The latest edition of the Enquirer has some new Dick Clark pictures and unfortunately they arn't pretty. I was shocked as to what I saw. Dick is an American institution and I love the guy like the rest of you. This is why it was so painful to see him in a wheelchair, tilted mouth and hands that look like they barely work anymore. As sad as it is, it is clearly obvious that Dick will never be close to the same guy we all knew before.

Well, it's legitimate. One of my colleagues at the station I work at, Jonathan Casey who is a 30 year vet of the radio airwaves actually may be the last person to have interviewed Dick before his stroke last year. Story goes he went out to the left coast to interview him in the middle of 2004, not long before his stroke and had a nice hour long interview with him. Among the things Dick mentioned was something I brought up in another post, a revival of American Bandstand slated presumably at the time for this year. I'm expecting to get a copy of the interview soon, and I'll post a link to it when I do, for those skeptics out there.
Here's where the story gets freaky. Dick was to record "shout outs" to a couple of our DJs. He did one for Tommy McCarthy, who does our oldies show Saturday nights. He did that two days before his stroke. Apparently either the station or Jon himself got in touch with Dick to see if he could do a shoutout for his music program. The day he was to do Jon's shout out, Dick had the stroke. Kind of an odd and personal sidebar to the whole Dick Clark stroke.
Jon actually vouched that Dick was in a wheelchair and all, and that this will probably be his last year in Times Square. I hope and pray that it isn't...but then again, if he's really bad off, maybe I should hope that it is.

As Mark so astutely pointed out in the other thread, we probably have quite a few that could vie for that honor.
Meanwhile, I giggle every time I drive by "Dick's Sporting Goods", so I'm perhaps not the best person to pass judgment.
-
Here's what may be deemed a "Captain Obvious" statement. KYW's Eyewitness News had a small report on Dick Clark's condition and Ryan Seacrest was cited as saying that Dick Clark sounds different. Last I checked, most people who have a stroke are gonna sound a little different. Of course, if you're like Harry Caray and you pound down some Budweiser, your mileage in difference goes through the roof.

Back to the pictures -- this past Sunday's (12/25) St. Petersburg Times had a cover of Seacrest, his co-host (don't know name) and Dick Clark on the cover of their TV magazine -- with Dick standing.

All these naughty, naughty jokes are starting to remind me of when Dick was on Oprah (snicker) around 95 or 96. One of the female audience members stood up and thanked him on behalf of single women who don't have a New Year's Eve date and wind up watching Rockin Eve.
Oprah: (after the applause has died down) Well, that's what you do...you turn Dick on to help you through the night.

On top of this, they never, to the best of my knowledge, even gave a passing mention to the losses of singer Priscilla Paris, GS host Art James, ventriliquist/artificial heart inventor Paul Winchell, Tony the Tiger/Grinch vocalist Thurl Ravenscroft, Eddie Albert or Charles Rocket. I e-mailed Leonard Maltin via his newsletter website, and he agreed there should have been some acknowledgement, but admitted that ET has changed its focus considerably.
To be fair, they gave a brief mention of the loss of Ralph Edwards and also mentioned Rosa Parks, but this is a show that in its earlier days devoted a whole show to the late Henry Fonda and even acknowledged the losses of Teddy Nadler (the Ken Jennings of "$64,000 Question") and Kenny Delmar (radio's Senator Claghorn and the cartoon voice of "The Hunter").

I remember ET doing a full segment on Jack Barry's passing the day he died in 1984. By the time of Goodson's death in 1992, ET's focus had changed, and his death got only a 10 or 15 second passing mention. Even Rather and Brokaw did a minute or two piece on his death that day.

