TV-14 Rating on CNBC's DoND
Post by: Jimmy Owen on December 27, 2005, 11:18:01 PM
Does the TV-14 rating on the CNBC reruns pertain to the show or the continual ticker of old news at the bottom?

Wasn't it only TV-PG on NBC?  What, CNBC's afraid their capitalist viewers can't handle a little money being given away?

Personally, I'm curious as to why the NBC airings even *needed* a TV-PG rating.  WWTBAM always got by with a "G".

Actually, I do remember the Tuesday episode being TV-14 when it aired on NBC.  And I'm also scratching my head as to what's so family-unfriendly about the show.

It would be the show content, because TV ratings can't be used for news or sports programming. But count me in as confused because I can't figure out why you'd cover a kid's eyes during that show, either.

Possibly the model's outfits?

The models' modest outfits give no reason to tack a more adult rating on the CNBC airings. Further, Howie didn't say or do anything off color. The 'PG' rating was mostly cautionary.

Unless someone here can spot something different between what CNBC airs and NBC airs, there shouldn't be a different classification at all. The show was rated 'PG' all week. That's how it should be rated now.

BTW: CNBC also changed the ratings for The Apprentice (both flavors) similarly from 'PG' to '14'. No good reason there, either (The finales should also have been rated 'PG' on the Peacock).

A couple of questions to throw out there:

1. Does cable have different standards than broadcast?
2. Does a different person do it, hence the different rating?

Each channel makes their own individual standards within the general guidelines--it's no secret that an HBO TV-14 would be a TV-MA almost everywhere else.

And it looks like two different people are making the content ratings calls regarding "DOND"--I would think that NBC Universal would have that standardized, to a certain extent.  It could be the same decision that gives certain programs an automatic content rating, whether the actual episode deserves it or not.

I don't recall ever seeing a syndicated Millionaire having anything but a TV-G rating, but I do recall some episodes of Super Millionaire having a TV-PG rating.  I don't know whether the primetime show ever had a TV-PG rating.

I'm pretty sure the May 25, 2004 show also had a TV-PG rating.

Like I said, I distinctly remember seeing a TV-14 rating last week.

I checked my tape of last week's shows and, contrary to what you saw, none of them carried a '14' TV Rating.

It's possible the rating was amended at the local level - another of the failings of the TV Rating system. However, NBC was consistent all week.  The bug at the start of each segment said 'PG'. Some of the netwok's cross-promos flashed a '14' bug (very briefly and in the wrong place IMO), but not DOND.

(In fairness, for some strange reason DOND's TV Rating was listed in newspapers and some NBC promos as '14'.)

Actually, come to think of it, I might have seen the 14 rating in one of those places.

At least you guys can see the reruns... the CNBC feed up here in Canada ran a promo for DOND at 7.59 and then immediately went into "Asia Business report" or something like that.

Worst yet was the cable guide advertising "Made in the USA" - which I heard wasn't the greatest show but I was interested in seeing it nevertheless.
