To anybody who downloaded the videos, or John himself - can you identify the people-besides-Wink in them? I believe Art Alisi is the stand-in contestant nearest to Wink in the show open clip, but the others are a mystery.
Downloading the two new ones,

Not having realplayer here at work, but having seen this video, I believe it's Steve Friedman next to Art as a contestant. And Carnac is Marko Realmonte, one of the show's writers.

Who decided to put the contestants (and the chimp) in front of a green screen for the pilot? Maybe that's who the body is in dice pit for the final rehearsal. Lesson learned.
-
Thanks for the mystery identities Brian!
Now I see where those promo shots of the dice table facing the Big Numbers came from. Neato! I admit that green screen is awful cheesy. Any other differences between the pilot and series you can share? I'm only guessing the chimp was involved in one of those mini-games you could win.
On the Carnac clip, I can guess what was censored - but, can somebody (Brian, John, or maybe yet another person whose seen it clean! ;-) divulge as to what was said?

I took out the person reference and the \"joke\" reference because I thought it might be offensive to some people.
I'd rather not say what was said. :)

John...I know I went on and on thanking you yesterday, but I must do so again! I tried to email you (at info@jrjgames.com) to personally thank you, but I got the message back.
I LOVED seeing those pilot clips. What I wouldn't give to see that in its entirety!
Interesting the things that didn't carry over to the series. I actually think the pilot had a much better \"look\". It's slightly darker, but that added a little drama. I liked how the background cycled from blue to pink and the sparkly star effect with the white lights.
The moving dice table was just AWESOME! Why didn't they keep this? That was really really cool. Sort of added the drama of the contestant \"confronting\" the board (very PYL-ish). The cheesy blue screen effect behind the players definately needed to go and what's up with the chimp??? I'm glad that game never made it to the series! Bizarre.

I completely agree...I like the concept of the contestant both literally and figuratively \"facing\" the Big Numbers.
I can't remember how they handled breaks during the show...did they ever go straight from Big Numbers into introducing a challenger and starting a new match? (Or, for that matter, straight from a match into Big Numbers?) If they did, that could be one reason the table transition never made it to series, because it only really works to use it if there is going to always be a break between the front and end games, as a transitional as they go to break, like they did on PYL.
I also like the bit of speedup they had in the Big Numbers flashing at the start of the show (after the sequential \"clap\" sequence). Total aesthetic effect, yes, but for some reason it made me feel like I was about to be presented with a more fast-paced game.

They did go from the bonus to introducing a new challenger and starting a new match on occasion, as well as going from the end of a match to the bonus round without taking a break(though not often). THey've run out of time at the end of a show before getting to the Big Numbers(on the 1987 premiere for one episode), and even run out of time as well as taking commercial breaks before playing one of the mini-games on the 1987-88 run.

I think you're absolutely right. Since some matches could go very quickly, they did frequently go right from a match to the BN and vise versa. It would be kinda jarring to see the table moving all the time, but damn, it's still cool! :-)

Most segments seemed to time out to about 6 minutes on High Rollers, and Big Numbers (like most standard end games) tended to clock at about 3 minutes, so they did play the Big Numbers in the same segment as the main game on several occasions (both before and after). The dice table move would require repositioning cameras or having additional cameras, which would almost certainly require either additional time (in the form of stopdowns) or additional labor (in the form of cameramen and grips). The effect certainly was cool for a pilot where they could guarantee that the Big Numbers would happen at the start of a segment and they could do the repositioning during the prior break, but it wouldn't be cost-effective for a series where the Big Numbers could come at any time.

Here's another HR question: Was there ever a maingame where 1 was the only remaining number on the board. If so, how was it handled if anyone remembers from all those years ago? I know that a contestant won $800(and the game ended) if 1 was the only remaning number on the board in the Big Numbers round.
-
The winner of the resulting question would end up the victor. (they'd answer correctly, pass, roll would be impossible)

This makes sense, but did it ever actually happen? I KNOW it happened in the BN a few times, but I don't ever recall seeing it happen in the front game (at least on Martindale's version).

I don't recall it happening in the maingame on WInk's version(perhaps it did a few times in the Trebek years, those with 25-30 year old memory might recall better than us)

I know it happened at least once during the second Trebek run, because I saw it when it first aired and remember Alex explaining how it would be handled. I doubt that was the only time it happened, but I don't remember ever seeing it on Wink's version and I was too young to remember much of the first Trebek run.

The pilot was great, when exactly did it tape? Also, the chimp was an interesting idea, could've made a cool side game.

No, it wouldn't have. Imagine that monkey wanting to be naughty one day. I can imagine him slinging something else down the table except for golden dice.

It'd turn into a regular crap game. (ducking)

I don't think that was the bodily secretion he had in mind...

Actually... it was. Monkeys are very, very naughty.
Wait a sec.... what body secretion did you think I was thinking of?

Nono, I think you and I are on the same wavelength, it's Donegan who is working from the wrong orifice, as it were. :)

I finally downloaded some of the clips. The Weird open was hilarious(And here's the man with the hairspray, Wink Martindale)! I also liked the moving dice table during the pilot. As for the top ten blooper, wouldn't it have been even more bizarre to see Alex Trebek on the set?