Just saw the Dick Clark New Year's Rockin Eve clip with Dick Clark...
Many people may have thought that he would be close to 100%.... then reality sank in. He's one tough cookie. The slurred speech says it all. He may not be the same Dick Clark yet, but it could've been much worse.
May there be good health for all of us in 2006.
-
I felt too bad to watch more than a little bit, but it was indeed good to see him back at one of his many jobs.
-
It's sad...I was fighting back tears when Dick was shown. Looks not too bad, but the slurred speech...yeah I feared the worst and though he could be far worse off...it still tugs at me.
-
I almost cried hearing a raspy, slower speaking Dick Clark. Very heart tugging moment. His right side appears to have been affected, but he can move his left arm. It appears his segments are pre-recorded (unless, Randy, you correct me and tell me otherwise) Despite all this, Dick Clark is still Dick Clark, and it was touching to see him kissing a lady that I assume is his wife when the ball was finished descending.
I would be surprised if Dick returned next year, but PLEASE, ABC... you can do better than Ryan Seacrest!
-
I'm surprised by the sense of sadness I'm getting in these posts. My first thought when I heard a raspy, slurred voice was "Yeah, he's back!" I mean, we all knew he wouldn't be the same, I'm sure we all braced ourselves, but at 11:35 pm, I saw a guy who I've known my entire life, looking virtually the same as he always had, and he wasn't putting on an act--he was full of life, full of optomism, and happy to be there. By the time the sound of his voice registered with me, it didn't matter. All I cared about was the fact that he was there, and voice be damned, I think that's all Dick cared about. There was no sadness to be found where I was sitting.
-
Although I do feel sadness over the state he's in, it's still wonderful to see that he made it to Times Square this year and is in high spirits. Furthermore, it's great to be seeing him throughout the show - I thought maybe he'd only make one speech.
-
I agree with Adam. I'll add that we should hope and pray that Dick can continue to make progress, because he's obviously off to a very good start. I think despite that "we were warned", there was still a sense of "shock". It's like one would still jump when hearing the sound of a balloon pop, even if the person popping the balloon was right infront of us.
Don't feel sorry for Dick, there's no reason to.
-
I see your point, the glass half full end of the spectrum, Adam, believe me I do. He does have the life in him, it's just that the voice, the tie that connects broadcaster with viewer/listener is at fault at least in the interim. He'll never sound as he use to...he will sound better though, I'm sure in due time. And, if there's a next year for Dick, I hope he'll be back and sounding better.
Say, let's have a little fun. A broadcaster in Connecticut has compiled some interesting sound clips from Dick's NYRE 2004. They can be heard here: http://www.theradiotrip.com/sections/audio...earsrockin.html (http://\"http://www.theradiotrip.com/sections/audio/sound_bites/dick_clarks_newyearsrockin.html\")
-
A great sign was that some of his famous cadence snuck through - you could hear that patented Dick Clark delivery slide through every so often, and it sounds like he got better as the night went on (and nerves wore off, I guess).
Congratulations, Dick, and get even more well soon.
-
I'll just echo what everyone else has said... I was just simply so choked up. I've spent a few New Year's Eves with him, and well, he didn't sound the same. However, I was watching for a few minutes and got over it. Yeah, he's not the same, but in reality, he really is the same. It felt the same to me. He knows he sounds slurred and he could've shied away. But he didn't because he wanted to participate in something he's made special for decades. And I was just really proud of him.
And unless they superimposed a background behind him, which seems very unnecessary, he was live. Thanks, Dick.

I didn't know whether to applaud or cry when I saw and heard Dick tonight. I guess both would be the 'right' way to react. I immediately thought back to Winning Lines and his appearance on the Osmond version of 'Pyramid', to happier days for him. Still, it's amazing to see him bounce back this quickly -- and yes, this is quick -- from a stroke, particularly at his age. Not many could do what he did tonight or have done it as well, and it was very clear that he was having a good time.
Well done, Dick! I hope to see you back at the desk and doing even better for New Year's Rockin' Eve '07.
-
Just heard Dick, didn't see him, as I was channel flipping (aside: there are *zero* good New Years shows any more).
I must admit my first thought was sadness, but folks make some good points above. Kudos for getting out there and doing the show again.
-
My reaction to seeing Mr. Clark on ABC and right now on GSN...
Dick Clark is back and the world is a better place.
You could just hear the emotion in his voice as he was calling the ball drop. Also, you could tell he wanted to be there more than anything, and a speech he made later on in the evening said it all.
As much as he's been through, after hearing his slurred speech for a bit, I quickly was picking out the Dick Clark of old. For a man to have been what he's been through and come back a year later and do something that defines him (and NYE really does define him), with all the courage and grace it took for him to get up there and do the job as well as he did speaks more than he ever can.
My respect for Dick Clark has grown considerably as I now can see what a trooper he really is.
(And also, was it just me, or was Ryan Seacrest trying to do his best imitation of Mr. Clark!?)
-

