Title: Deal or No Deal to air in December!
Post by: NickS on November 18, 2005, 09:29:34 AM
According to Cynthia Turner's Cynopsis, DoND USA will be airing four nights consecutively at 8/7p from December 19-22.  Early X-Mas/Hannukah gift, I say.

Judging from what I've seen of the show, I can't wait.

Actually, not that bad a scheduling decision.  Most scripted shows will be in reruns, "Survivor" will be finished, "Amazing Race" may be finished (and I don't think they'll pre-empt "NCIS" for the finale, if it isn't) and "DOND" will lead into the finales of "Apprentice Martha" on Wednesday night (which granted is already dead) and "Apprentice Trump 4" on Thursday night.  It could just work.

Amazing Race finishes the 13th from what I hear...

It's an interesting move, trying the original Millionaire approach....and if it works, they may want to do some more shows as a pre- or post-Olympic stunt in February...but don't they only have 5 shows in the can right now? (so you would hope the 4 they pick, especially the first one, is really exciting....the buzz for the first one may tell the tale for the other three nights)

Meantime, what a nice Christmas Week gift. The PVR is being set now.

THOUGHT: Since Survivor's slot will be open, anyone here think CBS is crazy enough to throw that TPiR MDS against this on Thursday?

Now here's a question.  What's the deal with the 5th episode?  They taped 5 shows but only airing 4?  Each episode is an hour, so unless we are having a 2 hour premiere day, one will be left.  Could they just be "testing the waters" on each of those 4 days to see which is the best for Deal or No Deal?  Then airing that last episode then to make their final decision.

Intresting approach indeed but mind you NBC has not been THIS desperate for a blockbuster hit since 1984...Here's to hoping it works, though. Who knows maybe another flood of prime time games could flurish from this (a boy can dream, can he?)

That was my hope from NBC putting on DOND.  I just hope they don't overshow it like ABC did with WWTBAM. That would be such a shame, the show has great potential to be the only blockbuster NBC has...

This may be a shrewed move NBC is trying hear to put DoND in mid-late December.  I think the 4 consecutive nights idea is basically an "experiment" to see which night works best for the Peacock Network.  I doubt if one of the 4 is a 2-hour affair since the schedule calls for each show to be an hour long.  We'll see how all of this plays out next month.

Since 5 episodes were taped, if the show's a hit, where's #5 goona be slotted?

For the record, "Apprentice Trump 4" looks to end Dec. 15.  "Apprentice Martha"'s finale is Dec. 21 at 9 p.m. ET, a two-hour affair after an all-new "Deal or No Deal"--and if NBC wanted to load an [The Donald] yooge [TD] winner episode in, it could be on the 21st.

That answers my question as to what the 5th episode's slot is.  Now, I just hope NBC doesn't blantly "cancel" the show after a couple airings.  I certainly DON'T want a repeat of My Kind of Town.  Sheeesh!

Some of us, who actually appeared in an unaired episode, would also like to see the show return. Word from ABC is that is has NOT been officially cancelled...though i'd bet we'll never see it return.

Back on subject, don't go speaking for the rest of us, junior.

Great to hear they're airing the fifth episode, but in all honesty I can't see the show doing too well.  It'll depend on how much publicity it can get in the days beforehand.

The official web site for Deal or No Deal is now up.
NBC.com > Deal or No Deal (http://\"http://www.nbc.com/Deal_or_No_Deal/\")

The set, from what I can see, looks nice.  Also note that the board with the briefcase values is shown on the site.

The site also confirms that the show will indeed be airing December 19-23 (five nights).

That's actually a very generous money ladder. Not many versions that go up to a million have a 750,000 case (dropping rather dramatically from 1m to 500k), and I like that addition because there's still something really powerful on the board if the million disappears.

It strikes me as almost too much, though. Espeically because the entire left side of the board is less than $1000. The feel I get is that they are more interested in producing big winners than they are an interesting and compelling game, and this is a game that needs all the help it can get in that department.

I still have high hopes, and I hope to happily eat those words when I see it, but it will be interesting to see how the payouts on this test run shake down.

Mmm.

The interesting upside is that the drops are going to be that much bigger. The odds that you're going to have a case with more than $100,000 in it are "only" one in three (slightly less than, in fact) suggests that, well, your luck is going to run out sometime. The only value you're guaranteed not to wipe out is the one in your briefcase after all.

True, but if you look at how the payouts for the Netherlands and the UK are concerned, it falls within the range.  I mean, the Dutch goes to 5M Euro (about $6M) -- and 1 and 3M are with that as well.  Also, depending on how Howie can lead them along and the bank's offers, the payout might be smaller.

That's just my .02 from what I've seen.

NBC carried a DoND promo during their telecast of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which always draws more viewers than most primetime shows on Thanksgiving week.  In this promo, Howie asks-- "$1 million...or 1 penny...one question....Deal or No Deal?"

Looked good. VERY dramatic. Though I don't like 26 models holding the briefcases....I would rather it be done by other contestants, playing for bonus prizes for identifiying whats in their briefcases....

Given the way US DoND is conceived to be more "brain-dead" than its other versions, I suspect they're going for the "eye candy" rather than let the contestants hold the cases.

That's pretty obvious. Also it saves the prize budget some money since it removes the guessing-game-for-a-nominal-prize thing.

But they get models to open the cases in various South American versions as well.

Although they've recently changed it so that although they still open them, the losing contestants can now make guesses.

That's how it's always worked on the Aussie version...if a losing contestant's guess as to his/her case's contents is correct, it's worth a modest payoff, depending on what point in the round it's made at.

Sorry dude, you're misunderstanding - you're right this has always been the case in the Aussie show. But in the Mexican show, models open the briefcases (a la USA) but losing contestants still get a chance to guess the contents for a prize (this didn't used to be the case, models used to open the briefcase and the losers got no chance at anything).

tvwxman: Go back and read Craig's first post. I think he meant he doesn't want NBC to back out of DOND with episodes left on the table, as was the case with MKOT.

Hopefully, ABC will finish off that series at some point either on the mother net or on ABC Family. I was getting to like it.

As to DOND, I don't see the same problem coming up. They'll probably take a small hit on Monday in the West and Rockies, but after that it should be smooth sailing.