I can assure you Dick's part in the proceedings was very much live - at least until after the midnight segment, and that was his lovely wife on hand to carry on the other tradition. His microphone stayed open for a bit as they exchanged their smooches, too.
They did "pull back" the shot a bit whenever Dick was on (very slow zoom), which I think was appropriate. Considering what he and Kari have gone through over the last 13 months, he looks pretty darn good despite it all. He's still got some of that "eternal teenager" in him. May it last.
IMO, I think he WAS ready for this party.
-
Everyone can tell that that man had tried and tried, and gave it his all. He looked like he hasn't changed a bit, and he still got it. Like many people on the board have stated...respect for that man has grown exponentially, especially for me personally.

I hadn't wanted to comment, but something struck me as I watched Dick Clark last night...
"Hmm...reminds me of Kirk Douglas at the Oscars."
In short, a guy who has gone through a life-changing event and, with the true dedication of a longtime performer, tries to make it look as if it's had all the effects of a haircut. It's difficult, and our first impulse is sympathy.
But as I listened - and yes, I also heard some of that distinctive timbre in his voice through the slurring - I heard another message -
"This is what I DO, dammit, and I'm not going to give it up just because my body failed me once. And if I've changed too much for you, it's YOUR problem. I'm happy to be here, so let's enjoy the night."
-
Even a hoarse Dick Clark is better than no Dick Clark. If the comic strips are to be believed, he's already looking forward to next New Year's Eve. (http://\"http://www.unitedmedia.com/creators/speedbump/\")

My take on the whole deal is that Dick wanted to do the show, so he worked his ass off in therapy and by-God did it, and he did a fine job, too. He explained his condition very quickly from the get-go and then got right down to the business at hand. He's obviously not going to let it get in his way.
He said himself that he had to teach himself to walk and talk again. I say that since he's come this far in just a year, he'll be ready to rip on New Years Rockin' Eve 07.
What a pro, what a trouper, what a determined man he is. God bless him. He was awesome. Some men half his age couldn't have made the comeback that he did last night.
As a side note, it was Dick Clark's 2004 Larry King appearance where he disclosed his diabetes that led me to get checked out, and I was diagnosed with type-2 shortly thereafter. He very well may have saved my life, and for that I am forever grateful to him.

I agree totally, and that is indeed what I meant.

A lot has already been said about how Dick sounded, and I fell in the group who had that initial shock after hearing his first words, and then tears of joy that he was back. Honestly, I was expecting Dick to be sitting in a chair with hardly any movement at all, but to see him standing was a big sigh of relief!
I was also glad to see that Dick has taken the Christopher Reeve High Road by not letting a debilitating setback interfere with his life -- but then, I think all of us knew that Dick wouldn't have it any other way.

Dick Clark just doesn't seem to me to be the sort who would give a damn about the above in the first place.

Dick Clark strikes me as someone who'd give a couple hundred damns about something he's passionate for.

I believe Robert's point is that the "quote" that Dr. Bear put in Dick's mouth (or mind, whatever) is unnecessarily hostile in that it implies that Dick has no interest whatsoever in what his audience thinks, and I doubt that's true.
-
That's a fair point, M.O. It's probably more accurate to say that after all this time, Dick thinks he has a relationship with his audience that is such that some physical imperfections shouldn't stand in the way. In reading your comment, I see that it may have come off as uncaring about the audience, and that's wrong - Clark is somebody who has always tried to provide something top quality, whether on Bandstand or Pyramid or whatever.

...well, I said "tried!"

I'm ashamed to see what a glass-half-empty person I really am. I saw part of the show and I thought it was sad to see him working in a condition like that. (I thought he sounded kind of like he had a cold.) Reading this thread, though, I should have been glad that he was willing to make the effort, and, voice excepted, he seemed physically up to the task.

God bless Dick Clark for going out there on New Year's Eve and doing it one more time. However, if things don't improve for him by next year, I would hope that he would be graceful and pass the baton to Seacrest, who's not Clark but is getting better.
Sometimes, we'd like our farewell to someone not be while they're at their depths.
